La traduction anglaise
de la Grammaire de Vastin Lespy
mots de notre belle langue ainsi dsigne surtout par ceux qui la
connaissent peu. Je crois que les choses nont pas chang depuis
cent ans. Ce que je sais de lapprentissage dune langue trangre
me fait dire que ce que lamateur de langues souhaite, cest de savoir des mots, surtout des noms, et parmi ceux-ci, des noms de choses concrtes. Donc, prfrence donne au vocabulaire, alors que savoir
une langue, cest matriser sa syntaxe. Par parenthse, ce qui distingue aujourdhui encore les vrais Barnais , des autres qui nont
pas assimil la langue la mamelle, cest que la langue quils parlent est aise et franche dallure, mme si le lexique se rapportant
certains domaines est pauvre et encombr de gallicismes.
Il faut dire ici que Molyneux fait du vocabulaire barnais une observation pertinente et fine. Les quivalents anglais quil donne sont
honntes et prcis ; ils montrent souvent de loriginalit et une comprhension en profondeur. Le pittoresque de nos tournures ne lui a
pas chapp. La partie anglais-barnais en fait parfois une utilisation savoureuse et pleine de pittoresque. Pour moi, angliciste dont la
langue maternelle est le barnais, la lecture du Vocabulaire de
Molyneux est une promenade linguistique instructive et fort agrable, amusante et parfois attendrissante. Certes, on a loccasion, de
temps en temps, dy sourire dune bourde bien excusable dans un
ensemble intelligent. Ce sont presque toujours des erreurs de manipulation, fausses lectures, confusions, lorsque langlais ne recouvre
pas exactement le barnais ou le franais de la traduction quen
donne Lespy. Je citerai en exemple le mot barnais ter, bien connu
des leveurs : en franais vairon , parasite des bovins dont la larve
provoque une tumeur et une perforation de la peau. Lespy dit dans
sa dfinition : le ver qui troue les cuirs . Molyneux a cru quil sagissait
du cuir des livres, do la traduction quil en donne : bookworm, littralement ver des livres et au sens figur rat de bibliothque .
Autre exemple : le patronyme Darrenougu, mot mot derrire-lenoyer , est devenu la dernire Noix (the last nut). Ailleurs cest
la bime qui devient chvre (she-goat). On peut citer aussi pi de
mas confondu avec balle des crales (lou cabelh de milhoc e
lou poub). Il est vrai que, pour un Anglais, le mas est une plante
exotique ! II arrive parfois que le typographe lise mal les notes manuscrites. Ainsi langlais b-o-i-l (furoncle) est traduit par boucherie . En fait, il sagissait de bouchorle (ampoule) mot dans lequel
le o et le l avaient t pris pour e et i ! Quelques accents sont oublis,
ce qui fait quon ne distingue plus bouhade (souffle) de bouhad (soufflet).
Je maperois que je traite de plus en plus la traduction du livre de
Lespy comme un vocabulaire et non comme une grammaire. Sans doute
parce que le vocabulaire permet de passer facilement dune langue
lautre. Ce qui me fait penser que cest ce ct qui a d intresser au
premier chef les anglophones. la lecture de ce livre qumaillent
ces expressions idiomatiques qui pour lapprenti linguiste reprsentent un idal difficilement atteint, je nai pas pu mempcher de songer quil est bien dommage que Molyneux nait pas entrepris une vraie
mthode dapprentissage, la rfrence ici tant la Mthode Assimil avec lAnglais sans peine qui a permis des gnrations
daborder la langue de Shakespeare par la phrase lgendaire : My
tailor is rich . Cette phrase fait toujours rire, mais la mthode mar-
