About African Leadership Academy

Developing the next generation of African leaders

African Leadership Academy (ALA) is a pre-eminent educational institution that seeks

to transform Africa by identifying, developing, and connecting its future leaders. The
Academy was founded on the philosophy that a new generation of ethical, committed
leaders is the key to Africas development. ALA seeks to become the training ground
for these future leaders. Each year, ALA draws the most outstanding students from
across Africa to its campus in South Africa for its flagship Two Year Pre-University
program; and every July and August, selected high potential students from across the
world attend the Academys Global Scholars Program. At ALA, young leaders build a
powerful intellectual foundation and develop their leadership capacity through ALAs
unique curriculum and learning environment.
With its audacious mission and lifelong engagement, ALA is unlike any school in the
world.

NEVER DOUBT THAT

A SMALL GROUP
OF THOUGHTFUL,
COMMITTED
CITIZENS CAN
CHANGE THE WORLD;
INDEED IT IS THE
ONLY THING THAT
EVER HAS.

GSP prepares future leaders from across the globe to explore their potential to create widespread
positive change. Using the Academys unique Entrepreneurial Leadership curriculum, participants
are pushed to discover their true potential, explore South Africa and the African continent, and to
examine models of leadership in a range of spheres.

GSP alumni return to their schools and communities equipped

to make an impact and to drive positive change.

MARGARET MEAD

The Global Scholars Program (GSP) at African Leadership Academy is a nineteen

day leadership development program for students from all over the world aged
between 15 and 19 years.
GSP provides a challenging and stimulating environment for emerging leaders
who will collaborate with a diverse group of their peers. It is a logical extension
of the Academys mission to develop the next generation of African leaders. In
this unprecedented era of globalisation, Africa will not develop in a vacuum. The
continents future will depend on the connections made between young leaders
from around the world and their ability to share ideas, identify opportunities and
build dynamic organisations.

Is GSP for you?

This is about vision.

Are you an aspiring leader who is curious about the world and your
role in it?
Do you believe in the power of young people and that they too can
drive positive change?
Are you ready to collaborate with others in the ALA community and
reach your full leadership potential?
If you answered yes to any of the questions above, then GSP is
for you. Through the program, participants strive to answer the
following critical questions:
How can the next generation of global leaders ensure a peaceful
and prosperous future for Africa and the world?
What are the skills young leaders everywhere in the world must
develop to create global change in the 21st century?

What we believe
This is about our values.

Integrity we are people of our word with the courage to do what

is right
Curiosity we challenge the status quo and take the initiative to
pursue new ideas
Humility we are thankful for our opportunities and are aware of
our limitations
Compassion we emphathize with and care for those around us
Diversity we respect all people and believe that difference should
be celebrated
Excellence we set high standards for our own achievement and
celebrate the achievements of others

Entrepreneurial Leadership
This is about direction.

The Global Scholars Program differs from other leadership

development offerings through the depth of experience we
provide. African Leadership Academy is the leading pan-African
educational institution in the world, with an outstanding track
record of connecting the continents most exceptional young
leaders with each other and with opportunities across the
globe.
Our unique leadership programming gives participants direct
access to leaders from the grassroots level to high-ranking
gurus in governance, civil society and business. Our focus
on community based service-learning engagements allows
young leaders to become immersed in the local culture and
community.

THE THREE WEEKS I SPENT

AT ALAS GSP WERE REALLY
MEANINGFUL. I LEARNT NEW
THINGS ABOUT MYSELF, THE WAY
I TREAT PEOPLE IN TEAMS FOR
EXAMPLE, AND HOW TO PRACTICE
GOOD LEADERSHIP SKILLS BUT
THE MOST IMPORTANT TAKE AWAY
IS THE FACT THAT I NOW SEE THINGS
DIFFERENTLY. I HAVE DISCOVERED
NEW VALUES AND IM NOT THAT
IMPULSIVE ANYMORE. I NOW KNOW
I CAN MAKE AN IMPACT IF I WORK
HARD AND THAT I CAN INSPIRE
OTHERS TO BE ACTIVE IN PURSUING
THEIR DREAMS. THIS WAS
CERTAINLY THE BEST EXPERIENCE
IVE EVER HAD.

Service Learning Projects

This is about community building.

Service Learning Projects are a distinguishing feature of the GSP

experience, enabling participants to go beyond volunteering. Working
in groups, GSP participants collaborate with the community they are
serving to co-create a solution to an identified problem. Participants
are challenged interact meaningful and refine their proposed product
or service to ensure it meets the needs of its intended users. Service
Learning Projects culminate in an Ideas Festival at which participants
present their work and proposed solution.

