The spherical bearing with PTFE sliding discs, in accordance

with EN 1337, facilitates large rotations and medium to large
loads.

Principle

Cross-section of spherical bearing

mageba RESTONSPHERICAL bearings are designed to

transmit vertical forces while permitting large rotations by
means of matching rounded upper and lower parts.
Longitudinal and transverse movements of the
superstructure can be facilitated as appropriate by a flat
sliding interface between the top of the rounded element
and a sliding plate, or alternatively, side-mounted guide
bars can be provided to transmit horizontal forces.

2 Product Features

The bearing and how it works

Application of silicone grease to PTFE

Free rotation is facilitated by the concave lower element, which is lined with a
PTFE sliding disc. A convex rounded counterpart forms the other half of the
sliding pairing, and with its polished hard chrome (or nickel) surface, lies
almost frictionless on top of the concave lower element.
In the case of a guided sliding or a free sliding bearing, a PTFE sliding disc is
provided on top of the rounded element. This, in conjunction with an upper
sliding plate, permits the bridge to move in either the specified direction (as
limited by guide bars) or freely. In order to keep frictional resistance to a
minimum, a polished austenitic stainless steel sheet is applied to the underside
of the sliding plate

Materials and quality control

The principal components of the spherical bearing and materials used:
Steel components: Grade S355
PTFE: high quality certified, white PTFE with grease pockets
Sliding plate: welded austenitic stainless steel sheet
Coating of rounded part: hard chrome or nickel
Lubricant: high quality certified silicone grease

Corrosion protection
The following standard corrosion protection is used for all exposed steel
components:
SA 3 sandblasting
50m zinc metal spray galvanising
Two top coats, each 40m
Alternative corrosion protection can be provided upon request

Spray galvanising

Testing and approvals

RESTONSPHERICAL bearings are technically approved. Certification of
approval (Z-16.4-314) by the Deutsche Institut fr Bautechnik in Berlin is
available upon request.

Additional equipment
All mageba RESTONSPHERICAL bearings are equipped with a type plate
(containing key information) as standard.
Guided sliding and free sliding spherical bearings can be equipped with an
optional movement scale.
Upon request spherical bearings can be fitted with dust protection or a bellows
(folded sheet) (as prescribed by the German Approval).
Optional movement scale

Area of application
RESTONSPHERICAL bearings are particularly suitable for:
Bridges requiring high degree of rotation at supports
Medium to high loads
Bridges in extremely cold locations (temperatures below -20 C)

Fixed Bearing Type KF 3

Fixed spherical bearings Type KF

RESTONSPHERICAL Type KF (fixed) bearings allow free rotation and the
transmission of horizontal forces from any direction.
By placing movement prevention bars on the upper support plate, the fixed
bearing can transmit both longitudinal and transverse horizontal forces from
the upper to the lower support structure.
In order to keep the spherical part free of horizontal forces, fixed bearings are
also provided with an additional sliding surface between the rounded element
and the upper plate.

Loads and dimensions

The table is based on a permissible
eccentric pressure of 32 N/mm2
(C35 concrete quality) on the connecting
concrete.
The bearing dimensions given in the table
are valid for:
Vmin = 0.5*Vmax
HRes, max = 0.1*Vmax
Angle of rotation tan = 0.01
Dimensions and weights for different
permissible pressure on the concrete and
extraordinary loading conditions can be
calculated upon request.

4 Guided Sliding Bearing Type KE

Guided sliding spherical bearings Type KE

RESTONSPHERICAL Type KE (guided sliding) bearings allow the free
rotation of the superstructure as well as guided sliding movement in one
direction.
The guided sliding bearing can transmit horizontal forces from the upper to
lower support structure via guide bars on the sliding plate.
In order to keep the frictional resistance during movement to a minimum, the
guide bars also use materials suitable for sliding.

Free Sliding Bearing Type KA 5

Free sliding spherical bearings Type KA

RESTONSPHERICAL Type KA (free sliding) bearings enable the free
rotation of the superstructure as well as free sliding movement.
Since this design can accommodate neither stop units nor guide bars, the free
sliding bearing is unable to transmit horizontal forces.

6 Assembly and Installation

Factory assembly and transportation

The spherical bearings are assembled as a whole in the factory, adjusted to
the pre-setting values, labelled and then packed ready for transportation.

Installation

Welding in the factory

When the bearing is installed the parallelism of the support plates must be
checked, as well as the pre-setting values and the mounting direction /
location.
After the successful installation of the bearing, transportation fittings must be
removed immediately to avoid damage to the bearing.
Spherical bearings should only be installed under the guidance of suitably
trained professionals.
Detailed assembly and installation instructions can be provided upon request.

Maintenance
mageba spherical bearings are essentially maintenance free. Therefore, it is
sufficient for checks to be carried out during the regular bridge inspections.
Instructions for Inspections are available upon request.
The spherical bearing has been designed in such a way that all significant
parts can be exchanged as necessary without damaging the adjacent parts of
the bridge.
External supervision and control

The customer must ensure that there is free access to the bearing and also
sufficient space to place hydraulic jacks in order to lift the bridge structure.

Testing
Upon request vertical, horizontal and friction tests can be carried out on the
spherical bearing.
mageba has purpose-built its own testing facility for bridge bearings. It can
apply vertical force of up to 100,000 kN, making it the largest test rig in the
world.
Bearing testing facility

Proof of quality
RESTONSPHERICAL bearings have proven themselves under heavy traffic
conditions to be extremely durable. For four decades they have been used
successfully throughout the world.
Qualified staff and the most up-to-date manufacturing facilities as well as
consistent quality control procedures are the fundamental ingredients that
ensure the high quality standards of mageba products.
mageba has been ISO 9001-2000 and EN 729-2 certified since 1991, and is
also certified in accordance with DIN 18800-7.

Quotations and Orders 7

Requests for quotations

Wherever possible when making a quote request, the most important design
criteria of the bearing should be submitted, thus allowing us to give you the
ideal choice of bearings and ensure best value for money.

Quotations
An indicative quote can be made based on the classification and number of
bearings needed. For a more precise quotation we would require the following
information:
Maximum, minimum and permanent vertical loads (with reference to the
relevant standard (DIN, EN, BS))
Horizontal force on the bridge in both longitudinal and transverse directions
Most adverse load combination of maximum horizontal force and minimum
vertical load
Movement of the bridge in longitudinal and transverse directions
Rotation of the bridge in longitudinal and transverse directions
Need for anchor plates, dust protection, etc.
Concrete quality of the columns, abutments and superstructure
General structural details (concrete or steel bridge, space available for the
bridge bearings etc.)
An exact list of the necessary information is defined in the new European
Bearing Standard, EN1337, Part 1. You can find a checklist based on this
Standard, outlining the necessary information, on our website
www.mageba.ch.

Spherical bearings in production

Placing of orders
In addition to the information already supplied, the following details are also
necessary when placing an order:
Layout drawing of the structure
Breakdown of all movements
Pre-setting values
Work begins once the customer has approved and returned the documents
confirming the pre-setting values.
Delivery time is kept to a minimum thanks to an efficient order processing
system and modern manufacturing methods.
