STUDY QUESTIONS
TOPIC 1
1. How would you describe the community that you are presently residing?
The community that I am presently residing in is a community in which the people
are very busy with so many things, theyre busy with their work, businesses and
many other things. People are always in a hurry maybe everyone is used to it
because we are living in a city where we need to cope up easily because rapid
changes are evident every day.
2. What is the type of this community? Please explain.
The type of community I am presently residing in is an URBAN Community, I say
so because it can easily be seen that it is transitory and business like. Many
establishments are just around the corner buildings, malls etc.
3. As an NSTP student, if you were to start your community service in this
community, what will you do? Describe the strategies and activities that you will
use to organize/develop this community.
As an NSTP student Id like to develop first is the camaraderie of our community
or the relationship of one another because I have observed that the community in
the city is not intact, the relationship among other families are not that tight. And
how could one project could be successful if there is no good communication
among the people. And once that our community relationship is good Id like to
start to a project that would keep our community a pleasant place to live on,
keeping the surroundings clean to keep away from diseases like dengue and
malaria. And also a project that all of the old things that are not needed would be
donated to those who are less fortunate. It is our time to give back.

STUDY QUESTIONS
TOPIC 2
1. What is the purpose of social investigation?
The purpose of the Social Investigation is to gather data in community
development. It is a process of getting to know the community more through
person to person. The social investigation will help us to be engaged in a
systematic and scientific ways of gathering data and utilizing these data in
coming up with the community plans and programs.
2.

How could you compare and contrast the three (3) approaches in understanding
the community?
The ECOLOGICAL APPROACH speaks about the physical attributes of the
community and how these affect mans interaction with his social environment.
What is being demonstrated here is the lifestyle of the people, stages of
development etc. and one should use his sociological eye in investigating. While
the STRUCTURAL APPROACH is more on seeing the community as a structure
of relationship. It is more on about the communication of the people. It presents
the types and nature of organized groups in the community. And the
NORMATIVE APPROACH is more on about seeing the social personality of
community with a set of values and tradition.

3. If you would be asked to describe the community where you are presently
residing, how would do it? What would you focus on? Why?
The community I am presently residing in is a community with an open mind but
our community lacks in camaraderie and partnership. I would focus in the tree
approaches because I know those three are an effective way in improving my
community.

STUDY QUESTIONS
TOPIC 3
1. Discuss the importance of community needs assessment in community service?
Community Needs Assessment is important because change is the main reason
to obtain accurate information regarding the needs of the community. As they
experience natural growth and development, communities encounter fluctuating
demographics. It is an invaluable tool for involving the people in solving problems
and developing goals. It is important because through this assessment we will be
able to learn more about what the community needs are, and to get an honest
and objective description of needs from the people themselves. And to become
aware of the possible need of the people which are particularly important.
2. Among the techniques which are used in community needs assessment, identify
the technique which you think is more appropriate to use in communities which
are assisted by the NSTP students. Explain your answer.
With my own understandings and observations, I can say that among the
techniques given I think FORUM is more appropriate to use in communities
because in forums people are to express opinions about the problems and
needs. And through it, one could have the chance to speak up and share to all,
all those things that you think should be corrected and should be added in the
community. With these forums one can open up someones eye so that change
and development of the community could starten up, development will happen if
everyone is deprived from voicing out his own thought. And with this, we could be
able to know all the problems. How could we give solutions to the problems if we
dont know the problem. Thats why we have democracy in our country we have
the right to speak up our own thoughts.
3. What do you think would be implication of implementing community projects
without needs assessment?
The implication of implementing community projects without prior community
needs assessment would be such a great failure because we are not able to
identify the assets of a community and we are not able to determine the potential
concern that it faces. We dont know the residents opinion about the issues and
problems they are dealing with. We dont know what should we need to develop
just because we didnt assess the community that we are handling.

STUDY QUESTIONS
TOPIC 4
1. Discuss the importance of project planning.
The importance of project planning is that through it projects become successful,
most especially if the project is well planned and organized. Proper planning
results to a slot of saving in terms of money, materials, machines and manpower
resources. When everything is well planned and prepared nothing will be wasted.
And we can be able to imagine and visualize what could happen to our project.
2. What may happen if an NSTP student implements a community project without
planning? Present five practical measures to address this concern.
If an NSTP student implements a community project without planning the
outcome will not be successful. They would just be wasting time, money and
effort in doing such project without prior planning. No one has become successful
in a bara bara lang way. And the common problems could be cost overruns,
poor working conditions, labor availability, mobilization of funds and inadequate
logistical supports.
3. What is the difference between monitoring and evaluation? Explain how these
processes are conducted?
Monitoring is the routine of gathering and reporting of project accomplishments
against measures of expected performance. It is necessary to assess the
progress and make timely decisions to ensure that progress is achieved and
maintained in accordance with the given schedule. In monitoring we could
identify the problem at project level so that we could have immediate corrective
measures. While the evaluation is concerned in classifying the achievement of
program objectives, its effect and impact. It demonstrates the actual changes and
progress made in project. And it could provide us the proof that the desired
outcomes are being achieved.

STUDY QUESTIONS
Topic 5

1. What is the difference between organizing and social mobilization?

Organizing implies building a structure or organization that will outlast the
particular campaign. It involves building deep relationship with core leaders, who
in turn build their own network. Organizing is about relationships. While
mobilizing is more about on numbers, it occurs within campaigns, in response to
specific call to action, but also refers to more surface efforts to bring people into
action for time-limited efforts.
2. Which strategy is the best for urban and rural communities?
I think the best strategy for urban and rural communities is to create a shared
vision in understanding the goals of the community partnership by drafting a
written mission statement specific to the collaboration. In order for a project to be
successful one should share their minds, opinions on the issues and projects
being presented.
3. Why is it there a need to mobilize people in the community?
It is needed to mobilize people in the community because mobilization is bringing
together different sectoral groups for purposes of raising their social awareness
and intensifying their participation and involvement on issues that affect their life.
Considering the belief that there is power in number, social mobilization becomes
an effective approach to help achieve the goals of community empowerment.
