The UK Border Agency (UKBA) is responsible for securing the United Kingdom borders

and controlling migration in the United Kingdom. The Agency manages border control
for the United Kingdom, enforcing immigration and customs regulations. The Agency
considers applications for permission to enter or stay in the United Kingdom, citizenship
and asylum. Immigration is one of the highest profile national and global issues.

The International Group of the Agency has responsibility for handling applications
submitted overseas for Entry Clearance into the United Kingdom. The International
Group has a strong history for cutting edge innovation. It has set the standard in the use
of biometrics, commercial partners and excellent customer service.

Applications are invited for Immigration Assistant position - This is a temporary 5 month
maternity cover position - at the British Consulate in Los Angeles. The successful
applicants will work as part of a large team handling the efficient and secure delivery of
UK immigration services in the United States handling about 30,000 visa applications a


• Accurate data entry

• Processing mailed visa applications for presentation to a senior officer
• Printing and dispatching visas
• Managing walk-in enquiries from the public
• Delivery of first class customer service
• Clerical and other administrative duties as required


• Strong English language skills both oral and written

• Candidates should have competent drafting skills and a good telephone manner
• Essential qualities are courtesy, patience and tolerance towards persons of all
nationalities with varying fluency in English
• An ability to work quickly, efficiently and methodically as part of a team often under
• Candidates should have proficient communication and keyboard skills. You will be
expected to provide evidence of typing skills of at least 25 words per minute. You can
check your typing speed by entering the words ‘typing test’ into a search engine such as
Google and selecting one of the providers of free typing speed tests. You must print out
your result as evidence of your competence and bring it with you to interview.

Under US State Department requirements, the British Embassy network may only
employ, as non-diplomatic staff, persons who are US citizens, US Green Card holders or
A Visa holders. If you hold a Visa other than an A Visa you are not currently eligible to
work in the British Embassy network. All candidates will be subject to background
checks and security clearance.
