About 3000 brethren gathered in Aznar Col

77th

National

of

the

Churches

of Christ in the Philippines. People came

from all over the Philippines.

In many respects the convention was like

the NACC, with good preaching, singing,
workshops, and fellowship.
In each main
session there were two messages, usually
one in English followed by one in one of

the dialects (Tagalog, Cebuano, Ilokano,

Ilongo, et al). There was much good spe
cial music, several individuals and/or
groups singing in each session. Many tal
ented musicians are among our brethren in
the Philippines!
My personal participation included a work
shop, leading the singing at one session,

and taking nearly 400 pictures in my capa

city as Official Photographer.
The fellowship was great!
I saw many
brethren, both Tilipino and American, whom
I remembered from earlier visits.

I hope to be back in the Philippines, af

ter my furlough, in time to attend the
78th convention next year in Pila, Laguna.

Dear Brother Bill:

Mrs. Weber sent along your letter of June 10 for me to answer.

Yes, I am indeed planning a furlough.

November through April, next.

It will be a nominal six months of furlough,

That is, November I986 thru April 1987,

I will leave

here about 31 October and spend three weeks of November in Chiangmai, Thailand, teach
ing in Chiangmai Bible Institute, where I once served#

I will arrive home to the

, Seattle/Portland area just in time for Thanksgiving. Beginning abot 8 December, I will
be "on the scene" at West Seattle Christian Church. My availability for speaking
dates had best be limited to the January-March 198? time period. I do not know just
when I will return to Philippines, except that if possible I want to be back here by

the time of the 78th National Convention.

That date has not been set; it will probably

be in April. If that date is not too early in April, I will try to come back in time
for it. If not, then I will be in Seattle for most of April. But, I think I can be
sure of the January-March time period.

On my earlier furloughs I did not have a lot of speaking dates.

That is due, in part,

because I receive regular support from just four congregations, all within five hours
of driving from WSCC. But, I do try to speak where I am invited.

I wish I could be there for the BIG convention. But, Ray and Imogene Carlson plan to
be there. They are taking siK^ months of furlough now, partly because they want to
be Part of that grand occasion.

We have just now completed the second week of the first semester of our I986-87 school

year in Cebu Bible Seminary. It is good to be back with the students; the campus is
sort of lonely during the sumrrer break. We have kO students, including 13 new ones.

That IS a slight increase over last year.

As usual, many of the students are in need

/ of financial help while they are here. About $20 per month will keep a student in food
:f\ Cor, rather, keep food in him/her!). I am continuing my "extra curricular" activity of
coaching two CBS male quartetslots of fun!

I am hopeful that propagation conditions will be good during the convention. The
Christian Amateur Radio Fellowship hopes to have a station in operation and to make
contact with some of us at that time. I have a regular schedule of every day

from 22^0 to 22^^ GMT (late afternoon in Indy) on 1^.235 MHz. Unfortunately! third
party operation IS not allowed between USA and the Philippines, meaning that I will be
to talk only to other ham radio operators. My call is KD7ZA/DU7, Others can

course, listen in while a ham is talking to me.

I pray that God will continue to richly bless you as you continue to serve Him.

A Busy Summer
Between the end of our 1985-86 school year in March and the begin
ning of our 1986-87 school year in June, I had a very busy active summer.
At the 36th Commencement Exercises of Cebu Bible Seminary we awarded degrees to four: Lydia Ablen, Eliezer

Mayaki, Crispin Millendez, and Mrs. Eileen Debault. The first three were regular CBS students who had completed
their work with us. Mrs. Debault was a student here while her husband Delmar taught for a semester. We anticipate
reports of good work accomplished by all of these former students.
The Annual Missionary Retreat with many of our brotherhood missionaries was, as usual, a great time of

fellowship and sharing. The retreat was hosted this year by Charles and Florence Littell and others of their
Ambassadors for Christ team in Davao City.

The Second Anniversary Celebration of the Church of Christ in Matlang, Leyte, was on the last week-end of
March and brought together brethren from other congregations as well as the local brethren. It was my privilege to
preach for the Lord's Day morning service. Two responded to the invitation and were immediately immersed into
Christ.

The 77th National Convention of the Churches of Christ in the Philippines in Aznar Coliseum here in Cebu City
10-13 April was the BIGevent for our brethren in Cebu. This was the first time in its history that the convention was
not on the island of Luzon. The main sessions included manyspecial music selections followed bytwomessagesthe
first usually by one of the Americans in English and then a message by one of the Filipino brethren in one of the
dialects. There were also many workshops, led by both Filipinoand American brethren, both men and women. My
participation consisted of leading the singing at a main session, leading a workshop, and taking nearly 400 pictures in
my capacity as Official Photographer. I was blessed in seeing the Seekers and the Sowers, the CBS male quartets
which I coach, sing separately and together as a double quartet.

