Our fifth issue is out now and how time seems to be flying
by... I am starting to see and hear more and more bikes on the road as Spring
and Summer approach. What a great sight and sound it is, indeed, and those
that ride year-round can finally start shedding those layers that kept in their
body heat during the colder riding days. There are so many rides and events
coming up that it is impossible to attend them all. I will try to split the TRM-NY
staff up to provide the best coverage of as many events as we can. Also, event
coverage and post event articles will always be prioritized to our current and
past advertisers. We will continue to show support for those that support TRM,
as our magazine is made possible (and kept FREE) solely from the support
of our advertisers. I encourage all of our readers to visit the Biker Friendly
businesses listed within our mag, and stop by our advertisers, as they not
only support TRM, but they are there for the biker community as a whole. If

Upping cubic inches is achieved by increasing bore size or
lengthening the stroke. On Twin Cam motors increasing dis-
placement is very easy, by simply boring the cylinders from
3.750” to 3.875”, going from 88” to 95”. On the 2007 96”ers
with the longer stroke the process is the same going from the
96” to 103”. Just a note, save some money by having your
cylinders bored rather than buying S.E.Cylinders as they are
the same part except the S.E.Cylinders were bored at the
factory. This is also true for pumping up your 883 to a 1200.
Now, for you Evo, Shovel and Panhead owners, increased
displacement takes a little more work. To bore one of these
older models the engine has to be completely disassembled
because the spigot holes in the cases need to be bored to
accommodate the larger cylinders. Another option for the
increasing cubic inches is to stroke them. To stroke an earlier
motor complete engine disassembly is also required, install-
ing stroker flywheels (flywheels with a crank pin position
lowered) this increases the stroke of the pistons therefore
increasing the cubic inches. According to what you are look-
ing to achieve, you may choose to just bore or just stroke. A
stroked engine will have a lot more torque, where a bore only
motor will have the ability to rev quicker with higher horse-
power. Most people will do both bore and stroke to achieve a
bigger overall motor with more horsepower and torque.
Anther option some riders are opting for is to buy an after
market larger “Crate motor” and just shelving their stock mo-
tor. This option is a lot easier in many cases but it can also
be more expensive and I believe you can achieve an engine
to better suit your needs by building your current motor. This
is unless you want to go bigger than your cases will allow. A
twin cam can be built to 124” and an Evo or Shovels as big
as 119” (although I wouldn’t recommend it for street use!).
The bigger Twin Cams are a lot more suitable for longevity
of general street and touring where as the bigger Evo’s and
Shovels are more for blasting around town. That is not to say
that a well built big inch Evo would not be good for touring if it
is built for that use. A good long lasting motor will usually not
have a stroke longer than 4.625, any longer is pretty hard on
the lower end and often results in more frequent teardowns.
A good size for an Evo built for touring is 106”. We have built
a lot of these and they have racked up thousands of trouble
free miles.

Proner & Proner File Suit Against N.Y.S. Police for Illegally Stopping Bikers
NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - June 8, 2009) - Proner & Proner, Attorneys at
law, have filed a Federal class action lawsuit in the Federal Court for the Northern
District of New York against the New York State Police as well as New York State
and county authorities to stop them from conducting motorcycle-only roadblocks
near popular motorcycle events. Last year the New York State Police and county
sheriffs stopped every motorcycle en route to twelve different events for “safety
checks.” With the riding season starting, the New York State Police expect to
conduct up to fifteen motorcycle-only roadblocks throughout the state this year.
The events targeted include Americade in Lake George, the largest motorcycle
event in the Northeast.
Mitchell Proner, an active motorcyclist and personal injury attorney, is initiating
the lawsuit on behalf of all motorcyclists. Mr. Proner said that the New York State
Police “uses the pretense of safety inspections to delay and harass motorcyclists

without any reasonable belief that any laws are being broken.” Although courts
have upheld DWI checkpoints as generally permissible, “These motorcycle
roadblock stops are lengthy and do not address any legitimate safety concerns,”
according to Mr. Proner.
Mr. Proner alleges that these motorcycle-only roadblocks violate the motorcyclists’
Fourth Amendment right to be free from unreasonable search and seizure. In
addition, by specifically targeting motorcycle events, New York State is infringing
on the motorcyclists’ First Amendment rights of freedom of assembly and freedom
of association.

