One charter school in Ohio is getting
the next wave of workforce ready for when
the oil industry does bounce back.
In August 2014, we reported on the
launch of the Utica Shale Academy, offering
courses focused on the oil and gas industry
to high school students in the state. This
issue includes an update on the schools
second year.
Enrollment has increased to 71 from
43 in the first year. School administrators
are exposing the students to what they
could face upon graduation by offering
hands-on projects and bringing in industry
experts to talk about their experiences.
Getting youths trained will help the
industry bounce back. Theyll be coming
up with innovative ways of doing things.
LOOKING AHEAD
Fresh ideas will only benefit the
industry and your business. Look at the

How has your business changed since
the downturn? What have you had to do

The Bakken region saw a huge boom and now is in the middle of a
downturn, like the other oil plays across the country. Housing, roads
and other industries fell by the wayside during the boom, and one
positive outcome of the downturn is a chance to get caught up!
Communities are transitioning, and it certainly wont be the end of oil
development in the region. When the tide turns, the Bakken will be
prepared for the upswing. gomcmag.com/featured

Things looked promising when Jeske established the business in 2005,
in Alberta. The journey from just surviving to outright
just as the oilfield boom was starting to heat up. Buoyed by assurances from
thriving wasnt easy, but owner Terry Jeske cites two

good drivers available, he says. We definitely were not getting the cream of
the crop.
The end result was, as Jeske puts it, a lot of sleepless nights. It was a
really shaky, tumultuous time. I had all those payments to make and little
revenue coming in, he says. Eventually I had to refinance the truck. I just
rode it out.
KEEPING THE FAITH
Why didnt Jeske just cut his losses by selling the truck and moving on?
I had so much invested in the business, and I thought if the boys took over,
theyd turn it around, he explains.
At the time, Braydon and Bryce, now 27 years old, had recently graduated
from high school. While Bryce was gaining valuable experience working for
a company that replaced water and sewer lines, Braydon was busy taking
business administration courses at a local technical institute. I asked them
to come on board, but they declined, Jeske says. But I kept pecking away
and pecking away and they finally agreed to do it.
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED
The boys did, indeed, lead a dramatic turnaround. Today the company
employs eight people and owns about $1.7 million worth of equipment,
including three vacuum trucks, a hydroexcavating truck and two steamcleaning units.

The boys also resolved one of the companys biggest problems at the
time: finding qualified workers. They brought in friends as well as other
workers they found through word-of-mouth referrals from friends.

markets, or theyre trying to get more
work by branching into things we already do, Braydon points out.
Many companies might see that as a bad thing, but Braydon disagrees.
Its good for the industry because it will weed out guys who undercut on
price and dont provide good-quality service, he says. And when oil prices
go back up, those companies will go back to serving the oil industry.
During the next three to five years, the Jeskes envision slow, evenly
paced growth. Another possibility: buying land and building a shop in or
near Edmonton. Right now we rent two different buildings a few blocks
apart, Braydon explains. But we need time to evaluate and better assess the
state of the economy going forward before expanding further into land and
equipment.
Jeske also plans to sell the company to the twins in the next five to
eight years, bringing to fruition what he first envisioned back in 2005. I was
hanging in there for my boys, he says of the companys turmoil-filled early
years. I knew that if I had a family-run business, I could eliminate all the
babysitting and headaches I was dealing with. GOMC

