Iamintheprocessofbuildingupanewengineforthe'14.TowardthatgoalItoreaparta1919
enginethathadbeeninmypartsstashforabout15years.
Theenginehadbeenadecentrunnerbutwasina1925Fordorsedan.Thatcargotrestoredwitha
1925engine.Sothe1919enginesatonawoodendollyandgotmovedfromTexastoKentuckyto
VirginiaandbacktoTexasagain.

Removingthehogsheadandtheenginepanwasuneventful.Thepedalshaftswerealltightintheir
holes,suggestingalowmileageengine.Theenginehadabunchofmuckinitfromnondetergent
oil,butwasnottheworstIhaveseen.Thebandslookedalmostnew.Thetransmissiondrumsare
thebestIhaveeverfoundinanengine.


Theclutchspringwasweak.Youcouldtellitwasweakbecausesomeonehadadjustedthescrews
intothepointthatthegapmeasured1"insteadofthecorrect13/16".
Startedbybackingofftheadjusterscrewsandcompressingthespring:

Withtheclutchspringoffthedrivingplatecanbeunbolted.Theclutchplateswereremoved,
cleanedandinspected.Allareflat,therearenoscoremarks,justalittlehintofbluecolor.Almost
nowear.Theseplateswillbereused.
Iremovedthesetscrewfromtheclutchhubandpulledit:


Thebrakedrumhasalmostnowear,andnocracks.Thereisnowearonthelugsthattheclutch
platesdrive,justsomeshinyspotswheretheplatesmakecontact.


Iremovedtheclutchhubdrivekey.Thenthetransmissionshaftgetspressedout:

Theplanetgearsshownosignsofwear.Alltherivetsaretight.Theplanetshaftsaretightinthe
flywheel,mirrorfinish,withnosignofwear.Thereisnoperceptibleplayinanyofthebushings/
shafts.Iwillmeasurethemtonight.Myguessistheyarefitto.002.003".

NextItookthemagnetsofftheflywheel.Theyonlyliftaboutapoundandwillhavetobe
recharged.Thatandreplacingtheclutchspringaretheonlythingsneededotherthanreassembly.


Apparentlymydisassemblyofthetransmissionwasacompletewasteoftime!

Itisnotasslickasyoursbutinapinchwithasplitterandoldsheetsteelstockonhand,it
worked.IthinkIjustmaymakeuponelikeyours...itwouldbehardertolosethanmineis.

&2steelthrustwashersforallthecomponentstobe"happy"inrelationtoeachother.
Duetothe"flanged"bushingbeingunavailable,Lang'sstocksa"special"steelthrustwasherto
merelyinstallwith2ofthestockthicknessoneswiththebrakedrumbushingcurrentlyavailable
