Atlantic

Fallout from financial collapse
could spell trouble for Shore area
ANDREW FORD @ANDREWFORDNEWS

TRENTON - Fallout from Atlantic Citys financial

meltdown could mean trouble beyond the gambling
resorts borders.
Gov. Chris Christies hardball negotiating position
already threatens plans to fortify Monmouth Countys
horse-racing industry with new revenue.
Christie said he will oppose any new gambling in
northern New Jersey, the anticipated source of new
cash for the likes of Monmouth Park, if Atlantic City
goes bust. The governor wants the Legislature to pass
a financial bailout bill that cedes key Atlantic City decision-making to Trenton.
I disagree with him on tying these two together,
said state Sen. Jennifer Beck, Republican from Monmouth County. I understand that theres negotiation
going on around the Atlantic City takeover issue, but
this is separate.
And all the talk about Atlantic City going broke has
already gained Wall Streets notice. Should New Jersey leaders let Atlantic City default on its debts, it
would bode ill for other financially distressed municipalities in the state. Financial experts contend they
could face higher borrowing costs.
Bond markets dont like uncertainty and were
nothing but uncertainty right now, said Marc Pfeiffer, a senior policy fellow and assistant director of
Rutgers Universitys Bloustein Local Government
Research Center.
Even closer to home, nearly 2,100 Ocean County

The second annual Asbury Park

Music in Film Festival, which took
place Friday through Sunday in the
city, certainly fulfilled its quota of
wow moments.
Never-before-seen footage of a baby-faced Bob Dylan from the early
1960s drew coos from the crowd at the
Dylan Archives screening, hosted
by Dylan manager Jeff Rosen, at the
House of Independents on Sunday.
Ahmet Zappa, son of Frank Zappa,
turned heads when he asked the Growing Up Dead
panel if they were aware of any shared history between his father and the Dead on Saturday at the Paramount Theatre.

Zappa would later head downtown for the documentary about his father, Eat That Question: Frank Zappa
in His Own Words, at the House of Independents.
Also, the appearance of Bruce Springsteen on
screen in a seven-minute sneak peek of the Jersey
Shore surfing documentary, New Jerseys Endless
Stoke, Friday at the House of Independents was a surprise.
There was a collective ooh and ahh in the house,
said Adam Nelson of the House of Independents. To
see Bruce talk about surfing in Asbury Park and to see
the surfing history that charts through him, thats an
exceptional thing.
The festival, presented by the Asbury Park Press
and APP.com; Monmouth Medical Center, a Barnabas
Health facility; and the Asbury Park Music Foundation, presented full-length and short films about music

Wechsler picked up the handwritten
letter and read it slowly.
I think you are a hero and a role
model, a middle-school student
wrote, because you are brave enough
to speak to so many people about what
you went through.
Wechsler owns a stack of notes like this. Shes 78
years old, and they fuel her travels across New Jersey. Holocaust survivors are in high demand, especially approaching Yom HaShoah, the annual day of
remembrance. But there is another reason.
Theyre dying out, Wechsler said, before pausing to reconsider. Not they we.
Her story is powerful, and not just because of its
sheer human drama. Religious and ethnic groups
around the world continue to be persecuted, and
here at home, political fear-mongers want to close
our borders to them. Then there is scary rhetoric
like presidential candidate Ted Cruzs recent call on
U.S. law enforcement to patrol and secure Muslim
