Engineering The art of managing engines. It is the science by which properties of matter and the sources of energy in nature are made useful to man in structures, machines, and products. It is the application of science to practical problems. It is interlocked with science, mathematics, business, and environment. A. Science - Engineers apply the Scientific Method, which refers to the use of theory and experiment in the search for understanding, in their work. - Engineers who have been formally educated are exposed to the same beginning science courses as science majors. - Pure scientists are different from practicing engineers. B. Mathematics - It is the theoretical language of technology. - Middle ground between mathematicians and engineers. - Mathematics is important in engineering not only because engineers must think in terms of quantity but also because it allows the modeling of physical relationships that in turn allow analysis, optimization and prediction. C. Business - Business considerations are integral since technology requires resource support and number of people.
- Marketing, management, and
finance cannot be separated from engineering. D. Environment - Environment in which engineering must operate is the human environment. - It is the desires of people that lead to products and services. - The Engineering Process: 1. Problem 2. Preliminary Design 3. Development 4. Production 5. Dissemination of output to users 6. Disposal of products and byproducts of engineering 7. R&D II. Design and Invention by James L. Adams Design and Invention the creative aspects of technology. People and history books have always had a desire to give an individual credit for technological inventions. Yet detailed examinations show that a single person rarely deserve total credit for an invention. Inventions:
