New Eco Audit Summary chartenables multiple eco audits to be compared directly in
the software and provides guidance on strategies for reducing environmental impact. See
item (4).
These and other enhancements are detailed below. Descriptions are organized in sections
according to software, or database modules.
Ranks all materials in the same dataset, based on their nearness to the property profile
of the selected material (1 = close or exact match, 0 = no similarity).
Benefits:
2. Updated search capabilitynew enhanced search engine provides faster, more accurate
and greater flexibility in searching. Includes the following capabilities:
Ranks results by closeness to search termrecords with search term in datasheet name
or folder path are ranked higher than others.
Enables search using operators (OR, NOT); AND is the default operator for multiple
terms.
Enables search with wildcards (*, ?)these only apply when added at the end of the
search term.
Searches using stemmingfor example, searching on conditioned will return hits for
condition and conditions.
Benefits:
Locate in Browse Tree added to all relevant right-click menus (search results, selection
results, chart labels, datasheets)this highlights the record location in browse tree.
New capability to focus your selection on just your preferred materials, by creating a
custom subset based on your list of favorite materials.
Revised behavior of Limit stage windowonly one limit stage is now displayed in the
right-hand pane. This allows faster operation when using multiple Limit stages.
The default naming of Limit and Tree stages now includes the applied constraintsthis is
particularly useful when multiple stages have been defined.
Limit and Tree stage tooltip now lists all applied constraints (properties and values)this
is displayed when the pointer is over the stage name in the stage list and enables applied
constraints to be viewed without having to open stages.
Functional data values (e.g. Youngs modulus at temperature) are now displayed in the
Comparison Tableparameter values (e.g. temperature) are listed at the bottom of the
table.
Graph aspect ratio is maintained in Selection Reportthis ensures that the appearance
of graph stages and labeling is replicated in the Selection Report.
When editing user-defined records, all headings containing a populated value are now
shown by defaultthis simplifies identification of set properties.
Settings for the selection project results list are now saved and recalled from project files.
A new global project setting has been added for Pass not applicable and Fail estimates
values. This is set from the Selection tab in the Options dialog.
Benefits:
Simplify the use of the software and enhance your user experience.
Add-on Tools
Eco Audit Tool
4. New Eco Audit Summary Chart windowlaunched automatically when a second Eco Audit
is started or by using the new Summary chart button in the report section of the Eco Audit
definition screen. This provides a dynamic display of the life phase summary chart that
updates as inputs to the calculation are changed. It includes the following features:
Options to Print chart or Copy chart ready for pasting into other applications.
Multiple products, or audits, can be compared using the new Compare with button. This
enables the results of the existing product to be compared with a copy of itself, a new blank
product, or a saved product. A new eco audit project is created and a series is added to the
summary chart. There is no limit on the number of products / audits that can be compared.
The difference in total environmental impact is shown by the % Change bar next to the chart
legend. This displays the change, relative to the first product, in first life Energy or
CO2 Footprint. Note, this does not include the contribution from the End of Life (EoL)
potential phase.
The product definition screen for each product can be accessed by clicking on either the tab
for the product or the product name in the summary chart legend.
Benefits:
Explore what if scenarios, getting interactive feedback on design changes as you go.
Demonstrate, clearly and easily, the influence of different product designs and life
scenarios on environmental impact.
Get guidance on potential strategies for reducing the environmental impact of a product.
5. New Electrical components added to the Electrical components (Eco Audit only) folder in
the MaterialUniverse (19 records)increasing the number of components from 22 to 41.
New types of battery (rechargeable Li-ion and NiMH for laptops) (2 records)
Benefits:
Simplify the specification of electrical and electronic products in the Eco Audit Tool.
Hybrid Synthesizer
6. New Hybrid Synthesizer modelsthe following models have been added to the Hybrid
Synthesizer:
New Multi-layer materials modelestimate the performance of symmetrical and nonsymmetrical multilayer materials with between two and seven layers. This is particularly
suited for modeling packaging laminates.
Closed-cell foam and Honeycomb (expanded and extruded) options have been added
to the Cellular Structures model.
Short fiber (aligned and random) options have been added to the Composites (Simple
Bounds) model.
New Dual material lattice modelinvestigate how to combine two materials in a lattice
structure to achieve a material/structure with a specified coefficient of thermal expansion.
Benefits:
7. New fibers and particulates have been added to the MaterialUniverse dataset (8 records):
Benefits:
Data Modules
8. MaterialUniverse data
Updated Material pricesnew prices are available for all 3,750+ materials in the
MaterialUniverse. These have been generated using an enhanced version of Grantas
price model.
Benefits:
Use up-to-date prices, reflecting current differences between material types and classes.
Equivalent specifications and designation fields have been added to the datasheet for
ferrous, aluminum, magnesium, nickel, and cobalt alloys. These list similar grades, based
on composition, from other designations systems. Information is included from twelve
standards systems (ACI, AISI, ASM, ASTM, BS, BS EN, EN, GB, ISO, JIS, SAE and
UNS) classified into six categories: UNS, US, EN (name and number), ISO, GB
(Chinese), JIS (Japanese).
The main alloying additions and/or key characteristics have been included in the folder
names at the designation level of the tree. For example AISI 201 (Low nickel work
hardenable)provides greater information on the type of alloy and the differences
between grades.
The first level of the ferrous branch of the MaterialUniverse has been simplified to
eight folders: alloy steels, carbon steels, cast iron, coated steel, iron, microalloy and high
strength steels, stainless steel, and tool steels.
A new Condition field has been added to the datasheetthis describes the heat
treatment process applied to metal alloys. The associated design note summarizes the
main heat treatments applied to steel, aluminum, titanium, nickel and copper-based
alloys.
Benefits:
10. New lightweighting materials have been added to MaterialUniverse (90 records)covering
aluminum alloys, magnesium alloys, high strength steels and fiber reinforced polymers.

Benefits:
Improve lightweight design with enhanced coverage of materials commonly used in this
application.
11. Two new Nitinol shape memory alloys (wire and bulk form)datasheets for both the
martensitic and austenitic (high temperature) phases have been added.
Benefits:
Support design of medical devices and implants by considering this important medical