I HAVE ATTEMPTED TO
AID OTHERS BEFORE,
AND GAVE UP BEFORE
DEVELOPING MY IDEAS
FURTHER. GSP TAUGHT
ME TO DIFFERENTIATE
A WANT FROM A
NEED AND I CAN NOW
SUCCESSFULLY APPLY
THIS KNOWLEDGE
WHEN ASSISTING
OTHERS. GSP MADE ME
REALIZE WHO I WAS,
AND FOR THAT I AM
GRATEFUL.

Excursions

This is about exploring South Africa.

A series of excursions during GSP give participants the opportunity
to encounter wildlife on safari; learn about South Africas rich history
and culture; and explore city life in modern day Johannesburg.

AT GSP, I LEARNED A NUMBER OF USEFUL

LESSONS ABOUT WHAT MAKES A GREAT
LEADER. I ALSO ENJOYED THE WORK WE
DID AT OUR BUILD LAB SITE AS WELL AS
THE EXCURSIONS AND I AM GRATEFUL
THAT I LEARNED ABOUT THE BUILD
PROCESS. FURTHERMORE, I BELIEVE
THAT THE BUILD PROCESS AND THE
LESSONS I LEARNED ABOUT LEADERSHIP
CAN BE APPLIED TO ALMOST ANY
ENDEAVOR ONE CHOOSES TO TAKE ON IN
LIFE, AND HENCE, I WOULD RECOMMEND
THE GSP PROGRAM TO ANYBODY,
REGARDLESS OF WHAT THEIR ACADEMIC
INTERESTS MAY BE. I ALSO HAD THE
HONOUR OF MEETING A VERY DIVERSE
GROUP OF INDIVIDUALS FROM ALL OVER
THE WORLD, AND I WOULD ENCOURAGE
ANYONE TO TAKE THE OPPORTUNITY TO
GAIN EXPOSURE TO NEW PERSPECTIVES
AS I DID AT GSP.

FOR THE
THINGS
WE HAVE
TO LEARN
BEFORE
DOING, WE
LEARN BY
DOING.

Experiential learning
This is about doing.

This approach fosters proactivity, which is a trait that helps one to be

capable of foresight, prediction, or imagination and is able to avoid
being acted upon. This is very important in Experiential Learning as
the principles learnt challenge ones critical thinking and reinforces
learning by doing.

MEET THE
FACILITATORS
Each year, GSP is facilitated by a team that is comprised of the
Academys Entrepreneurial Leadership Faculty, Educators
from leading schools around the world and alumni of the
Academys two year program. Meet some of the past GSP
facilitators:

with opportunity for service learning and/or community work however,
Entrepreneurial Leadership goes a step further. It walks students through
a process that requires that they invest themselves in the use of their
knowledge, skills and networking abilities to do more than just visit
and serve. They partner, listen, and deliver based on the needs of the
community and most importantly, they then walk away, leaving the full
ownership of their proposed solutions to community partners without any

we are seeing the same effect. GSP is a life changing experience.

GSP is unique in all its aspects as a summer camp. The activities of the
camp have a way of impacting participants. The Soweto and Johannesburg
city tours bring alive the rich South African history that one only read about
in the history books. The excursions add a lot more emphasis to South
Africas culture. The life, bravery, courage and selfless determination of
the iconic leader, the late Nelson Mandela, becomes more vivid through
seminal readings and viewings.
Experientials teach life lessons and values that impact participants in their academic, professional and
private lives. The rich GSP curriculum and the intensity of the program as a whole encourage participants to
explore outside of their comfort zones.
Underpinning all the activities and components of the program are the life-long friendships created at GSP.
These friendships of like-minded young leaders will create a community of ethical leaders who will be the
movers and the shakers of the African continent and the entire world.

AFTER GSP

The time spent at GSP will continue to impact participants long after they have
returned home and as they go on to further opportunities. Hear from some past
participants who share with you the GSP difference in their lives:

Oluwatoni Agbeyangi, GSP 2014, Nigeria

Georgetown Prepatory School, Maryland

I attended GSP before moving to a new school in a different

country. My GSP experience changed and benefited me
especially because I was able to apply the Entrepreneurial
Leadership concepts and thinking strategies to navigate
my transition into a new environment. GSP was an eye
opener for me.

Zineb Benkirane, GSP 2014, Morocco

Al Jabr, Fez

GSP is a life-changing experience, and the best journey

I have ever had so far. The GSP experience is a short
sample of the life train. We celebrated diversity, worked
in houses, shared ideas, were inspired by African leaders,
and collaborated to develop and deliver the solution to
the need we identified.

