Deploying Virtual Appliance

The Virtual Appliance has two disks: the first one (20 GB) contains the Linux OS with NAKIVO Backup & Replication,
and the second one (500 GB) is used as a backup repository. If you deploy the Virtual Appliance disks using the Thin
Provision option, then the disks will not reserve space on your datastore and will only consume space when actual
data (such as your backups) is written to disks.
To deploy the Virtual Appliance, follow the steps below:
1. Log in to vSphere client and choose Deploy OVF Template from the File menu:

2. On the Source step, click Browse, locate and select the file with the template, and click Next:

3. On the OVF Template Details step, review the template details and click Next:

4. On the End User License Agreement step, read the license agreement. If you agree to its terms, click Accept
and then click Next:

5. On the Name and Location step, specify a name and location for the Virtual Appliance and click Next.

6. On the Host / Cluster step, select a host or cluster where you would like to deploy the Virtual Appliance and
click Next.

7. On the Resource Pool step, select the resource pool within which you would like to deploy the Virtual
Appliance and click Next.

8. On the Storage step, select a datastore where you would like to keep the Virtual Appliance disk and click
Next.

9. On the Disk Format step, choose a disk format for the Virtual Appliance, the Thin Provision option is
recommended. Click Next.

10. Network Mapping step, select a network to which the Virtual Appliance will be connected. Choosing a
network with DHCP and Internet access is recommended. Click Next.

11. On the Ready to Complete step, review the summary of the setups you have configured and select the Power
on after deployment option. Click Finish to complete the deployment.

After the Virtual Appliance is deployed, you may need to configure a static IP address for it (you can skip this step in
case DHCP is enabled in the network to which Virtual Appliance is connected).

Configuring Virtual Appliance

Configuring Network Settings
To configure networking on the Virtual Appliance, follow the steps below:
1. Open the Virtual Appliance console.
2. On the main menu, select the Network Settings option and press Enter.
3. To change the Virtual Appliance hostname, select the Hostname option, press Enter, type a new hostname,
and press Enter again.
4. To configure a network card, select it and press Enter. Press Enter to switch between DHCP and manual
network settings. If you set the DHCP option to disabled, you can manually set up network settings by
selecting an option, pressing Enter, typing a new value, and pressing Enter again.

Increasing Backup Repository Size

To increase the size of the backup repository on the virtual appliance, follow the steps below:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Attach a new disk to the Virtual Appliance.

Open the Virtual Appliance console. On the main menu, select the Backup storage option and press Enter.
Refresh the list of disks by pressing F5.
Select the disk that you have created and press Enter. Press Enter again to confirm the procedure. The disk is
formatted and added to the backup repository on the Virtual Appliance.

Removing the Disk with Backup Repository

The Virtual Appliance comes with a 500 GB disk on which a Backup Repository is created. If you have deployed the
Virtual Appliance disks using the Thin Provision option, then the disk does not consume 500 GB of space on your
datastore only the space occupied by VM backups is consumed.
If you still want to delete the 500GB disk after you have deployed the Virtual Appliance, follow the steps below:
1. Log into NAKIVO Backup & Replication.
2. Go to the Configuration > Backup repositories tab.
3. Click the Onboard repository, then choose Remove from the Manage menu:

Open the vSphere client and launch the console of the Virtual Appliance.
In the Virtual Appliance interface, select the Exit to system console option and press Enter.
Type in login and password (default are root/root).
Run the following command to unmount the volume on which the Backup Repository is located:
umount /opt/nakivo/repository

9. Edit the configuration file by running the following command:

nano /etc/fstab

10. In the editor, delete the line:

dev/mapper/Volume_Group_Backup_Repository_500GB/Logical_Volume_Backup_Repository_500G
B /opt/nakivo ext4 defaults 0 2

11. Save changes by pressing Ctrl and o, and then pressing Enter.
12. Exit the editor by pressing Ctrl and x.
