JOB TITLE: Program Officer - Land Rights and Social Movement Building
SUPERVISOR: Program Manager

DUTY STATION: Nakuru with frequent travel to the project sites

Kenya Land Alliance (KLA) is an NGO established to address the problem of inequitable access to
and use of land and other natural resources in Kenya. KLAs programmatic work focuses mainly on
(a) implementation of policy, legislative and institutional frameworks on land and natural resources
(b) supporting emergence of a movement of land marginalized groups (c) advocating for a
democratic framework for management of community land (d) promotion of secure of secure and
equitable land rights (e) Carrying out research, documenting and disseminating information on land
rights (f) promoting knowledge driven interventions in the land sector.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the direction of the Programmes Manager, the program officer shall perform the following
tasks related towards strengthened land governance and building active agency of Land
Marginalized Groups:

Support the building of social movement for strengthened land governance.


Support the implementation of and undertake logistical arrangements for programmatic
activities, with specific reference to emergency of a movement of land marginalized groups.
Promote and support knowledge driven interventions in the land sector.
Organize capacity building and training workshops for members and communities in land
governance and management
Facilitate and coordinate exchange visits and sharing of knowledge and experiences
Facilitate communities to negotiate benefit sharing agreements on investments in their local
natural resources
Promote establishment of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms

Facilitate marginalized land dependent communities to access legal support and asvice.
Assist Monitoring and Evaluation Program Officer in capturing data for monitoring and
evaluation of interventions in the land sector.
Prepare timely and accurate monthly program reports for approval and transmission to the
Monitoring and Evaluation Department by the Program Manager.
Analyze Kenyas political development and provide background material for program
documents, briefings and reporting.
Under the supervision of the Programmes Manager, prepare draft work plans for activities,
draft budgets and projections for activities and reconciles expenditure.
Supervision of program assistants and intern(s) as may be assigned to support the
implementation of the program activities under him/her.
Acts as back-up for and deputizing for the Program Manager in their absence.
Undertake other duties that may be assigned by the Progammes Manager and the Chief
Executive Officer

QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Advanced degree in Law, Public Interest Litigation, Environmental Law and a Post-Graduate
Diploma from Kenya School of Law
Working experience
At least 3 years experience in law practice
Ability to communicate in English and Kiswahili (Excellent verbal and written English)
Previous experience in producing Information, Educational and Communication (IEC)
materials
Proven experience and skill in using computer packages
Sound understanding of land context in Kenya
Previous experience in working with Civil Society Organizations

Capacity to meet strict deadlines
Good analytic and IT skills
Terms and Expression of Interest: This position is full-time on two year contract basis, with
possibility of renewal subject to availability of funding and good performance. Candidates wishing