Adeoluwatofunmi Adeyemi, GSP 2014,

United Kingdom
Cheltenham Ladies College, Gloucestershire

My school in England is very international but I can hand

on heart say that I have never been so close to and so
at ease with people from such diverse backgrounds. The
best aspect in my opinion was the way we bridged the
gaps between us, working together for the first time in a
large group and then being split into completely random
groups that were very different from the other groups
we had, thereby giving us the opportunity to work with
different people each time and get to know them.

GSP 2013, Zimbabwe

Julia heard about GSP through her friends graduates of ALA,

who she met during the Yale Young Global Scholars Program.
They told her about ALA and what and specifically about the
Global Scholars Program which she could be a part of.
She later applied and was accepted. She was excited to have
been accepted as she is very passionate about changing the
world and being involved in programs that would enable her to
make that change.

Dumi heard about GSP through United World Colleges (UWC),

the school he attended at the time. He applied and was accepted
to be a part of what he says was a lot of fun.

Julia values the lessons she learned while being at GSP, and has
been inspired to use what she has learned in college going forth,
as well as in her career.
Julia founded both the organisations she is a part of in 2012.
Pretty Purposeful is a non-profit she founded to help provide
funding and raise awareness for child birth injuries in Sierra
Leone, Kenya and Malawi. Youth Corp is a network of youth-run
organisations, such as non-profits, businesses and initiatives
that seek to encourage youth to aspire to make a difference by
starting up organisations headed by the youth.

He valued the fact that he was able to learn and interact with
a diverse group of people from all over the world. It was also
an opportunity to learn about South Africas rich history. The
experientials and excursions were another aspect he found
enjoyable, as his perceptions and way of thinking were being
challenged.
Dumi decided to join the 2015 GSP sessions as an intern during
his summer break. He was glad to be back to play a role in the
lives of others and to show gratitude to ALA for what the GSP
experience taught him.
Dumi is passionate about healthcare and is currently a Biology
student at Duke University and hopes to work in the healthcare
industry once he completes his studies.

Her experience summed up in her own words: This experience

has been amazing. I can honestly say it has been lifechanging and I have learned so much about South Africa and
that leadership is really about taking ownership as a leader.
You cant control others and what happens around you, but it
is all about your response-ability to situations.

GSP 2013, Loyola Jesuit College

Kelvin learned about GSP through the UJIMA Subukia Scholarship

Fund, a charitable organization which operates a scholarship
program for secondary school students in Kenya. Kelvin applied
and he attended GSP in 2011, a year before he graduated from
high school.
In 2012 he started his own company in Nairobi using the
entrepreneurial skills he learned at ALA after identifying a
need in his community soon after he returned home. Sunrise
Tracking provides vehicle tracking systems for individuals and
companies that can be fully managed through a linked mobile
phone. His latest innovative addition to his system is the ability
to immobilize a vehicle via text message.
Kelvin says GSP was a brain-opener that allowed him to learn
and fully explore his leadership and entrepreneurial potential and
address an issue in his community. Since its inception, Sunrise
Tracking has assisted hundreds of vehicle owners to manage
and secure their assets through a mobile phone application
for both tracking and CCTV surveillance. With the leadership
skills I acquired, I managed to be an effective change-maker
who transformed society positively.

Nana Ama was interested in the Global Scholars Program whilst

attending Loyola Jesuit College in Nigeria. The Global Scholars
Program offered a chance to learn about African Leadership
Academy.
The experience she had as part of the program was an
enlightening one for Nana Ama. She had the opportunity to
develop entrepreneurial skills through the Entrepreneurial
Leadership curriculum, which composed of experientials that
enforced critical thinking.
She was able to identify her passions and interests which she
harnessed when she eventually attended ALA. Nana Ama is a
believer of doing well for her country and was excited to use the
lessons she learnt to their maximum potential. GSP was a great
path for Nana Ama to develop and grow as a future leader.
She takes initiative on a lot of projects, one being MUNATICS,
which she co-founded as a student enterprise at ALA.
MUNATICS sought to improve ethics education in schools and
business environments. She also developed a keen interest in
youth employment as she believes is key to the prosperity of
the African continent.
She is currently enrolled at the University of Toronto and hopes
to study International Business and Law. She also hopes to
invest in vocational training through the establishment of a top
class training school in Ghana that would train young people
in developing skills in bead making, catering, hairdressing and
fashion design. She is keen to invest in young people who have
entrepreneurial potential and help under-privileged children in
Ghana and Nigeria.
