List the objectives for the lesson(s). (Domain I: Planning and Preparation)
The students will be able to:

To internalize the layout of formal letter


To familiarize students with the main parts of a formal letter
To provide the preparatory work necessary to facilitate the writing of formal letters
To familiarize them with the text(content) that is opening lines, closing lines

Identify the general characteristics of the class. (Domain II: Classroom Environment)
Large, airy room
Often very warm as it faces the sun
Not very pleasant as it is used by another class so often the desks and chairs are kept
in a haphazard manner.
Since the room is not an ESL room, unable to display students work
Need to bring and carry dictionaries to the class and cart them back to the ESL room
Computer does not have a CD drive so unable to use CDs which are connected to the
text.
Conventional or classical arrangement with each student with a separate table and
chair
Students sit in pairs

Elicit when we write formal letters
Elicit to whom we write formal letters
Discuss the main parts of a formal letter
Introduce the format of a formal letter Type A
Introduce the format of a formal letter Type B

Make students aware that both formats accepted in IGCSE pattern.


Divide students in groups
An ordering activity will be used to present the recommended layout of such letters .Each

group will be given a set of cards to place them in the correct order .
Correct version will be displayed on the screen
A set of four letters between a restaurant and a customer will be given to students
Read in groups and put them in the order in which they were sent 1,2,3,4.
Feedback as class will be given
Students will select one letter and fill in what is missing from each gap with a line
Teacher does one letter with the class if time permits will do the gap fill exercise for the

other letters.
Divide the students in pairs
Each pair will be provided with photocopies How not to write a formal letter. Student to

find deliberate mistakes in terms of punctuation and layout and in the order of paragraphs
Correct answers will be elicited
Correct version will be displayed on screen
Quick review of layout by students

State how you will measure the students progress towards achieving the objectives.