4 DAYS TO
MAKE YOUR
BUSINESS BETTER
The Water & Wastewater Equipment,
Treatment & Transport Show promises great
value and opportunity for your business
By Luke Laggis
ast year, the Water & Wastewater Equipment, Treatment & Transport
(WWETT) Show was spilling out of the exhibit hall at the Indiana
Convention Center. This year, its pouring into Lucas Oil Stadium.
It all gets started like it does every year, with the industrys best slate
of education courses. The show returns to its Wednesday-through-Saturday
schedule this year, so Education Day will be held Wednesday, Feb. 17.
A day in the classroom may not sound like the most exciting part of
your trip to Indianapolis, but it could be the most valuable. Presenters from
the industrys top manufacturers and associations will lead a wide variety of
classes, covering everything from septic myths to small-diameter pipe cleaning.
There are more than 50 classes on Wednesday alone.
When class lets out, the party gets started. Just take the short walk over to
Lucas Oil Stadium its connected to the convention center for the 2016
WWETT Show Kickoff Party. Relax, check out the exhibitor sponsor displays,
and enjoy a cold beverage and complimentary hors doeuvres while networking
with manufacturers and peers.
One of the main requests we receive from attendees year in and year out
is for more networking opportunities, says show coordinator Brad Bisnette.
18
GOMC
The Kickoff Party presents this opportunity and does so in a very unique,
convenient and exciting atmosphere.
The show really ramps up on Thursday when the exhibit hall opens. Every
year, products introduced at the show become important components in many
industry professionals toolboxes and equipment fleets. More than 9,400 people
representing 4,200 companies and 54 countries attended the 2015 show, with
597 exhibitors nearly spilling out of the exhibit hall.
This year, its going to be even bigger, encompassing all 560,000-plus
square feet of exhibit space at the Indiana Convention Center, in addition to
the classrooms, stadium and the Sagamore Ballroom.
Right now its a daily challenge trying to figure out how were going to fit

Invest in skills. Owners often worry they are training people to get better jobs elsewhere. Let employees know you are investing in them as recognition for their ability. Once they are more qualified, adjust wages to reflect their
new value. Gratitude is a short-lived motivation for staying in a job.
Pay market rates. Every small-business owner has lost an employee to
an offer I just couldnt match, but if it is happening regularly, you may be
out of touch with the wage scale. Those with ability dont have a problem
finding work. You may not be able to match the top of the market, but you
need to be in the ballpark.
Market internally. Employees can develop a grass is greener attitude
when they take for granted all the good things their employer offers. So make
a list of all the tangible and intangible benefits your company provides, and
schedule regular reminders of them for your workers.
The talent wars are here and will intensify in the years to come. Finding
and retaining the right people will depend on your ability to fight back with
the inherent advantages of a small business. GOMC

somebody realizes thats what they want to do, they really put their effort

In the classroom, the students who are in the gas and oil program are
learning what it takes to succeed in the workplace.
Theyll get their basic oil and gas safety training, then you can get
drilling training on how the well is drilled, the type of equipment used,
different types of casing sizes, Logue says. That way, when they get out in
the industry, they already know some basic terminology and theyve been
exposed to it well in advance of hiring guys off the street. GOMC

THE EVOLUTION
OF SAFETY CLOTHING
New fabrics, changes in regulations help make flame-resistant
clothing safer and more comfortable for oil and gas workers
By Mark Saner
A CHANGE IN FABRICS
FR fabrics have not only improved in
terms of their protection properties, but
An oilfield worker wears flame-resistant coveralls made by Workrite Uniform Company on a job site. Flameresistant clothing is changing constantly with new material being developed and new regulations being
introduced. (Photo courtesy of Workrite Uniform Company)

