B. Checking Shipment
Check your shipment at the time of pickup and delivery against the packing list furnished
with the shipment. If a shortage exists or if any damaged material is evident, note such
shortage or damage on the freight bill before you sign for the shipment.
Claims of shortages will not be honored after thirty days from receipt of shipment.
Parts that are short or damaged are the responsibility of the delivering carrier, not the
manufacturer or dealer.
It is advisable to reorder damaged or missing parts immediately so that there will be no
delay in erecting the bin. After receiving the invoice for the reordered material, file a
claim with the delivering carrier at once.
The galvanized panels leave our plant in prime condition; store off the floor in a heated
room if possible. If stored outside, place panels down, off the ground. Upon arrival of
shipment if you are not certain whether or not moisture is present, store panels on edge or
on end allowing 1/4 air space between panels until dry. Exposure to trapped moisture
can cause white rust, which will void the warranty.
D. Site Selection
Choose a site that has good drainage away from the bin so that water will not stand around
the bin. The soil should be firm and preferably without fill. If fill is required, water and
compact the fill material to avoid uneven settlement. A field investigation of the soil
bearing conditions is recommended especially for larger grain bins where the foundation
loads and floor pressure become large. A licensed engineering firm should be employed to
take soil borings, determine the maximum allowable soil pressure and design the bin
foundations and floor slab accordingly.
Page 15
WARNING:
If it is necessary to leave the construction site for any length of time before the Bin is
completed and anchored to the concrete, the Bin must be securely tied down.

Wipe off the outside ends of all the Sidewall Sheets to remove excess oil so that the Strip
Caulking will adhere to the metal. Place the Strip Caulking as near to the vertical inside edge of
sheet at every vertical seam.
On Bins 12 gauge or heavier a horizontal strip of caulking is needed on the inside at the center
bottom of the Sidewall sheet located on the hill near to the bottom holes. This strip of caulking
should fit where the endlap of the next ring Sidewall Sheets bolts up to this location.

sidewall and rafters, pre-assemble these brackets on the ground before raising the roof will speed
up erection time.
Top Angle
Attach top angle to inside of top ring as shown with 5/16 x 3/4 Bin Bolts.
Note: there is (1) piece of top angle per top sidewall sheet. Ex: CB34 = 34 top angle
Page 24
Page 25
C. Roof Assembly
Pre-assemble rafter sections together as shown on flat surface. Rafter to rafter connections
should be tightened before raising rafters into place. Raise the peak ring to the correct height as
shown and begin attaching rafter to the peak ring and eave brackets with 1/2 x 1-1/2 bolt with
washers on the brackets. Attach 4 sets of rafters equally spaced around the bin and check to
insure peak ring is level, and then install all other beams. Leave all ring segment and strut bolts
loose in the structure until all rafters and ring segments and struts are installed.
Refer to the drawing below for sequence of beams.
Refer to the part identification page at the beginning of this section to determine proper rafters.
Page 26

the 2 ring top stiffener, with 7/16 x 1-1/2 bin bolts with bolt head inside the bin, as shown.
(Note: one L.H. and one R.H. Eave Bracket per sidewall sheet equally spaced around the bin)
Page 35
Roof Ring
After all the structure is assembled, attach roof rings to eave brackets between every rafter.
Attach roof rings loosely to rafter clips with x 2 bolts, add shims between plates on roof ring
and eave brackets as needed, so roof rings are tight against rafters all around bin. When
tightening roof rings to rafters, check that rafters are being held straight. Add additional shims as
needed to keep rafters straight.
Page 36
Page 37
Always working to the right around the bin, place strip caulking on right rib of the previously
installed roof panel (top only). Placing roof panel in a vertical position, lock the left rib of the
panel being installed over the right rib of the previously installed panel. Tip the roof panel down.
As each roof panel is set into place, insert a lining punch through the hole in the rib at the bottom
of each roof panel. Temporarily clamp the two roof panels together with vise grips so that the
punch can be removed and a 5/16 x 3/4 bolt inserted and hand tightened. Continued
installation of roof panels as described in preceding steps.
All bins are equipped with one manhole and a roof ladder as standard. Extra manholes should be
spaced evenly around the bin.
When the last roof panel is placed, it will have to be interlocked by using a rubber mallet.
Starting at the top and working down, tap the vertical rib until it is sealed to the other panel.
Align roof panel holes and insert 5/16 x 3/4 bolts in the same manner as previously described.

E. Roof Vents
A. Goose Neck Vent Installation
1. Refer to the bulletin that comes with the vent for installation procedures
2. Locate Goose Neck Vent on the desired roof sheet. Typically slide Goose Neck Vent up the
roof sheet (Toward the small end) until the corners of the base intersect the roof sheet ribs.
3. Using the base as a template, mark and drill the 11/32 diameter mounting holes.
4. Apply (2) two beads of butyl sealant or mastic sealant as shown, between the Goose Neck
Vent base and roof sheet. Leave a 1 gap at the lower side of the outside bead.
5. Assemble Goose Neck Vent to roof sheet using 5/16 x 3/4 hex bin bolts and nuts. Tighten
all bolts and check sealant along upper end of Goose Neck vent base for any gaps or pockets.
Apply extra sealant as required.
6. Peen up edge on inside of Goose Neck Vent to make a water tight seal. The lip should be
approximately 1 all the way around.
Page 54
2. Locate the roof vent assembly on the roof panel (over the manhole) by aligning the holes in
the clips with the corresponding holes in the lower end of the roof panel.
3. Mark the outline of the roof vent with a marking pencil so that the vent can be returned to the
same position after the caulking is applied.
4. Remove the vent from the roof panel, turn upside down, and apply caulking to the mounting
surface of the sides and top.
5. At this time, install and tighten three 5/16 x 3/4 bin bolts and nuts in the holes directly
above and below the manhole (in the roof panel to prevent leakage).
6. Locate the roof vent on the roof panel in its original position and attach with the #14 x 3/4
self-drilling screws provided. If a screw gun is not available, use the holes in the vent as a
guide and drill 3/8 holes through the vent and roof panel, and attach with 5/16 x 3/4 bin
bolts and nuts.
7. Install 5/16 x 3/4 bin bolts and nuts in the clips and bottom of screen as shown in detail on
previous page.
8. Tighten all bolts securely.
NOTE: Roofs with structural beams may require field installation of angles between beams at
both top and bottom of manhole opening if 20 PSF or 30 PSF live loading is required.

