FOREWORD
This Indian Standard ( First Revision ) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the
draft finalized by the Ores and Raw Materials Sectional Committee had been approved by the
Metallurgical Engineering Division Council.
This standard was first published in 1982. In light of the experience gained since the time of its first
publication, it was felt necessary to make certain changes. In this revision, Grade 2 have been deleted
and the requirements of the alkali content for iron making grade has been included.
SiOz content
has been restricted to 1 percent in Grade 1. Limits of other constituents and the preferred size ranges
have also been modified, in this revision.
Limestone is used extensively in primary steel plants as flux for the production of iron in blast
furnace.
Lime is also used in open hearth and other processes for the production of steel. This
standard would be helpful for procuring standard limestone to be used in steel plant as flux.
For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of-this standard is complied with, the
final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in
accordance with IS 2 : 1960 Rules for rounding off numerical values ( revised ). The number of
significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in
this standard.

( Item 7 )
GUIDELINES FOR DETERMINATION OF DECREPITATION INDEX OF LIMESTONE
A-l 15 kg of limestone of size between 20-30 mm
is taken in thin walled refractory container and
introduced in an electric furnace at I 000C. Oxidizing atmosphere is maintained in the furnace
during the heating cycle. The material is taken
out of the furnace after 25 hr and cooled down

to room temperature and then put in solid bottom

sieve pan and shaken for 10 minutes in a sieve
shaker. The material is then screened through
10 mm sieve. Percentage of the fraction below
10 mm is calculated and reported as decrepitation
index.

Standard Mark
The use of the Standard Mark is governed by the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards
1986 and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder.
The Standard Mark on products
covered by an Indian Standard conveys the assurance that they have been produced to comply with
the requirements of that standard under a well defined system of inspection, testing and quality
control which is devised and supervised by BIS and operated by the producer.
Standard marked
products are also continuously checked by BIS for conformity to that standard as a further safeguard. Details of conditions under which a licence for the use of the Standard Mark may be granted
to manufacturers or producers may be obtained from the Bureau of Indian Standards.