Immediately following the convention was two weeks of Youth Camp and Seminar sponsored by SPKK.K
(Samahang Pangkalahatang Kapisanan ng mga Kabataang Kristiyano) and held on the CBS campus. I taught two
courses.

- My 24-28 April trip to Ubay, Bohol, with the Sowers Quartet was myfirst-visit to that island, lyingdirectly^ast of
Cebu. We were with Nemesio Carbonilla and the new workthere. The quartet fellows taught classes and I spoke for an
afternoon seaside Feeding Program. We participated in the same way on the Lord's Day morning.
5-12 May was a busy week on the island of Negros. First was the Revival Camp in Magsaysay. The program
included classes during the dayand evangelistic meetings intheevenings. Theevening programconsisted ofa segment
of the movie "Jesus," some special music and preaching, and then a second segment of the movie. I preached thefirst
night and Paul Wilson preached the second night. Following Paul's message nine responded to the invitation. The
Sowers Quartet sang special music and the invitation song. On Saturday morning, beginning at six, was the
Terry Knippers/ Amparo Millendez wedding. Terry is a young man from Oklahoma who spent several months in
construction/repair/maintenance work on the CBS campus and on a new church building in Dumaguete City.
Amparo is a CBS graduate of several years ago. I was the photographer for the wedding. The Sowerssang"I Want a
Girl" in barbershop harmony.

We were with the church in Bacolod City on the Lord's Dayfollowing the camp and wedding. I preached and the
quartet sang several times. We had barely enough time to wash clothes and repack before leaving for
Three Weddings in Candelaria, Leyte. Three young couples in the church in Candelaria scheduled their weddings
for the same week, 13-19 May. The Sowers and I went to attend the weddings and to participate in some evening
evangelistic services. Two were immersed into Christone of the new husbands and a brother of another of the new
husbands.

The Seekers Quartet and I were on the program for the
Youth Action Fellowship in Libuton, Mindanao. This was a time of good fellowship with the Ambassadors for
Christ team. I had a couple of lecture series and preached once. The Seekers sang several times and, by their presence,
promoted Cebu Bible Seminary.
Ham radio has been a good adjunct to my life here. 1have h^d several good ragchey^ with Jim Penney.J^HGZ. of
West Seattle Christian Church, and with Jim Aguirre, WB7DHC, of Issaquah Christian Church. I have a daily
schedule: 2230 - 2245 GMT on 14.235 MHz and will be glad to hear from anyone. My call is KD7ZA/DU7.
Furlough plans. I plan to leave Cebu early Monday 27 October, spend three weeks teaching in Chiangmai Bible
Institute, and arrive in Seattle on Tuesday 25 November. My return to the Philippines is tentatively set for Monday 20
April 1987. 1 will be available for speaking dates during January, February, and March. For a speaking date, please
communicate with Russ Galbreath at West Seattle Christian Church.

Physical Property Needs of Cebu Bible Seminary. There are a number of items which the CBS campus needs or
which would greatly aid in the teaching program of CBS.
. . . Wall around the CBS campus, needed for security of students and property. About $3,000. Top priority item.
. . . Typewriters for teaching typing. 2 needed at $250 each.
. . . Overhead fans. 10 could be used at $100 each.

. . . Overhead projectors. 3 at $150 each.

. . . Video System. Color TV and VCR will cost about $1,100 here.
. . . Regular income for CBS. Funds are needed for many improvements and/or repairs, as well as the regular
expenses of operating CBS.
. . . Regular support for individual students. $25 each month will keep a student here at CBS.
We are in the computer age! I have concluded that having a computer will be a big help in my work. A word
processing program will expedite work such as I am doing in writing this ROW. A Bible text/concordance program
will speed up study and lesson/sermon preparation. A computer will be usable as a "lab" for helping CBS students

learn computer skills. $2,000 will buy an IBM-compatible computer with monitor, disc drives, and printer.

Will you pray with me?...

Praising God for His greatness, love, and mercy;
Thanking Him for letting me live and work for Him here;
That the Philippines will remain a free country, and that President Aquino will be able to lead the country
into a new era of peace and prosperity;
That the Christian brethren here will remain strong in their faith;
That funds will become available for the physical property needs listed above;
That funds will become available for a computer;
That I will be God's man and that 1 will have patience to relate to the people here.
Slide/Cassette Set now avilable. 28 minutes, 95 slides. If you would like to use this presentation, please contact
West Seattle Christian Church or Mission services.

Thank you, each one, for your interest, love, concern, prayer, and support for me and my work here in Cebu,
Philippines.

THE CBS LIBRARY

One of the essential parts of any

institution of higher learning is
a good library. Accrediting bodies
require a good library before
granting approval of a school. The