(9) Tighten bolts in horizontal seams between 2nd and 3rd ring beginning at center of sheet
and working both ways.
(10) Add ladder sections as required (See separate Ladder Manual)
(11) Repeat steps 1 thru 10 to add 4th ring and each additional ring. Proper bolting
sequence must be followed at all times to assure proper assembly.
NOTE: Use 7/16x1 1/4 bin bolts at bottom sidelap of transition sheets. Use 5/16x3/4 bin
bolts at the top sidelap at vertical seams of transition sheet.
NOTE: All bins have all 2 ring bottom stiffeners at the bottom, a 1 ring stiffener must be
placed at every other stiffener line in the 3rd ring.

(2) Bolt anchor brackets to 2-ring bottom stiffeners. DO NOT fully tighten, only finger
tighten at this time.
(3) After the bottom ring is attached, lower the bin carefully, placing all anchor brackets
over the anchor bolts.
(4) When full weight of the bin is on the concrete, shim the anchors as necessary by
sliding shim plates between the concrete and anchor bracket. All anchors must be
bearing upon the concrete or shimmed so that full bearing of the anchor is developed.
NOTE: Anchors placed over aeration trenches must be supported from the bottom of the
trench.
After all anchors brackets are shimmed snuggly, place two square washers over the
anchor bolt and tighten.
Plastic cement or tar sealant should be applied from inside the bin to seal the bottom ring
to concrete. (NOTE: Sealant is not furnished by Chief Industries, INC.)
Page 83
Bin Stiffener anchors allow up to 3 anchor bolts to be used at each anchor location. There are (2)
1 diameter and (1) 1-1/2 diameter holes in each Bin Stiffener Anchor.
There are several different combinations that Chief Industries Recommends to anchor the bin to
the foundation.
1. One 1-1/4 x 12 anchor bolt may be used in the 1-1/2 diameter hole, if this is done the
anchor bolt must be pre set in the concrete
2. Two 3/4 x 12 anchor bolts may be used in the two 1 diameter holes. If this is done, at least
one of the two anchor bolts must be pre set in the concrete the second may be drilled in. (It is
recommended that both anchor bolts are pre-set.)
If anchor bolts are not pre set as stated above, and the anchor bolt radius is not held, the bins
warranty may be nullified.
Larger anchor bolts or the use of all three anchor bolts may be required if seismic conditions or
high wind loads exist. Chief Industries should be consulted for proper anchor bolts to be used.
All anchor bolts must project a minimum of 2 above the concrete floor.
All anchor bolts, nuts and washers shall conform to ASTM A307 (specification for carbon steel
threaded standard fasteners) unless otherwise noted. Anchor bolts, nuts and washers are not
provided by Chief Industries, Inc.
IMPORTANT: If expansion type anchor bolts are used to replace damaged anchor
bolts, the bolt radius circle must be checked at replacement locations so that the bin is
round when anchored. Chief Industries recommends using wedge anchors that meet
10,000 LB Pull-Out and 7,500 LB shear criteria.

F. Transition Stiffeners
Aeration Trough Transition Stiffener Installations (for flush-floor aeration systems with two or
more fans)
(1) The formed concrete dimensions and the anchor bolt placement are important for the correct
installation of the transition stiffeners. When forming the concrete, the aeration troughs
should be located as specified in Chiefs aeration layout. The anchor bolt locations for the bin
need to be oriented to make sure that the number of anchors over the aeration trough is
minimized. When installing the anchor bolts, the bolt radius and bolt chord must be correct
and they must also be placed according to the details below.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Do NOT install the anchor bolts inside the aeration trench at this
time.
2 Stiffener/Sheet Bins
3 Stiffener/Sheet Bins
(2) When the bin is erected and located correctly (as illustrated above), insert the transition in the
aeration trough. Using the hole in the anchor bracket as a guide, drill a 3/4 hole through the
top of the transition. Slide the transition stiffener inside the transition and line it up with the
previously drilled hole. Loosely install the 5/8 x 1-1/2 A325 bolt. Rotate the transition
stiffener body so that it is centered under the bin wall anchor. See installation detail that
follows.
(3) The transition stiffener must be attached to the foundation with two (2) 5/8 x 6 expansiontype anchor bolts. The holes for these anchor bolts should now be located. With an acetylene
torch, cut two holes in the bottom of the transition using the holes in the transition stiffener
base plate as guides. (This would mark the location of the anchor bolts in the concrete as
well.)
(4) Remove the transition stiffener and the transition.

(5) Repeat step 2 through 3 until four more brackets have been installed.
(6) Slide another connector into the end of the previously installed ring segment. Slide the next
ring segment through the four brackets and butt it firmly against the previous segment.
(7)
Repeat steps 5 and 6 until only one ring segment remains to be installed. Installing the
final ring segment requires special procedures.
