24hoursinaday.
Amentalhealthsurveycompletedby135RutgersUniversitystudentsrevealedthat45
percentfeeluncomfortablystressedafewtimesaweek(Gauba,2014).
JenniferBerger,19yearoldjunioratSUNYNewPaltz,isoneofthebusiesttheatre
majorsoncampus.AsVicePresidentoftheNewPaltzPlayers,astudentorganizationthatserves
asaweeklyforumforstudentsinterestedincelebratingtheatrefacultyliaisonforthe
departmentstheatrecouncilrecurringactorinmanySUNYNewPaltzproductionsaswellas
workingfourjobs,Bergerknowsallaboutbeingstressed.
LearningtimemanagementskillsandkeepingastrictschedulehashelpedBergercope
withherstress.Butformostcollegestudents,stresscanleadtoanxietyandmentalhealthissues.
Approximatelyninepercentofcollegestudentsfaceanxietydisorders,themostcommonmental
healthissuesoncollegecampusestoday(Hoxworth,2012).AtBostonUniversity,manystudents
foundrefugeatStudentHealthServices.Infact,duringthe20132014academicyear,
BehavioralMedicinehad11,282visits,asignificantincreasefromthe8,396visitsthattook
placeduringthe20072008year(ORourke,2014).

WevehadasimilarincreasehereatSUNYNewPaltz.AccordingtoSueAcosta,a
seniorcounseloratthePsychologicalCounselingCenter,atleasthalfofthestudentswetake
careofherearedealingwithanxietydisordersduetotheamountofstresstheyarepressured
witheveryday.
Whereexactlyisallofthisstresscomingfrom?JuniortransferstudentatSUNYNew
PaltzstudyingCommunicationDisordersChristianFouchetfeelsthepressureofthefutureis
whatstresseshimoutthemost.Themoreyouhavetoofferwhenyougraduatecollege,the
betteroffyoullbebecauseyoullbemorelikelytogetawellpayingjob,hestated.According

percentofundergraduateshaveaveragegradesofAorhigher,versussevenpercentin196973
percentofstudentsexpecttobeatleastaswelloffastheirparents.
Someofthesymptomsofanxietydisorderscausedbystresscanincludelackofsleep,
skippingmeals,eatingtoomuch,lackofenergy,andpanic/anxietyattacks.Anxietydisorders
canevenleadtodepression,substanceabuse,andeatingdisorders.BothFouchet,Berger,and
herbestfriendKimberlyCincotta,20yearoldtheatremajoratSUNYNewPaltz,haveall
confessedtoskippingmealswhileunderalotofstress.IvedefinitelyforgottentoeatwhileI
wasworkingonbigprojects,saysCincotta,whohasrecentlybeenconcentratingonsound
design.
AcostaexpressedthatalotofstudentswhocometothePsychologicalCounselingCenter
withstressrelatedanxietyexperiencethesesymptomsalmostregularly.Noteveryonerealizes
howstressandanxietycanseverelyaffectonesphysicalhealthjustasmuchasonesmental
health,shesaid.

intoonenight,Bergerishavingamuchmorerelaxedtimethanshesusedtonowthatthe
showsareoverandtheshopsareclosed,allIreallyhavetofocusonaremyclassesandhanging
outwithfriendssoitsactuallynotthatbad!
