1. Indicate which essay question you will be answering:

EVO [ ] ARCH [ ] SCL (A) [ O ] SCL (B) [ ]
2. Using the required APA style, list the additional peer reviewed source (other than the
required one(s)) that you plan to use in your essay. Three lines only.
Marie Lacroix (2006). Social work with asylum seekers in Canada: The
case for social justice. International Social Work, 49(1), 19-28.
doi:10.1177/0020872806059399

3. For both the required scholarly source(s) and the additional source youve listed above,
summarize each articles main argument or idea in the space below in your own words.
Required source (four lines only)

This article emphasizes the importance of how the unity of different cultural groups greatly
benefits a nation, and how the use of ethnography can help achieve this unity amongst
immigrants and the members of the nation by using it to develop new policies and programs that
are designed to help integrate immigrants into the community

Additional source (four lines only)

This article discusses how international and Canadian immigration policies are unjust to
immigrants (particularly asylum seekers), by causing things such as unemployment and family
separation to them, and how social workers must understand and connect with these asylum
seekers to solve this issue.
4. Write a paragraph briefly describing the focus of your essay and the position you will be
developing or arguing. Three lines only.
My essay will focus on the impacts of different immigrations in different countries and will be
developing how sociocultural anthropologists must understand and study and understand ones
culture and nature to help with immigration policies designed to bring immigrants social justice

5. Describe one piece of evidence from each article that you will use to develop your own
essay. Describe how it will fit into your essay (it might be an example that supports your
argument, a counter-example that you need to address, or a point that you can further
build on and elaborate).
Evidence from the required article (four lines only)

In the case with Andalusia, an ethnographic interview were conducted with host nationals on
topics similar to immigration to identify common patterns in responses among them. Using the
data of the ethnographic study, it was discovered how various types of circumstances (for
example, the economy) inform the way Andalusians view immigration.
This will fit into my essay as follows (four lines only):

A common theme of mutual respect was clearly noticeable during the interviews. By
developing policies where the host nation and immigrants are solely dependent on each other,
immigrants can be major contributors to the host nation, similar to the rest of the society and thus
can blend in rather than being viewed as abnormal.
Evidence from the second required article (four lines only) (Answer only for the EVO topic):

Evidence from the additional article (four lines only):

The article stated that in Quebec, only thirty percent of asylum seekers were employed and the
professional qualifications that these asylum seekers held were being ignored, which forced most
asylum seekers to use social welfare as a source of money.
This will fit into my essay as follows (four lines only):

In the long run with so many asylum seekers using social welfare, there could be a big economic
strain on the country. A study of the immigrants work history, unique skills, and culture could
have shown the potential (positive) impact in the country, and could have led to policies being
developed in helping immigrants maintain financial security while contributing to the society.

6. Compare and contrast the required article(s) and the additional article and explain how
they relate to the focus of your essay. Examine the main ways they each present their
arguments or interpretive frameworks, and how they use evidence to support them. You
might compare differences in the authors' conceptual approaches, in the kinds of evidence
they use, or the kinds of conclusions they draw from their evidence. You do not need to state
or argue your own opinion here, but you are encouraged to comment on the authors'
reasoning in the articles. Use 600 words or less.
NOTE:
If you can say the same thing more briefly then do so. More words will not necessarily get you a better mark.
Use well-structured paragraphs, but dont include a formal introduction or conclusion. Use in-text
citations as required for the essay, but dont include a reference list.

Using both articles, I plan to compare the different type of immigration in different countries that
each article presents, and ultimately show that in both cases, the understanding of ones culture,
beliefs can be an instrumental idea for sociocultural anthropologists to use in order to help
develop upon immigration policies that are placed today.
The required article seeks to help the transition phase for a person immigrating to another
country easier through the use of ethnographic studies. It shows a case of ethnographic study
done in Andalusia, Spain, which is a country that is not used to very much immigration until
recent years. An ethnographic interview was held with Andalusians and one of the prominent
themes from the result showed the importance of mutual respect among them. A lot can be
made out of this theme and suggests that the society (in this case, Spain) should develop policies
around these themes and welcome immigrants with open arms so they adding a unique spin on
their customs and traditions
The additional article focuses on developing better immigration policies for asylum seekers in
Canada, who are special type of immigrants that relocated to other countries due to the unsafe
conditions they live in. This article relates to the focus of my essay by highlighting the issue of
disconnect between Canada and asylum seekers and shows it through the unemployment and
family separation these asylum seekers experience through. This ultimately suggests different
policies to integrate both sides together to fit in, and bring social justice to the asylum seekers.
The article also showcases the mistakes Canada has made in dealing with these special type of
refugees through actions such as the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. They state how
this act has the right to refuse people due to their history and does not take into account of what
they had to experience immigrating. This situation again suggest the importance of mutual
understanding and communication to help immigrants.