 The PaTrioT Guard

The history of the Patriot Guard originated on July 24, 2005 when
American Legion Rider Terry Houck’s wife, Carol, learned that a group
of protestors disrupted a Newkirk, Oklahoma soldiers funeral. Together,
they created a plan for rider to the funerals and showing sincere respect
to our fallen heroes, their families and from their communities. Terry
discussed the plan with other members of Kansas American Legion Rid-
ers from Legion Post 136, Mulvane, Kansas. The group agreed to take
action to preserve our Fallen Hero’s memory and honor, and provide
support to their families who were being harassed by the Fred Phelps
Westboro Baptist Church protesters.
At the August 7, 2005 meeting, ALR 136 director Chuck “Pappy” Barsh-
ney appointed committee members Terry “Darkhorse” Houck, Cregg
“Bronco” Hansen, Steven “McDaddy” McDonalds, and Bill “Wild Bill”
Logan. The committee established a mission purpose, procedures, and
guidelines to honor the memory of our Fallen Soldiers and support the
families who are subjected to the WBC protests. Later additions to the
committee include co-directors Dennis “Tatonka” Scuffman, Greg “Ebay”
Hansen, Richard “Stretch” Strothman and Doug “GreyEagle” Lehman.
When the ALR 136 committee heard that the WBC were going to protest
at the Funeral of Sgt John Doles in Chelsea, OK, a Mission Statement
was established. The Mission Statement included getting the families
permission and contacting Law Enforcement and other Motorcycle
Groups in Kansas and Oklahoma, as well as other states. The commit-
tee agreed that the ultimate goal was to get veterans and motorcycle
organizations involved in every state so that each state could handle
the situation internally and not rely on other states to do the job. Cregg
Hansen used his American Legion Rider Chapter contacts to spread the
word about the mission. Our established procedures have been adopted
by all Patriot Guard for us on the National Level. The October 11, 2005
Chelsea Oklahoma mission was planned and executed with military
precision. After the successful Chelsea Mission, the Kansas American
Legion Riders wanted all motorcycle groups, organizations, and indi-
vidual supporters to be recognized. Therefore, on October 18, 2005 the
name of the “PATRIOT GUARD” was established. The “Patriot Guard”

name was proudly announced to more than one hundred riders present
at the October 27, 2005 Tonganoxie Mission to Honor SPC Lucas Frantz.
We designed our Patriot Guard patches and began distributing them in
late November 2005. Since then, the Kansas Patriot Guard has planned
and executed missions in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska and partici-
pated in missions planned by other states. The Patriot Guard missions
are successful because each and every member contributes their time to
stand guard.

The Patriot Guard mission is to stand guard at funerals of America’s
Fallen Heroes who are killed in action or are casualties of the current
wars on terrorism in Afghanistan, Iraq, or any war zone. We also offer
this support to law enforcement and firefighters who are killed in the line
of duty. We shield them from protesters, showing our deepest respect
and honoring the Fallen Heroes, their families and their communities.
We are invited guests of the family. You do not need to ride a motorcycle
or be a Military Veteran to support the Patriot Guard Mission.

The Patriot Guard mission is supported by many motorcycle organi-
zations and non-rider individuals who share one common goal. We

Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army,
Navy and Air Force Days. The single-day
celebration stemmed from the unification of
the Armed Forces under one department
-- the Department of Defense. Each of the
military leagues and orders was asked to drop
sponsorship of its specific service day in order to
celebrate the newly announced Armed Forces Day. The
Army, Navy and Air Force leagues adopted the newly formed day. The Marine
Corps League declined to drop support for Marine Corps Day but supports Armed
Forces Day, too.
In a speech announcing the formation of the day, President Truman “praised the
work of the military services at home and across the seas” and said, “it is vital to
the security of the nation and to the establishment of a desirable peace.” In an
excerpt from the Presidential Proclamation of Feb. 27, 1950, Mr. Truman stated:

