Key Vocabulary Key Questions Differentiation Extension
Introduction/Mental Oral Starter:
Explain to the pupils we will be walking around both the Clumps throughout this session.
There are only a few rules before we start.
Please dont pick anything still living or attached to something living.
Feel free to pick up leaves and stones off the floor to have a closer look
Do not approach any animals, at some points of the year there are cows or sheep
grazing in the field.
Pupils can run, but please give them points, which are within your sight, to stop at.
Do not cross the road at the bottom without supervision
Once the rules have been explained begin the walk with pupils.
Assessment opportunities/strategies (what, how, who, when?)
Ask questions about the rules to double check pupils understand.

Session one

Development: To include Whole

Class/Group/Independent

At six points of the walk there are laminated trigger photos.

These photos can be scanned with the Aurasma app and a
video will play over the top of them. For this to work pupils need
to open the app and this screen will appear. The dot will move
in and out until the video starts to play, this could take several
seconds.

2 hours

At the end of each video these will always be a question to

encourage the children to think and discuss their ideas. Please
help facilitate these conversations and encourage the quieter
members of the group to put their ideas forward.
In bold are the questions that will appear and then some other questions you may like to ask
to encourage a dialogue between pupils.

1. What do you think they (the Romans) did?

Why do you think this? What do you already know about the Romans?
2. What do you think we will be using to create energy in 2020?
How are we making energy at the moment? Have you seen anything
else making energy? Wind Turbines?
3.How would you and your friends solve this problem?
Does this differ from what you think the Romans did? Why would you
solve it this way? What is the best outcome?
4.Is there an instance in your life you wish you resolved in a
better way?
Can you explain this to me? What do you wish you had done? How
would this have changed the outcome?
5.Do you know the genre of this story?
What feature of the story make you think that?
6.Can you change one thing in the story? How would this
change the rest of the story?
This is a map of the walk and the placement of all six trigger photos. You may like to
challenge pupils to find the trigger photos themselves or just print one off yourself and lead
the group to each photo. A fully printable version is available on the website.

Session one

10
minutes
Please take photos throughout the trip! These can be useful when you get back to the
classroom and we would love to see them on twitter @Wclumps.
Assessment opportunities/strategies (what, how, who, when?)
Listen to the group discussions at the end of each video.

Plenary/Conclusion:

Sentence tennis pick up a stick and pass it to a child, whoever has the stick has to say
one sentence of the story about what happened when the Romans arrived in the area. They
can then pass this stick to another child who has to carry on the story.
Throughout this time allow the pupils to generate questions they still have about the clumps
or its history. These can then be answered throughout the afternoon session.

Assessment opportunities/strategies (what, how, who, when?)

Which children can remember the story?
