Pastoral Corner
Have you ever been pulled up by the roots and shaken? We may feel this way when change comes into our lives.
The recent announcement by the Paulist Fathers leadership about leaving Saint Philip Neri, after more than a century
in Portland, sure feels like were being pulled up by the roots and shaken.
I used to grow bonsai trees. Every year you have to take them out of the pot, loosen the root ball, and cut off the
roots that merely circle the inside of the pot. Those roots simply tighten the root ball and make it harder for water to
be absorbed. Loosening the root ball and pruning the roots makes room for a healthier bonsai.
Jesus tells us a parable about an unfruitful fig tree. I imagine that the owner of the vineyard in which there was a fig
tree came with keen disappointment to see that in three years the fig tree had not produced fruit.
She was impatient with the lack of fruit. She said to the gardener, So cut it down. Why should it exhaust the soil?
But the gardener said leave it for this year also, and I shall cultivate the ground around it and fertilize it; it may bear
fruit in the future.
What does this parable represent? We are the owner of the vineyard. The vineyard is our life. We are the fig tree.
The fig tree is something in our life that we feel is nonproductive. Maybe its our work, or school, or some creative
outlet. Maybe its a friendship, or a family relationship. Maybe its a cause were dedicated to, or even our religion. It
has come to seem like a waste of time and space.
But the gardener, who is God, sees things differently. God sees potential. And to arrive at the potential is going to
take some digging. Maybe painful digging. We have to let change into our lives. We have to allow the pain of the
shovel, the cutting of roots (like the roots of the bonsai), and the smell of the manure. We have to let our life be dug
up and fertilized.
Meanwhile we live in the present moment. We cup our hands and let the healing water of Gods grace run through
our fingers onto the earth, making it fruitful. At Saint Philip Neri we are going right on with life and worship and
many activities in the parish. We are taking things a day at a time. As the Apostle Paul says,
Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep
your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the
Lords people who are in need. Practice hospitality. (Romans 12:10-12)
God Bless all who grace us with their presence at Saint Philip Neri.
IMMIGRATION STORIES
We are still looking for stories about where
your family originated and how you arrived
in Portland. Did you know one parishioner
is a descendant of slaves & another
escaped Viet Nam on a small fishing boat.
Check out the map in the foyer of the
church for these and other interesting
immigration stories.
