Club holding free
vision screening
The Howard City Lions Club will
hold free vision screening for children
between the ages of 1 through 5 years
old. The free screening will take place
at the Panhandle Area Community
Expo on April 30th at the Tri County
High School.
Why free vision screening for
children? 1 in 20 children suffer from
amblyopia (“lazy eye”). Amblyopia is
the leading cause of blindness in chil-
dren. It is preventable and more eas-
ily treated if detected early. For your
child to participate in the screening,
you must complete and return a con-
sent form. Forms are available at the
following locations: The Village of
Howard City Offices, Reynolds Town-
ship Offices, Timothy C. Hauenstein
Reynolds Township Library, or call

ing their White Cane Campaign at

The popular local band “Braun-
schweiger Blues Band” will be per-
forming at the Dogwood Center for
Performing Arts on Friday, May 1 at
7:30 p.m. in the Black Box. Playing
country and good old classic rock and
roll with a few surprises thrown in,
this band creates a fun and entertain-
ing experience for the audience. A lit-
tle Seeger, Skynyrd, Stones and much
more ... all the great tunes you love to
dance to and sing along with!

Chandonnet on drums and vocals;

and vocals; Wade Perkins on horns,

OBITUARY
Barbara Bogardus, age 78 of Howard City, passed
away April 14, 2010, at Spectrum Health Butterworth
Campus. She was born November 21, 1931 in Battle
Creek, MI, the daughter of John and Helen (Dowl-
ing) Willison. During her working years she worked
at the Howard City Plaza for 26 years starting out as
a cashier and becoming the Produce and Bakery man-
ager. Barb was a faithful and hardworking member of
the Howard City Ladies Auxiliary for 26 years. She en-
joyed Bingo, going to the Casino, and she was proud of
her Irish heritage. Surviving are her step Mother Ruth
Sharkey of Howard City, three sons Jim (Jan) of How-
ard City, Scott (Toni) of White Cloud, Fred (Brenda) of
Grand Rapids, five daughters Beverly Guthrie and spe-
cial friend Gary of Coral, Theresa (Mike) Carr of Sand
Lake, Deb (Mike) Bowen of Howard City, Cathy (Phil)
Stoddard of Powamo, Jody (Ron) Ostma of Allegan, 30
grandchildren, and 31 great grandchildren, step broth-
ers Gerry Rees of Coloma, and Dick Rees of Howard
City, a sister-in-law Teresa Bogardus of Howard City,
and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in
death by her parents, her husband Fred in 1995, a son-
in-law Gary, and three grandchildren, Duane, Tiffany
and Katelyn. Funeral services took place at Christ The
King Catholic Church with Father James Wyse officiat-
ing, with burial in the Reynolds Cemetery. Memorials
to The Ladies Auxiliary may be left at the Heckman
Funeral Home.

they develop work skills by making

also assist the seniors in making a
“spring” card.
Lakeview Area Seniors is a non-
denominational group gathering
on the first Tuesday of each month
from 1:00 to 3:00. The purpose of
the group is to provide meaningful
information and education in ad-
dition to opportunity for socializa-
tion. Interested people of all ages
are encouraged to attend.

determination was based on Tri County Area School district’s 2007-2008 data
submission in the Single Record Student Database, one of Michigan’s student data
tracking systems. It is important to understand that all local school districts in our
county were found to have similar compliance issues, as well as many other local
districts across the state.
Upon receiving the notification of noncompliance, Tri County Area Schools
took immediate action. Our special education staff participated in meetings to gain
a better understanding of those components of our noncompliance. The district also
made the decision to centralize data submission into the state data system in an effort
to decrease possible data submission errors. Through much hard work from all of
our special education staff, building secretaries, and Sherry Wheeler at the central
office, the State has verified as of April 14, 2010 that Tri County Area School district

after a car accident in January.
The school held an assembly on March 25,
honoring Kim and letting her know how much she
is missed.
The accident happened on January 26 as she
was driving to school in the morning. Bad road
conditions caused her vehicle to leave the road,
trapping her inside.
Kim has made great strides in regaining her
strength while keeping a positive attitude.