MOTORCYCLE THEFTS FALL
Motorcycle thefts in the US fell by 13% to 56,093 last year from 64,492 in
2008, the biggest drop since 2007 according to the National Insurance
Crime Bureau in an April 13th statement. Honda was the most stolen brand
accounting for 24% of the thefts, followed by Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki and
Harley-Davidson, said the NICB citing National Crime Information Center data.
The recession prompted lower bike sales and a decrease in production, pushing
motorcycle thefts down for a third consecutive year. Sales of new bikes fell
43% in 2009 from the year-earlier period, according to the Motorcycle Industry
Council. Likewise, the Japanese Automobile Manufacturers Association
reported a 47.4% decrease in motorcycle production last year.
Recovery rates have declined along with thefts, with only 30% of the stolen
bikes recovered in 2009, compared with 41% in 2006, NICB data show.
The top five states for motorcycle theft were warm-weather ones: California,
Texas, Florida, North Carolina and Georgia, together accounting for 39% of
the total.
It should be no surprise that the summer months of July (6,319); August
(6,079); and June (5,672) saw the most theft activity while the fewest thefts
were recorded during the winter months of December (2,927); February
(3,100); and January (3,570).
The best way to prevent theft is to keep your motorcycle out of sight or covered
up and secured to an immovable object with a good through-the-frame lock in
addition to the steering lock.
MAINE REQUIRES MOTORCYCLES TO DISPLAY INSPECTION STICKERS
Maine Governor John Baldacci on April 9, 2010 signed LD 1675 into law,
requiring the state’s 50,000 registered motorcycles to carry inspection stickers
that are “completely and clearly visible from the rear” starting in 2012.
A bill that started in the state legislature as a broadly worded bill to quiet noisy
motorcycles evolved into a measure requiring riders to display inspection
stickers when Maine’s Transportation Committee concluded that 38% of
Maine motorcycles aren’t inspected, noting faulty and noisy motorcycle
mufflers would fail annual inspections.
The bill also sets up a task force to explore other methods of reducing
motorcycle noise, including sound testing, and report to the Transportation
Committee by January 15, 2011.
LD1675 passed the Maine House by a vote of 104-33 on March 22. The
Senate passed it April 5, with no tally released.

MOTORCYCLE SAFETY BILL PASSES IN OKLAHOMA
“Gunner’s Bill” has been signed into law by Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry,
providing for the state’s first comprehensive motorcycle safety program.
HB 2264, authored by state Rep. Mike Christian and state Sen. Steve Russell,
allows the state to add a $3 fee, designated for motorcycle safety and
education, to the existing cost of registering a motorcycle. It also establishes a
revolving fund into which the money is to be deposited.
Rep. Christian said the legislative action was necessary because motorcycle
registrations continue to increase in Oklahoma; therefore, without training and
prevention efforts, vehicle crashes involving motorcycles are likely to increase.
According to the Oklahoma Tax Commission, there were 115,381 registered
motorcyclists in the state in 2008, a 14.3% increase over 2007. Motorcycle
fatalities increased 17.6% during the same period, and injuries increased
21.4%.
HB 2264 is known as “Gunner’s Bill” in honor of Robert “Gunner” Catcher, a
motorcyclist who died after being struck by a pickup in 2009. The driver of the
truck said he did not see Gunner.
“I heartily salute each and every one of ABATE of Oklahoma’s and the OK
Confederation of Clubs volunteer officers and members, and look forward to
our continued success working together in the spirit of unity to make Oklahoma
the best state in which to ride,” said Tiger Mike Revere of ABATE of OK and
a member of the Board of Directors of the National Coalition of Motorcyclists
(NCOM).
Also signed into law was SB 1670 - a bill that changes the makeup of the
Oklahoma Motorcycle Safety Advisory Committee. “So, not only will we
generate about $400,000 each year but we will also have a substantial say
in how it is spent,” commented John Pierce, ABATE Legislative Coordinator.
WYOMING BIKERS WORK WITH CITY TO PROMOTE MOTORCYCLE
AWARENESS
The Casper City Council voted unanimously to pay for motorcycle-safety
billboards in the coming months, with Wyoming Central ABATE picking up the
campaign halfway through the riding season. The council approved $5,400 in
grant money to pay for four billboards from April through July, when Wyoming
Central ABATE would begin paying for the billboards with its own message to
run through October.
The push for motorcycle awareness stems from two high-profile accidents
involving motorcyclists last summer, including an ABATE member who was
killed by a left-turning Hummer. The accidents prompted Wyoming Central
ABATE to meet with city officials and hash out a plan to increase awareness
of motorcycles among drivers.
The Casper Police Department applied for grant money from the Wyoming
Department of Transportation to be used on a “campaign targeting the
reduction of the number and severity of motorcycle crashes in the Casper
area,” according to a city memo.
MICHIGAN HELMET LAW REPEAL REPEAT?
Once again, Michigan legislators are moving to repeal the state’s 40 year old
mandatory helmet law, but their governor threatens veto action.
In late March, the House voted 63 to 46 to approve an amendment to the

