Indian Veterinary Journal

Vol. 45, No. 8, August 1968

This issue commences with a lead article by Professor John Francis, Veterinary School, University of Queensland,
Brisbane, on Reflections on India and new breeds of cattle. The article has traced the growth of veterinary
institutions in India briefly and the research and developmental activities in the field of animal husbandry and
dairying. Discovery of the effect of arsenic in the treatment of Trypanosomiasis in cattle by Dr. Lingard was
specifically cited. The write up recalled the development of breeds such as Droughtmaster by crossing cattle of
Bos indicus and Bos taurus types in Australia. With an initial projection of producing dairy cattle with two to three
times the milking potential of the existing cattle, India could not make much headway because of continuous
preference for existing purebred bulls and exclusion of half- and three-quarters bred bulls from use for development
of breeds suitable for Indian conditions. Developmental efforts undertaken in England, Russia and Australia were
cited as models by which India could benefit very much. Introduction of Bos Taurus blood into Indian cattle and its
possible implications in disease control were also discussed. The need for a watch on Rinderpest and Foot and
Mouth was also emphasized. The need for high quality semen, facilities for use of liquid nitrogen and work on
artificial insemination was also underlined along with the long term impact on the health and nutritional status of
children in India.
A noble gesture of Hoechst Pharmaceuticals Limited, Bombay through their contribution of Rs. 500/towards IVJ Building Fund was gratefully recorded. There were Abstracts of papers published in reputed international
journals. Association News Items from Tripura and Jammu and Kashmir were recorded. Letters to the Editor
column contained subject matters on helminth parasites of desi pigs, cattle hypodermiasis treated with
Anthiomaline, dermatitis in elephants caused by Haematomyzus elephantis and partial labial agenesis in a Surti
buffalo. Book reviews were on the publications The Merck Veterinary Manual (O.H. Seigmund) 3rd Edition, 1967,
Merck and Company, Inc., USA Rathway, N.J. by Dr. M.S. Ganapathy, Veterinary Clinical Diagnosis (V.R. Kelly)
1967, Bailliere, Tindall and Cassell, London by Dr. M.S. Ganapathy, Fluid Balance in Canine Surgery (L.W. Hall),
1967, Bailliere, Tindall and Cassell, London by Dr. C.K.Velayudan Nair, Veterinary Bacteriology and Virology (I.A.

Bandicota malabarica in the transmission of rabies among the dogs, pathology of neoplasms smooth muscle
tumours in fowls, experimental infections with a prosthogonimid metacercaria in chicks, chemical sterilization of
stray dogs, physiological factors associated with gestation length in cows and buffaloes, protein metabolism of
adult sheep, central nervous system depressant action of some new imidazo- and triazolo (4,5-c) pyridine derivatives,
modification of Richmond formula for total solids determination in buffalo milk and performance of debeaked birds
