RATIONALE STATEMENT FOR LESSON PLAN

The semester before student teaching you will be developing and compiling your
portfolio as one means of demonstrating your readiness for student teaching. Your
portfolio will give you the opportunity to purposefully reflect on your prior coursework
and fieldwork and continued development as a teacher candidate.
For this final project for LTM/SPE 612 you will chose one of the lessons you taught and
write a rationale for a possible future placement in your portfolio. Satisfactory
completion of this project does not guarantee that it will meet all requirements for your
portfolio in the future. Be sure to note the requirements at the time of portfolio
submission and modify this statement, if necessary.
Your rationale is a significant piece of your portfolio as it is a key place for you to
demonstrate your ability to analyze and deeply reflect on your teaching. Include in this
rationale statement:
a. background information about the material/piece(s), e.g. when and where the
work was completed;
b. how the materials/piece(s) demonstrate the Wisconsin Teacher Standards for
Licensure and Development (include WTS # and verbage);
c. how the materials/piece(s) demonstrate the Council for Exceptional Children
Initial Content Standards and Knowledge and Skill Sets (SPE majors only;
include CEC # and verbage);
d. how the materials/piece(s) demonstrate at least two of the Alverno Graduate
Advanced Education Abilities;
e. educational frameworks (2-3) that are reflected in the
materials/pieces/design/implementation.

Please see the sample rationale statements on Moodle. We emphasize that

rationale statements should clearly reflect your practice and your reflections.
When you upload your statement to the DDP, it will also include the original
lesson plan, your self assessment and your faculty feedback.
