ANDREW KNOWLES TO OPEN SOLO SHOW BAHASQUIAT

received a scholarship to attend art classes for a semester at
The Place for Art under the tutelage of K. Smith. Through
art Knowles has had the opportunity to take part in group
exhibitions and it has changed his life. Art helped me to ignore my emotions, he stated. I forget the pain when I am
caught up in my art and get into the zone. Knowles likes to
work large and with oils, his medium of choice, which allows
him to paint faster. It makes me feel as if I am colouring.

Bahasquiat-Radiant Child the first solo show of artist

Andrew Knowles, will open on Tuesday, September 22
from 6-9 pm. Born in Nassau on September 12, 1996, the
teenaged Knowles is a 12th grade student of St Annes
School who considers art as a saving grace in his life. By
attributing the name (with a Bahamian spelling twist) and
artistic elements of the exhibition to American artist, Jean
Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) Knowles is paying homage to
how the late artist has influenced his work.
Like Basquiat, Knowles has a challenging life, having
grown up with a mother addicted to drugs, not knowing his
father, having his eldest brother die a year ago, the other
brother in jail, and not really knowing his two sisters. At the
age of 13, Knowles went to live at the Elizabeth Estates
Home which he had to leave at the age of 17. He is presently living with friends.
Knowles first memory of drawing was as a young child
often visiting the St Martins Convent on Nassau Street
where he was able to get something to eat. It was there
where he was allowed to doodle and draw.
Knowles developed a serious interest in drawing whilst in
Grade 8 at St Annes School (where he is still a scholarship
student). Whilst at the Elizabeth Estates home, Knowles

Knowles is devouring as much knowledge as he can about

art - studying, experimenting and forming alliances with other
young artists in different genres. He is a writer of poems, a
skill that he has nurtured all of his life. He started a group
called A-word Artistry in which he combines art and the written word (like Basquiat), as well as a body painting group
called the Paintography Experiment consisting of two other
artists, four photographers and a group of body models. This
year he produced a large painting of the Icon Award which
was on display at the ceremony. He also produces oil portraits on site, claiming he is the fastest oil portrait artist in the
country.
Knowles expresses his admiration for Bahamian artist, Allan
Wallace, because of Wallaces amazing ability to transfer the
images of his imagination and thoughts onto a surface, a trait
that Knowles wishes he possessed. However, he continues
to dream with his eyes open and hopes that the viewing
public will appreciate the enthusiasm that he has expressed
in this collection of almost 20 new works, as a testament to
the power of creativity.
The Exhibition will be on display until Wednesday, October
14.