GOMC
DEVELOPMENTS IN REGULATIONS
In parallel with the advances in FR clothings functional and design
properties are the major developments in regulations regarding FR clothings
practical use in the workplace.
In 1974, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
released CFR 1910.132, its general safety standard for personal protective
equipment (PPE). This standard states that PPE which includes equipment
for the eyes, face, head and extremities, protective garments, respiratory
devices, and protective shields and barriers is to be provided, used and
maintained in a sanitary and reliable condition wherever it is necessary by
reason of hazards of processes or environment, chemical hazards, radiological
hazards or mechanical irritants encountered. The standard also requires
employers to analyze the workplace to determine if hazards are present that
require PPE, and if so, select the appropriate types of PPE for the task.
While OSHAs CFR 1910.132 addresses general requirements for the
use of PPE, it does not provide specific recommendations for industries at
higher risk for hazards, nor does it list criteria to determine if such hazards
are present. In light of this need for clarity especially for the oil and
gas industry, which has a prevalent risk of flash fire OSHA issued a
memorandum to this original standard in March 2010.
more frequent. From 2003 to 2009, 716 workers in the oil and gas extraction
industry, exclusively, lost their lives on the job. Thus, the memorandum was
issued to help prevent such occurrences and encourage consistency in FR
clothing use among drilling contractors.
CRITICAL CLOTHING
The evolution of FR clothing over nearly two centuries reveals how
critical that fateful day in 1821, when Gay-Lussac experimented with the heatabsorbing properties of certain chemicals, truly was.
Now, because of the dedication and hard work of FR fabric and clothing
manufacturers, the FR clothing industry is continuing to evolve, improve and
be refined over time.
For the FR industry today, manufacturers are striving to increase garment
quality, improve worker compliance, seek higher standards and develop
safer environments for workers in hazardous industries all in an effort to
potentially save lives. To learn more about the FR clothing industry, including
FR clothing standards, visit FRinformation.com. GOMC
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Mark Saner is the technical manager for Workrite Uniform Company. He brings more than 35 years of
experience in the fire and safety industries to his work, including 29 years in technical support, safety
standards and product development for Akron Brass Manufacturing Company.
While the oil and gas industry has worked to reduce the
risk of flash-fire incidents, these efforts have not eliminated
the occurrence of flash fires, nor the resulting burn injuries
and fatalities. The use of FR clothing greatly improves the
chance of a worker surviving and regaining quality of life
after a flash fire.
Meeting
more than
Basic Needs.
OSHA
The goal of the CFR 1910.132 clarification memorandum was to provide
clearer enforcement rules so that employers in the oil and gas industry would
better understand when FR clothing is required. It also sought to express
OSHAs position that FR clothing is a necessity in certain applications
associated with oil and gas well drilling, servicing, and production operations.
The memorandum labels specific activities in the petroleum industry that
require FR clothing such as snubbing, tubing, open-hole work, cementing,
transferring hydrocarbons, tank heating and many more and certain
circumstances that demand FR protection, such as reaching active gas or
hydrocarbon zones during drilling operations.
OSHAs justification for issuing this memorandum was stated as, While
the oil and gas industry has worked to reduce the risk of flash-fire incidents,
these efforts have not eliminated the occurrence of flash fires, nor the
resulting burn injuries and fatalities. The use of FR clothing greatly improves
the chance of a worker surviving and regaining quality of life after a flash fire.
FR clothing can significantly reduce both the extent and severity of burn
injuries to the body.
Prior to the release of the CFR 1910.132 memorandum, the use of FR
clothing in the oil and gas industries was not a widely held or mandated
practice, making instances of flash-fire burn injuries and fatalities relatively

SOLAR PROTECTION
Polyurethane material hose line from
Kuriyama features UV resistance
By Craig Mandli
aterial-handling hose needs durability to pump abrasive liquids, and toughness to withstand prolonged
use in harsh environments, including snow, ice and
rain. But hoses used outdoors for prolonged periods of time are
also subject to damage resulting from exposure to both heat
and UV light.
Thats why a new hose introduced by Kuriyama of America at the 2015 Water & Wastewater Equipment, Treatment
& Transport (WWETT) Show makes so much sense. Tigerflex
Solarguard Amphibian AMPH-SLR Series heavy-duty polyurethane-lined wet or dry material-handling hoses are specially
constructed to resist this type of damage.
We actually use a special compound that contains a double dose of UV stabilizers that reflect the damaging UV photons
away from the hose, says John Kohls, national sales manager
for Kuriyama of America. We first found success using this
material for hoses in the methane gas industry, then decided to
transfer it to the hydrovac and pumper truck market.
Solarguard hoses are made from a reflective yellow pigment that reduces heat absorption, as they can remain up to
10 degrees F cooler than darker-colored hoses, further protecting the hose and extending the service life. Tests commissioned
by Kuriyama showed a 3 percent reduction in hose material
strength after prolonged UV exposure, whereas the companys
standard PVC hoses showed over 40 percent strength loss over
the same period.