current Michigan Helmet Law which would allow motorcycle riders 21 years
old and older to operate their motorcycle without a helmet as long as they
carry $20,000 or more in insurance.
The bill now goes to the Senate for consideration. If the Democratic-led
House and Republican-led Senate both approve as they have in the past,
the bill would again go to the governor for her signature or veto. Proposals to
eliminate or ease the law were passed by the House and Senate in 2005/2006
and 2007/2008, but Gov. Jennifer Granholm vetoed both measures.
ABATE of Michigan and the Michigan Confederation of Clubs continues to
hold sway in the Legislature using arguments that include personal freedom
and economic impact. The Democratic governor leaves office next year and
is not seeking reelection.
MOTORCYCLE ADVISORY COUNCIL SURVEYS ROAD CONDITIONS
The Motorcyclist Advisory Council (MAC) to the Federal Highway Administration
has made recommendations to U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood
and his predecessors on various topics, including 1) Barrier design; (2) Road
design, construction, and maintenance practices; and (3) The architecture and
implementation of Intelligent Transportation System technologies.
Of special significance was the creation and approval of the yearly Motorcyclist
Road Conditions Survey, which can be accessed at http://tinyurl.com/ykbqsr6.
The purpose of the survey is to better communicate to the MAC, road
construction engineers, and transportation safety officials the specific needs
of motorcyclists that should be considered when developing new roadways or
altering existing routes.
The MAC-FHWA coordinates and advises the Secretary of the Department of
Transportation on infrastructure issues of concern to motorcycle riders, and is
comprised of ten members of the motorcycling community with professional
expertise in national motorcyclist safety advocacy. James “Doc” Reichenbach
II, State President of ABATE of Florida and Chairman of the Board of the
National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) serves on the MAC as one of two
members representing state motorcyclists’ organizations.
ANTILOCK BRAKES MAKE MOTORCYCLES SAFER
With motorcycle ownership skyrocketing from 4.3 million to 10.4 million over
the past decade, and a corresponding increase in rider deaths and injuries,
two new studies have found that equipping motorcycles with antilock brakes
makes them much safer.
The studies, one by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the other
by the Highway Loss Data Institute, found that bikes with antilock brakes are
involved in 37% fewer fatal accidents per 10,000 registered vehicles and
reported 22% fewer accident damage claims per insured vehicle year.
Stopping a motorcycle is trickier than stopping a car. For one thing, the front
and rear wheels typically have separate brake controls. In an emergency,
a rider faces a split-second choice to either brake hard, which can lock the
wheels and cause an overturn, or hold back on braking and risk running into
the emergency. This is when antilock brakes can help by reducing brake
pressure when they detect impending lockup and then increasing the pressure
again when traction is restored. Brake pressure is evaluated multiple times per
second, so riders may brake fully without fear of locking up.

Until lately, such crash avoidance technology as antilock brakes has primarily
been available only on larger, more expensive motorcycles, but they are now
available on 60 new models.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is considering whether or
not antilock brakes should be mandatory on motorcycles.
OUTLAW BIKER 101

Gangs throughout the United States. The investigative techniques they used
will be presented. Also, the many pitfalls and mistakes they made will be
graphically demonstrated. Due to the sensitive nature of the training program
and threats of physical harm to some of the speakers, the exact location of the
training program will only be revealed to those who register. Special security
will be maintained and only certified law enforcement officers with proper
identification will be admitted.”
As one of America’s foremost authorities on biker discrimination, Minnesota
Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) attorney Steven O’Brien, who also serves
as legal counsel to the Confederation of Clubs of Minnesota and ABATE of
Minnesota, applied for the course last year but was denied admittance with
the written admonishment that he would be better suited to attend the NCOM
Convention. O’Brien was instrumental in getting the nation’s first and only biker
anti-discrimination law on the books in Minnesota, and then was successful in
getting the new law upheld by the courts when an ABATE member was denied
service at a bar.

Harley-Davidson reports profit; sales continue to drop
Harley-Davidson reported earnings of about $68.7 million, or about 29 cents per
share, for the first quarter of 2010. However, earnings were cut in half, to about
14 cents per share, when taking into account Harley’s discontinued operations,
including MV Agusta.
Also, Harley motorcycle sales continued to slip in the first quarter of this year, the
company said, falling more than 24 percent in the United States compared to the
first quarter last year.
International sales fell nearly 3 percent, which showed improvement from double-
digit declines in the past few quarters.

