Topic: Boiler Emergency Operations

Emergency operations to be carried out during following conditions

Abnormality in the system

Equipments failure

General guidelines for emergency operations

1) Emergency preparedness
2) Priority during operation
3) Sequence of operations.
1. Emergency preparedness:
Every operator should be ready for emergency physically and mentally.
There should be a plan for every emergency operation
Keep every system ready for emergency operation.
Time management
2. Priority during operation:
1st priority: To the personnel
2nd priority: To the system
3rd priority: To the equipment
4th priority: for the tripping
5th priority: to efficiency
3. Sequence of Operations:
On priority basis and duration of the incident the sequence of operations to be pre-defined
Abnormality in the system:
a. Load thrown off
b. Boiler trip
c. Turbine trip
d. Total power failure
e. DCS failure
f. DC failure
g. Equipments failure
h. Boiler tube failure
i. Boiler Explosion
a) Load thrown off: During sudden load thrown off the following parameters will change suddenly
1. Main steam pressure
2. Main Steam temperature
3. Re-heater pressure and temperature
4. Drum level
5. ESP inlet temperature
Reasons and operations to be carried out:
1) Main Steam pressure: Due to sudden reduction in Main Steam flow the Main Steam pressure will
increase. To control the pressure, the HP and LP bypass systems will operate in auto. Even after the
opening of these systems if the load thrown off is more, then EMRVs will open in auto. If these are not
sufficient the MS and drum safety valves will float. For seating back the safety valves startup vents to be
operated
2) Main Steam temperature: Due to sudden variation in pressure, the temperature will raise as the
differential pressure across the temperature control valve decreases. The ratio of sensible heat, latent

heat and superheat changes, due to sudden operation of FCS control valves the BFP discharge pressure
will change and there will be drop in feed water temperature. Operators should take the attemparation
control into manual and control the temperature. Fine control of MS pressure leads to easy control of
temperature. Further the attemparation pressure (i.e. FW pressure) to be adjusted.
3) Re-heater pressure and temperature: Due to sudden opening the HP bypass valve the pressure of
reheater will increase. The pressure to be controlled by operating the LP bypass and re-heater startup
vents. Due to sudden opening of HP bypass the reheater inlet temperature will increase this will be
controlled by HP bypass attemparation. If the temperature couldnt control by HP bypass attemparation
then urgent attemparation to be operated.
4) Drum level:
