San Isidro Campus AN ESSAY ON THE TOPIC: WHAT IS MORE DOMINANTTOP-DOWN OR BOTTOM-UP TYPE OF READING They say that by reading, knowledge is built. In line with this, many a number of scholars and intellectuals are pushing young minds to invest on books and reading the same instead of wasting their time updating their social media. I conform to this; in our house, I was brought up by my parents loving books than watching idly in the television. I am proud to say that I am one of those lucky individuals who are reared adoring reading than any other activities and hobbies. Recently, I stumbled in one concept in schooltype of reading. It says that there is this top-down and bottom down type of reading. In this connection, we were assigned to write an essay on what do we think is more dominant on us. I would choose the bottom-up type of reading. I observed myself before choosing this answer. While reading, I realized that my process goes from small to larger units. After I recognized the letters and knew the word the combinations of the letters are, I extract its meaning from the said lexicon. Afterwards, I construct the meaning of the phrase or the clause by gathering the meaning of each word. Then, I build up the meaning for a sentence by assembling the meaning of each phrase or clause. Simply put, I give meaning to the sentence after I combine the smaller units of it. I think this is really me because I am the type of person who does not want to assume or predict things. My reading model defines the personality of me being a reader. Before I come up and jump with a conclusion, it is indispensable that I be presented with all the facts and circumstances of the scenario. I believe that bottom-up reading should be more emphasized and given larger accord not only because this is the type of reading I conform to but also because I believe that to become the best one must first stick to the basic. In the bottom up reading, decoding skills are strengthened compare to top-down. When one is skillful in decoding skills, he has the advantage over reading foreign languages. Moreover, I believe that the traditional form of bottom-up reading is crucial for todays learning, for it has already survives the test of time and proved to be worthy of credence. And more specially, I think that a good reader has in her a quality of a good linguist for she has a wide array of vocabulary and good grammar skills. Hence, it is only proper and appropriate that bottom up type of reading would be of great support and help to the Philippine Education System. Especially given the facts that we are still a fledgling nation in terms of educational background and materials, bottom up reading model would best support the country and its citizen.
