AtSGH,patientshaveaccesstoover600doctorsfromover30clinicalspecialties.Ourdedicatedteamofhealthcareprofessionalsiscommittedtogiveeachpatientthequalityof
carethatwouldbestaddresstheclinicalproblem.ThissectionwillhelptofamiliariseyouwithourEmergencyDepartment.

RegistrationandTriage
AsanEmergencyDepartment,ourpriorityistoattendtopatientswithseriousillnessesandinjuries.
Tofacilitatethis,wewillassessyourmedicalconditionatTriageafteryouhaveregisteredatourRegistrationCounter,andsometimes,evenbeforeregistrationifthesituationso
demands.TheEmergencyDepartmentatSGHisoneofthebusiestinthecountry.ThereisaSeniorEmergencyPhysicianondutyoneveryshift.

Triage
AttheTriageRoom,ourstaffwill:
takeashorthistoryofyourillness.
recordyourvitalsignsliketemperature,pulse,respirationandbloodpressure.
Pleaseassistthestaffbygivingthemalltherelevantandaccurateinformation.Youwillbeassignedaspecificprioritylevelaccordingtotheseverityofyourmedicalcondition.Our
staffwilladviseyouoftheappropriateareatogotoforconsultationandtreatment.Thereareseparatewaitingareasforpatientswithdifferentprioritylevels.
Ourstaffwillalsoinformyouoftheestimatedwaitingtime.Wewouldliketoassureyouthatalleffortswillbemadetoseeyoupromptly.

PriorityLevels
Therearefourdifferentlevelsofpriorityandtheyareasfollows:

Priority1Resuscitation&CriticallyillPatients
PatientsinastateofcardiovascularorimminentcollapseareattendedtoimmediatelyattheResuscitationArea.
Thedoctorswillspeaktothefamilymemberaftertheyhaveassessedandstabilisedthepatient.
Examples:Heartattack,severeinjuries,severebleeding,shockandsevereasthmaattack.

Priority2MajorEmergencies(NonAmbulant)
PatientswithacutemedicalconditionsthatmustbeinitiallytreatedintheHospital.Theyareinstableconditionanddonotrequireresuscitation.Theyarerequiretobetrolley
basedforpatientexaminationandtreatment.ThesepatientsareattendedtoearlyattheCriticalCareArea.
Thedoctorswillspeaktothefamilymemberaftertheyhaveinitiallyassessedthepatient.
Examples:Majorlimbfracture/dislocation,moderateinjuries,severeabdominalpainandotherseveremedicalillnesses.

Priority3MinorEmergencies(Ambulant)
Patientswithacutesymptomswhoareinastableconditionandareabletowalk.ThesepatientsmaybetreatedbyGeneralPractitioners(GP)/FamilyPhysicianswithacutecare
resourcesorattheEmergencyDepartment.AfterTriage,theyareseenattheEmergencyAmbulatoryCareArea.
Familymembersmayentertheconsultationroomwiththepatient,buttheymaybeaskedtotakeaseatinthewaitingareawhenexaminationsandproceduresarebeing
performed.
Examples:Sprains,minorinjuries,minorabdominalpain,vomiting,fever,rashesandmildheadaches.

Priority4NonEmergency
Anoldinjuryoraconditionthathasbeenpresentforalongtime.ThesepatientsshouldpreferablybeattendedtobyGeneralPractitioners(GP)/FamilyPhysicians.TheEmergency
Departmentisnottheappropriatefacilityfortheircare.YoumaywishtogotoyourownGeneralPractitionerortoapolyclinic.
Examples:Chronicjointpains,chronicskinrash,longtermnasaldischarge,oldscars,cataracts,removaloftattoosandsorethroats.

PatientsWithFever
PatientswithfeverwillbemanagedinaseparateareaintheEmergencyDepartment.ThisistoreducetheriskofinfectiontotheotherpatientsintheEmergencyDepartment.

WaitingTime
Thewaitingtimereferstotheperiodfromthetimeyoupresentinthedepartmentuntilyourconsultationwiththedoctor.Thewaitingtimemaydependonvariousfactors.
However,ifyourconditionhasbeenassessedtobeseriousatTriage,youwillbeattendedtoearlier.

ConsultationandTreatment
Dependingonyourmedicalcondition,ourdoctorsmaydecideonthefollowingforyou:
ReviewbydoctorsfromotherdepartmentsWhenyourmedicalconditionrequiresareviewbydoctorsfromotherdepartmentsofSGH,wewillcalltherespective
doctorstoattendtoyou.
Observationafterinitialtreatment/investigationsAfterinitialtreatmentandinvestigations,wemayobserveyouintheEmergencyObservationWardforanumber
ofhours.Followingreview,adecisioncanthenbemadeastowhetheryourconditionrequiresinhospitaladmissionoroutpatientcare.
AdmissionWhenthereisaneedforfurtherinvestigationsandtreatmentinaninpatientsetting,wewilladmityouasaninpatient.
DischargeforhomeAftertreatment,youmaybedischargedwithorwithoutmedication.ThedoctormayalsoreferyoutoourSpecialistOutpatientClinic,yournearest
polyclinicoryourownfamilyphysician.

FollowupAppointment
IfthedoctorrefersyoutoourSpecialistOutpatientClinic,ourstaffwillgiveyouanoutpatientappointmentletterwiththedateandtimeofyourappointment.

CollectionofMedication
Ifyourdoctorhasprescribedmedicationforyoutotakehome,youmaycollectyourmedicationatthePharmacy.

Payment
ThecurrentchargesforEmergencyDepartmentcanbefoundhere(http://www.sgh.com.sg/patientservices/chargespayment/pages/outpatientcharges.aspx).Our
A&Eservice&facilityfeecoversbasicinvestigationsandservicesprovided.Specialisedemergencyinvestigationsandserviceswillinvolveextracostandhenceadditionalcharges.
Youmaypaybycash,NETS,personalchequeorcreditcard.Ifyourdoctordecidestoadmityou,thefeeswillbeincludedinyourtotalhospitalbill.

Admission
OurstaffattheAdmissionsCounterwillassistyouwiththeadmissionandhelpyoudecideonyourroomtype,bygivingyoutheestimatedcostofhospitalisationandthedeposit
required.

Childrenbelow12yearsold
InSGH,wedonothavethefacilitiestotreatyoungpatients.OurpaediatriciansarestationedatKKH.Usuallybeforesendingyoungpatientsover,wewillstabilizetheircondition
first.
