Obsidian Crowd Funding

Up And Running
Efforts to rescue the Nelson pirate ship Obsidian began

November 19, with a crowd funding website launch (called indiegogo) and a Facebook page that was created to facilitate better
communications.
The idea is to raise the popular, iconic ship out of the water
using a barge and crane, then transport it to a safe spot for
repairs. Gary Ramsbottom, the owner and builder of the ship
named Obsidian, encourages the Friends of Obsidian to donate
to or spread the word about the crowd funding endeavour.
The crowd funding campaign ends Sunday, December 20.

Holidays With Year-End Bash
Burgeoning Selkirk College talent will shine in an eclectic night of entertainment when Contemporary Music
& Technology program students hit the stage at Nelsons
Spiritbar on Friday, December 18.
The traditional Christmas break show features student
based bands that have been toiling for several weeks in
preparation for a night that will throw a spotlight on talent and hard work. With only a few weeks left in the fall
semester, students are ready to go out in style with an
unforgettable night of diverse, rich and funky sounds.
Creating a show like this gives our students real life
experience about what actually goes into putting on a
show of this calibre, says Selkirk College instructor Laura
Landsberg. There is learning the music, but it goes well
beyond that with the marketing and organizing of an
event. Im very excited and proud of what the students
have created.
Each of the five ensembles is joined by a Selkirk College
instructor who has mentored and collaborated with the
students over the last few months. The talent rich instructors will be on stage with students for the vibrant night of
eclectic music.

SoulTrain will unleash a powerhouse mix of classics and
modern hits with the best characteristics of the rhythm &
blues genre. Also in the mix is Van Whalen, a group that
will be rocking the music of legendary guitar bands like
Rush, Van Halen and The Jimi Hendrix Experience.
Trevors Disciples closes the great evening of music. With
a nod to the past and a wink to the future, Trevors Disciples are a new age Biebercore dance band devoted to getting Chad Kroeger and Avril Lavigne back together.
The Year End Celebration show starts at 9 pm with doors
opening at 8 pm, at Spiritbar in Nelsons Hume Hotel. Cover
charge for the evening is $10 at the door and $5 for students.
All proceeds from the evening will be going to the Nelson
CARES Society Room to Live campaign which is creating
affordable housing for people in Nelsons downtown core.

MONEY GIFT WITH YOUR EX?
Your boss gives you a large financial
gift. Can your spouse get their hands on
it? Normally, no, but you could lose it or a
chunk of it.
Our family law has rules for how your
property (and debts) are to be divided if you
and your spouse split up. For starters, family
property (and debts) are to be shared equally
unless the court decides a split down the
middle would be significantly unfair.
But some things, like property you
each owned before your relationship, and
individual inheritances or gifts you get
before you separate, dont count as family
property theyre excluded property,
which generally isnt shared (though value
increases during the relationship are).
Money or other assets derived from
excluded property (say, money you get
from selling your gift or inheritance) also
typically dont count as family property.
But how you deal with a gift or inheritance
that was initially yours alone may (or may
not) turn it into family property.
In one recent court case, Henry and Trudy
(names changed) started living together in
2003, got married in 2004 and separated
nine years later. They lived in Richmond
and had three children together.
Henry had been with his employer
company since 1997. About two years
before he and Trudy separated, he got a
large $2 million sum as an inheritance gift
from the companys principal when that
wealthy businessman passed away.
Henry was a director of more than 30
companies related to his employer company.
Concerned about his risk as a company

director should things go south with any
of these companies, he put their Richmond
family home in Trudys name alone for
creditor protection. He agreed in court that
this home was family property.
Trudy wanted to move from Richmond
to Vancouver. So late 2011 (while still
together), the couple used the bulk of
Henrys $2 million inheritance to buy land
in Vancouver for a future home. Henry also
put that land in Trudys name alone, and
they started building.
When the couple separated in early
2013, only the new foundation had been
constructed. To avoid a $500,000 loss, they
completed construction although they were
separated. They then sold the Vancouver
house essentially at cost, avoiding a loss.
Henry argued the $2 million hed been
gifted, mostly used for the new Vancouver
property (and the $2 million from its sale)
were excluded property, so shouldnt be
split. But the court decided that when he
put the land in Trudys name, making it her
property for creditor protection, that was
a gift to her. It turned the land into family
property, so the sale money had to be shared.
Several recent cases have come to
different conclusions about what happens
after a separation to excluded property
(or its sale proceeds) transferred between
spouses.
This is a tricky area, so see a good family
lawyer about who gets what after you and
your ex separate.

