Course Description:
This course gives an introduction to the fundamental concepts which
form the foundations of the main fields of Islamic knowledge; Aqeedah
and Tafseer (Discussed in this course IIS 011), Hadeeth and Fiqh
(Discussed in continuation course IIS 014).

Resources:
The source of these notes is extractions from some published works of
Dr. Bilal Philips namely: Islamic Studies Series, Books 1-4, The
Fundamentals of Tawheed, The Purpose of Creation, Usool at-Tafseer,
and The Evolution of Fiqh.
Objective:
This course enables a student to get an introduction to the main fields
of Islamic knowledge; Aqeedah, Tafseer, Hadeeth, and Fiqh, laying a
reliable foundation for them.
Class Content:
Class Procedure/Instruction Methodology:
Recorded lectures dedicated to the course material will be available for
online viewing or downloading.
Exams:
The course will contain module tests, and a final exam covering the
modules.
Attendance Policies:
The students are required to log in and use the provided materials.
There is no fixed time for accessing the content. Students may do it at
their own convenience. If any student does not log in for more than 3
months he or she will be automatically unenrolled.

Tawheed Ar-Ruboobeeya
Explanation of Maintaining the unity of Lordship.
Tawheed Al- Asmaa Was-Sifaat
Explanation of 5 main aspects of Maintaining the unity of Allahs
names and attributes.
Tawheed Al- Ibaada
Explanation of the most important aspect of Tawheed that is
maintaining the unity of worship.

Explanation of how shirk can take place with relation to Asmaawas Sifaat.
Explanation of Sub categories- Shirk by Humanization, and Shirk
by Deification.

Union of God with man
Explanation of some verses misinterpreted as showing union of
God with man.
The Development of Grave worship
Explanation of how grave worship is done in different ways by
various people.
Sub-topics explained: Prayer to the dead, Restrictions on visiting
graves, Taking graves as places of worship, Masjid with grave, the
Prophets(sallAllahu alaihi wa sallam) grave, virtue of prayer in

Module 5
The Purpose of Creation
Describes the purpose of our creation, the importance and
benefits of worshiping God; Elaboration on related verses from
Quran
I have created the jinn and humankind only for My
worship.[Quran 51:56]

Module 6
Collection of the Quran
Explains how the Quran was compiled and collected as one book
and the significance of the knowledge. It explains process of
revelation throughout the life of the Prophet (SallAllahu alaihi
was sallam).

Module 7
Makkan and Madeenan revelations
This module explains the special characteristics, and significance
of makkan and madeenan revelations that had been revealed
over a period of 23 years.

Discusses the meaning of the word Quran and its main theme.
Miracles of the Quran
Explains the miracles of the Quran. Say: even if all of mankind
and the jinn gather together to produce something like this
Quran, they will not be able to do so in spite of their cooperation
with each other.[Quran 17:88]
Module 9
Tafseer Methodology
Explains how the tafseer is done of the Quran and the necessary
conditions to be met for getting the correct tafseer of the
Quran.
