May 1999 March 2001 (1 year 11 months)New Delhi Area, India
Operations Director
VSL India Private Limited
Experience
Leading the project management team of precasting and segment erection work of Jamal
Abdul Nasser Street Project. A project worth 1.2 billion USD
Project consists of various elevated road works; with main line consisting of 8 lanes of 10
km, link roads of 4 to 6 lanes of 1km,ramps for interchanges with 1 to 3 lanes of 11km,
service roads mostly of 6 lanes underneath viaducts of 9km including 3 interchanges and
9 roundabouts.
The main line segmental viaduct will be formed from twin independent single cell boxex
interconnected by common in-situ diaphragms at pier locations.
The projects consisted of Construction of Elevated road and Metro Viaduct consisting of
Single box, with or without cantilever arm by segmental construction.
Worked in the capacity of Construction Manager for full set up of casting yard including
all facilities and successful production of approx. 1500 Nos. of precast segments for both
metro as well as dedicated bus corridor (4 lane and 5 lane segments) with their
cantilever arms as separate precast element. The project saw double layer segment
erection for the first time in India (Metro viaduct at top and elevated bus corridor at lower
level).
Manager(Projects) - Erection/Launching
Gammon India Ltd
Worked in the capacity of Manager (Projects) for the Construction of future land mark of
Delhi, "The Signature Bridge".
Responsibilities involved were construction of main bridge & its approach / 3 span
continuous unit by segmental construction technique by using mechanized launching
girders as well as underslung system.
Bridge Engineer
Parsons
Worked in the capacity of section in-charge for construction of Red and Green line viaduct
for Dubai metro rail project. Project included launching of two and three span viaduct as
well as simply supported spans by using mechanized launching girders, Erection of
Balanced Cantilever segmental bridges by using mobile lifting frames, Erection of precast
pier caps etc.
Worked in the capacity of Erection Engineer for "Allahabad By pass Bridge Project" - A
twin river bridge of 1km each, over river Ganga; erected by balanced cantilever method
with varying segment depths. The project was part of National Highway-2 Golden
Quadrilateral corridor from New Delhi to Kolkata.
Worked in the capacity of Shift In-charge at the precast yard for Delhi Metro Project. Full
setup of Casting yard and successful completion of over 3000 segments. Casting of
world's first U shaped segment 'n Full destructive load test of span.
The building of the two-track metro rail bridge across Yamuna exemplifies the expertise, planning
and attitudinal excellence that has gone into the making of the Shahdara-Tis Hazari section of the
Delhi
Metro
Rail
Network.
The state-of-the-art 553 metres long continuous, single pre-stressed box girder, for two tracks
across the river Yamuna, was completed in 2001 in a period of just 30 months by using,
Incremental Launching a special technique, used prior to this only in the construction of the
Panvel Viaduct of the Knokan Railways.
The technique involves the construction of the bridge in segments, as opposed to constructing it in
irregular parts. The entire segment is first cast on a casting bed and then pulled over the pillars of
the bridge by jacking. The segments were cast, prestressed and launched in increments of 23.20
metre (halfspan) each time. Total of twenty five segments were cast and launched at an average
cycle time of 12 days per segment and a total weight of 15,000 metric tons was pushed by the two
400 ton capacity synchronized hydraulic jacks during final launching. The construction technique is
ideal for busy cities because it allows construction without any major disruption of traffic. Since the
bridge is advanced by sections, unlike conventionally built bridges, there are no joints and this has
also ensured a smoother bump-free journey for commuters.
The bridge is founded on pile foundation for P16 and abutment, and on 40 metre deep
wellfoundation for rest of the piers. Air-jetting, water-jetting and other modern methods like Jackdown were used for sinking the foundations of the one metre thick and ten metre wide RCC wells.
Since the length of the bridge kept moving forward section by section during construction, the
Delhi Metro Yamuna Bridge has earned for itself the epithet, moving bridge.
The Box Subways
The making of the rail and metro corridors have provided a challenging ground for setting
innovative benchmarks in the field of civil engineering. This includes the construction of two Box
Tunnel Subways for allowing cars, scooters, light vehicles and pedestrians to pass through safely
near the Welcome and Seelampur Metro Stations. The 3 metres high, 6 metres horizontal and 30
metres long boxes were inserted below the existing Northern Railway tracks without disturbing the
train movement of Northern Railway. This astonishing feat was achieved in a record number of 22
days in the case of the Seelampur Box Tunnel.