The Salon of the Arts is an annual visual arts show

Environmental Education
Columbia Basin children and communities will continue to receive opportunities to learn about, appreciate
and care for the natural world around them, through
Columbia Basin Trusts $1 million commitment to two
environmental education initiatives. These are the Know
Your Watershed program and the Columbia Basin Environmental Education Network.
These initiatives have proven successful and were
pleased we can commit additional funding to help them
become more sustainable, plan into the future and grow,
said Tim Hicks, Columbia Basin Trust Manager, Water
and Environment. Through these initiatives Basin students will continue to have hands on opportunities to
increase their understanding of the natural environment,
which Basin residents have told us is a priority.
The Know Your Watershed program will be receiving
$540,500 over three years. Working with environmental
educators in the Basin, the Trust developed this program in
2010 to help grade eight students understand where their
water comes from, how it is used and where it goes after it
is used. The program is delivered to schools by local educators around the Basin working with Wildsight. Learn

edge from local community experts, not only does it
make a big impact on students, but it also strengthens the
community as a whole.
The Columbia Basin Environmental Education Network
(CBEEN) will be receiving $500,000 over three years. Created in partnership with the Trust in 2002, CBEEN supports environmental education in the Basin by offering
professional development for educators and providing
them access to training, resources, opportunities and tools.
It also delivers the Wild Voices for Kids program, which
has local experts deliver curriculum-linked programs to
schools across the Basin. Learn more at cbeen.org
CBEEN is excited to continue to play a key role in

encouraging environmental stewardship and sustainability
in the Canadian Columbia Basin by supporting environmental education, said Duncan Whittick, CBEEN Executive Director. There are so many educators from across
our region who provide excellent learning opportunities
for both classrooms and communities and we look forward to continuing to work hard to support their efforts.
The Trust highlights environmental education and
stewardship as one of the five goals in its Environment

Count Birds?
Do you have birds in your yard? Do you feed birds? Are

you a visiting birder? Every year since 1900, Christmas
Bird Counts have been held across the Western Hemisphere between December 14 and January 5.
The Christmas Bird Count is a citizen science project
where the information collected by volunteer participants
is used to assess population trends and distribution of
birds. The common raven is the most widespread species
on Canadian counts. The Eurasian Collared Dove continues to spread throughout Western Canada, including to
Kaslo. Some years, robins and flocks of winter finches will
show up in our area. A lot depends on the weather!
Kaslo Area Birders invite you to participate in any or all
three local Christmas Bird Counts and its free. You can
help monitor birds by getting involved as a field observer
or feeder watcher anywhere within each 24 km count circle. Participants, old and new to birding, are all welcome.

that dogs and cats
have a keen sense of
smell and can find
the chocolate or other
food items wrapped
up under the tree.
Holidays Can Be Ruff On Pets
Its the most wonderful time of the year. It can also be the
most hectic, with gift toting visitors coming in and out of
our homes. Not to mention the decorations and the food;
lots of food.
The most common Christmas related illnesses or emergencies we see are related to dietary indiscretion, says Dr.
Kendra Goulet, head of emergency services at Mississauga
- Oakville Veterinary Emergency Hospital. Around the
holidays pets have more opportunity to get into and eat,
things they should not.
Chocolate, for example, is toxic to pets. Chocolate contains theobromine, which can be fatal if taken in high
doses. While theobromine poisoning is most common
in dogs, the toxic dose in cats is even smaller (though
cats are less likely to eat chocolate since theyre not able
to taste sweetness). Dr. Goulet advises turkey, ham and
other holiday dinner foods should also be kept away
The addition of a Christmas tree to your home can pose

festive threats to your pet. When ingested, ornaments,
ribbon, tinsel and new toys can cause obstruction of their
stomach and intestinal tract. Place gifts, decorations and
ornaments out of your pets reach if possible. And if your
cat or dog becomes inexplicably fixated on a certain ornament or decoration, you may consider simply removing it.
Even with the most diligent pet parents, accidents can
happen. Your dog may get her paws on that package of
chocolate your neighbour brought over, or your cat might
eat through your childs homemade pipe cleaner ornament. Thats why its important to keep your veterinarians
number close by.
Speak with your veterinary healthcare team about which
emergency clinic is closest to you for those times when an
emergency occurs out of regular business hours, such as
over the Christmas holiday.
