Im so sorry for posted response of Kie Hos article
very late, I hope I could still join this discussion.
First , I disagree with Kie Ho that education in other countries is defined as " dedication and obedience ( Paragraph 7, line 1 ). He made a generalization by using only his own experience in high school days, however, it is not applicable to all the countries. Every school have a different policy to make their curriculum. I have a friend who study in Singapore. She told me that, she very happy when High School, she won gold medal of Medical Research, its because her teachers give her a chance to try and to think critically. She get not only knowledge from her teacher but also support and guidance. Its like a share, we get something from teacher and teacher get something from us. And in my high school (In Indonesia), we're actually are not asked only to listen and be obedient to teacher, we ask questions in the class and even raise objections when they think what the teacher says wrong, or we dont like the teaching style. Even if they seem to be under strong control, its not because Indonesians education is designed to bring out dedication and obedience from students, but because Indonesians particular circumstances cause such a sight. In fact, there are more than
forty students in a class, therefore, its not easy for
students to act as freely as American students who have only about twenty-five students in a class. Second, in Kie Ho's article, he tried to prove that American education is better than other country even though it doesnt have high standards in basic skills as mathematics and language (Paragraph 8, line 1). I disagree with his statement, he didnt consider that people couldnt obtain advanced innovation when performing the creativity without basic knowledge. For example, a computer programmer has to know at least basic skills and technical terms so as to devise some items although he has an original idea. A students who will study in other country have to learn "basic laguange" to comunicate and make a relationship with people in that country. And if we will study about calculus, we have to understand the basic of Mathematics so we could solve the problem. So, According to me, learning basic skills is very important. Third, Kie Ho compared Indonesians education system antiquity with the Americans education system, obviously it's very different, Indonesia has changes and progress in the education system. So I think, thats not good comparison. Kie Ho also
says, that Americans education system better
than other country. I disagree with that, freedom in creativity has been applied in Indonesia, we do not just memorize, but we require to understand. May be in biology or history we have to memorize a lot of names and terms, Have you ever think that memorize is important? Improving our ability in memorize can increasing ability of left brain Intelligence Quotient (IQ). So, According to me, Indonesians education system better than Americans. Ok, may be you have another opinions guys?