safety and to help keep material flowing smoothly. Kuriyama began selling the
hose in December 2014 in a limited capacity before officially launching the
product to the wastewater industry at the WWETT Show.
The feedback weve received from those using Solarguard hose in the field
has been excellent, says Kohls. Our big goal having it at the WWETT Show
is to educate potential consumers on the strong value it provides, despite the
little bit higher cost.
Kohls says that the contacts and feedback he and the rest of the on-floor
Kuriyama staff received regarding the Solarguard hose has been overwhelmingly
positive. He pointed out that the company came into the show with high expectations, and it was apparent almost immediately those would be surpassed.
This product solves a big problem that a lot of contractors in the field
were dealing with and told us about in previous years, says Kohls. Attending
this show gives our staff a great opportunity to gather that feedback from different portions of the market and use it to make better products. Thats why were
excited to be here. 847/755-0360; www.kuriyama.com. GOMC

Justin McGehee
A typical pressure test can take anywhere from six to 16 hours; McGehee
recalls one that lasted three days because crews kept finding leaks.
The units two water tanks generally dont need to be refilled during
most jobs because each test uses only 15 or 20 gallons of water. Were
not pumping a whole lot of volume, he notes. The orifice in the blowout
preventer is very small.
One factor that contributes to the pumps longevity: They operate only
in short bursts, usually about 10 minutes at a time. McGehee estimates that
if a test takes 24 hours, the pump might run for a total of about two hours.
We test frac stacks, too, which are an assembly of valves used to cap off
a well after a drilling rig is moved off, McGehee explains. Its just like doing
a static-pressure test on a new house to make sure none of the plumbing is
leaking. On some frac stacks, we might put 10,000 to 12,000 psi of pressure
on them to test them.
The pumps last a long time because there arent many moving parts. In
fact, the engine that drives each pump is the one component most prone to
failure, McGehee says. Or the Teflon packing in the pumps sometimes fails,
he says. Either way, he says the Reliable pumps are easy to repair. We can
tear them down and rebuild them in no time, he says. Thats important
because if something happens on location, we want to minimize downtime.
With a price tag of about $100,000, which includes a full complement
of tools and accessories such as test plugs and torque wrenches, the pumps
dont come cheap. But are they a good investment? Heck, yeah, McGehee
says. Theres no reason in the world it cant pay for itself within six months,
depending on how busy you are. GOMC

APS electromagnetic telemetry system
provides 2-way communication
By Ed Wodalski
1.
The
operator
can use EM to talk
down to the tool easily
and quickly without
disrupting the drilling
process, he says. This
has tremendous benefits. First, it allows the operator to adjust the tool
for conditions on the fly. For example, if there is noise interference on
a particular frequency, the tool can be commanded to transmit on a
different frequency.
The tool can be told to transmit at a high power to get through
a difficult formation or at a low power setting to reduce battery draw
and expense.
Downlinking allows the operator to select the optimum data
and sequences for the drilling operation underway, Roberts says. For
example, the tool can be instructed to send pressure more frequently
upon drilling into an unknown formation.
SureShot EM works with the entire family of APS directional and
LWD sensors and offers a drop-in alternative to the APS mud pulse
transmitter.
The largest application is for directional drilling, providing
directional measurements and gamma, Roberts says. The higher data
rate of EM lends it to LWD work. Interest has also been expressed for use
in coal mining. 860/613-4450; www.aps-tech.com.

Smart Shaft Grounding product portfolio (Smart CDR, Smart MGS, Smart
Ground Monitor) from Inpro/Seal provides permanent protection from conductioninhibiting shaft oxidation, providing continuous monitoring and feedback of shaft
grounding performance. Isolated conductive filaments and zero-maintenance
conductive bronze rotors provide connectivity in harsh conditions. The Smart
Ground Monitor alerts users in real time of non-optimal contact between the
filaments and shaft. Contact is measured through the Smart Terminal (standard
on every Smart CDR and Smart MGS). Smart Shaft Grounding meets NEMA MG1
31.4.4.3 and CSI 23 05 13 specifications, available on standard and custom sizes.
