Objective: After completion of this course students will have the skills and capability to be able
to affectively use information and communications technology in todays business world. It will
provide students the basic knowledge of computer such as hardware, software, computer
languages, operating systems, compilers and data communication as well as practical knowledge
of different types of operating systems and application packages. The issues related with ICT and
business will also be discussed.
Course Contents:
Mid -Term 1 Exam:
Introduction to ICT and an overview of Computer Basics including hardware (Input,
Processing, Output, Storage and Communication) and software (System and Application
software)
Data Representation and Number Systems: Decimal, Binary, Octal and Hexadecimal
number system and conversion of numbers between different systems.
Details of computers: CPU, Registers, Machine Cycle, Memory, Expansion slots and
Factors affecting processing.
Introduction to Operating Systems Windows, Linux etc.
Operations on Windows operating system
Lab Word processing applications (i.e. MS Word)
Mid-term 2 Exam:
Components of a microcomputer
Level of Computer Languages (i.e. Machine, Assembly, High Level, Source, Object,
Compiler and Assembler Languages etc)
Lab -Use of Spreadsheet (i.e. MS Excel: Functions, Pivot tables, Macros etc.)
Final Exam:
Networks and Data Communication, LAN, MAN, WAN, Network Topology, Network
Protocol and Services, Network Hardware and Media, Hubs, Bridges, Routers and
Gateways.
Basics of Network security concept
Internet and Intranet, Web Browsers, Search Engines

E-commerce, Online Shopping, Online Banking


Overview of database systems

There is zero tolerance for cheating at EWU. Students caught with cheat sheets in
their possession, whether used or not used, and/or copying from cheat sheets,
writings on the palm of hand, back of calculators, chairs or nearby walls, etc. would
be treated as cheating in the exam hall. The only penalty for cheating is expulsion
from EWU.