Harley’s domestic sales drop was worse than the overall heavyweight motorcyle
market, which fell more than 21 percent during the same time period.
Still, the company turned a profit from its internal loan operations, Harley-Davidson
Financial Services, after three quarters of losing money from the operations. And,
the company said it is on schedule and on budget for its restructuring activities,
including a plan for its York County operations that in the end is expected to result
in more than 1,000 job cuts.
Harley CEO Receives $6.4 Million Pay
Package
Harley-Davidson CEO Keith Wandell received
a $6.4 million dollar pay package in less than
a full year on the job.
The newest leader of American motorcycle manufacturer
Harley-Davidson, Keith Wandell, received a pay package
valued at $6.4 million in 2009, according to a regulatory
filing. The majority of it comes in the form of stock and option awards, which tally
up to $4.9 million. His base salary, starting from May 1 and ending Dec. 31, was
$650,025, to go along with a bonus of $780,030. Other compensations for the
Harley CEO totaled $22,515. Not a bad chunk of change for only eight months of
work.
Wandell took over for James L. Ziemer, who headed The Motor Company for four
years but was with H-D for 40 years. Ziemer lived and breathed Harley-Davidson.
Wandell’s appointment wasn’t without controversy. Wandell was formerly the chief
operating officer at Johnson Controls Inc., where he worked for 21 years. Johnson
Controls Inc. has built its reputation by making ventilation systems for buildings
and car batteries. Heck, Wandell even admitted on a Q&A with Trading Markets.
com that he rode motorcycles when he was young, but wasn’t even necessarily a
motorcyclist at the time of his hiring.
National Mandatory
Motorcycle Helmet Law
The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) has learned that, in a hearing held this
week by the U.S. Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, Senator
Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) repeatedly called for a national mandatory helmet law.
The hearing, entitled “Opportunities to Improve Highway Safety,” focused on areas
that need improvement when it comes to the landscape of highway injuries and
fatalities.
In his opening statement, Lautenberg said that there should be a mandatory
motorcycle helmet law for all riders in America. This is typical for the 86-year-old
senator. He has routinely attempted to put a federal mandatory helmet law in place
before. Lautenberg currently chairs or sits on every single senate committee that
has jurisdiction over roads and road safety.
During this hearing, Lautenberg was not alone in his quest for an all-rider federal
helmet law. As expected, the spokesperson for the Advocates for Highway Safety
also voiced their opinion that a national helmet law is a good idea.
Fortunately, the hearing didn’t only focus on the helmet debate; in fact, very little of
it did. There were other issues covered such as impaired driving, distracted driving,
and big trucks.

Mary.’ She said, ‘Aye, he told me, and I was a bit surprised myself. You
know, he’s only been there twice in the last four years. Once he fell
asleep, and the other time I had to pull him by the ears to make him
come.’
A truck driver had to deliver 100 penguins to the state zoo. As he was
driving his truck through the desert, the truck broke down.
After waiting by the side of the road for about three hours, he waved
another truck down and offered a good ole’ boy named Bubba $500 to
take the penguins to the State Zoo for him.
The next day, the first truck driver arrived in town and saw Bubba
crossing the road with the 100 penguins walking in pairs of two,
directly behind him.
The first truck driver jumped out of his truck and said, “What’s going
on? I gave you $500 to take these penguins to the damn Zoo!”
Bubba boastfully replied, “I did take them to the Zoo, but I had alot of
money left over, so now we’re going to see a Disney movie.”

7) The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are not referred to as “Daddy,
Junior and the Spook”.
8) David slew Goliath; he did not “kick the shit out of him”.
9) When David was hit by a rock and was knocked off his donkey,
don’t say he was “stoned off his ass”.
10) We do not refer to the cross as the ‘Big T.’
11) When Jesus broke the bread at the last supper he said, ‘Take this
and eat it for it is my body.’ He did not say ‘Eat me’.
12) The Virgin Mary is not called ‘Mary with the Cherry’.
13) The recommended grace before a meal is not: “Rub-A-Dub-Dub
thanks for the grub, Yay God! Dig In”.
14) Next Sunday there will be a taffy pulling contest at St. Peter’s, not
a “Peter Pulling Contest at St. Taffy’s”.
A flat-chested young lady read an article in a magazine that stated Dr.

event! We have had upwards of 300 bikes on this run in the
