Term: Spring 2016
Description: Data organization, introduction to probability
models,
interval
estimation,
tests
of
hypotheses,
linear
regression,
one-way
analysis of variance, and chi-squared tests.
Prerequisites: MATH 1306 with a grade of C or higher
Time/Day class meets: 1:00 1:50 pm, MWF
Classroom: 242 Wells
Course Objectives:
1) Understand how to use appropriate graphical and
numerical techniques to explore data, characterize
patterns, and describe departures from patterns.
2) Understand concepts and applications of probability.
3) Understand the relationships among probability
theory, sampling, and statistical inference, and
how statistical inference is used in making and
evaluating predictions.
Program Student Learning Outcomes:
1) The student shall have significantly enhanced
understanding and practice in the analysis and
solution of advanced problems.
2) The student shall have all of the computational
device skills needed for the analysis and solution
of advanced mathematical problems.
3)
The
student
shall
attain
a
sophisticated
understanding and appreciation of the role of
mathematics in culture.

Delivery and Credit Hours:

This is a traditional, 3-credit hour course. Each

credit hour earned in this course requires at least 15
contact hours and a minimum of 30 hours of student
homework.
Textbooks
1) Elementary Statistics by Triola, 12th ed.
2) SPSS Manual by Ball (Download)
Course Procedure
Students are expected to do all the following:
*1. Read and study very carefully all assigned material.
2. Attend all classes from beginning to end.
3. Turn in all exercises completed and on time.
4. Take all exams at the scheduled times.
Academic Honesty
All homework, quizzes, and exams are to be individual
efforts. Cheating, plagiarism, or other forms of dishonesty
are unacceptable.
Such conduct will result in a grade of
zero (nonreplaceable) on the paper and may result in a
failing grade in the course. In addition, the UMHB policy
on academic integrity applies in this course.
Disabled Student Services and Accommodations
It is the students responsibility to request disability
accommodations. If you require an accommodation for a
disability, contact the Counseling, Testing & Health
Services, Mabee Student Center, Suite 303 as early as
possible in the term. The Course Catalog, Student Handbook
and UMHB website provide more details regarding the process
by which accommodation requests will be reviewed.
Assignments and Grading
The course homework assignment sheets are posted on
MyCourses.
Specific
homework
problems
and
reading
assignments will be given in each class.
Daily Grade: Homework/projects should be organized in a
folder. The average of homework grades will count as 20%
of your course grade.
Exams: There will be 4 tests and each will count as 15% of
your course grade. No make-up test will be given.

Final: Comprehensive.
This will count as 20% of your
course grade. (If it is to your advantage, your final exam
score can replace one test score.)

Attendance/Participation:
(The College of Humanities and Sciences stipulates that
attendance policies will be set at the departmental
level. The Department of Mathematics expects students to
attend all class sessions, as absenteeism is detrimental
to performance in the course. Additionally, faculty may
factor attendance into the final calculation of course
grades, given that the total amount of the grade based
on attendance does not exceed 20%.
The percentage of the course grade determined by
attendance in this course is 0%.)
The attendance grade in this course will be determined
as follows:
Attendance is mandatory in this class. If you have more
than five unexcused absences, your final grade will be
lowered by three points for each additional absence. An
unexcused tardy or early exit will constitute 1/2 of an
absence.
If you come to class late, it is your
responsibility to come to me and make sure you were not
marked absent. All excusable absences must be promptly
reported with appropriate documentation.
Also, a bonus
will
be
given
for
excellent
attendance/class
participation.
Use of Electronic Devices in Class:
In order to provide learning opportunities of the
highest quality, it is the policy of the mathematics
department to prohibit the use of electronic devices
such as, but not limited to, cell phones, iPods,
headsets, etc. These items must be turned off and kept
out of sight during class and during test-taking.
