Q1

Complementary and alternative medicine, CAM for short, has never been
.more popular. Nearly 40 percent of adults report using CAM
Alternative medicine practices are used instead of standard medical
treatments. Alternative medicine is distinct from complementary
medicine which is meant to accompany, not to replace, standard medical
.practices
Doctors are embracing CAM therapies, too, often combining them with
mainstream medical therapies spawning the term "integrative
".medicine
Alternative medicine includes dietary supplements, megadose vitamins,
herbal preparations, special teas, massage therapy, magnet therapy,
.hypnotherapy and meditation

What are complementary and alternative medicine therapies?

To make sense of the many therapies available, it helps to look at how
they're classified by the National Center for Complementary and
Alternative Medicine (NCCAM):
1- Whole medical systems
2- Mind-body medicine
3- Biologically based practices
4- Manipulative and body-based practices
5- Energy medicine

1.

Alternative Medical Systems

.Alternative medical systems are built upon complete systems of theory and practice

Ancient healing systems. Unaniand ayurveda from south asia and

traditional Chinese medicine where both the systems have roots more than
4500 years.

Homeopathy. This approach uses minute doses of a substance that cause

symptoms to stimulate the body's self-healing response.

Naturopathy. This approach focuses on noninvasive treatments to help

your body do its own healing and uses a variety of practices, such as massage,
acupuncture, herbal remedies, exercise and lifestyle counseling.

2.

Mind-Body Medicine

Mind-body medicine uses a variety of techniques designed to enhance

the mind's capacity to affect bodily function and symptoms. Some
techniques that were considered CAM in the past have become
,mainstream for example
Patient support groups

Cognitive-behavioral therapy

Other mind-body techniques are still considered CAM, including

.meditation, mental healing, hypnotherapy and art therapies

3.

Biologically Based Therapies

Biologically based therapies in CAM use substances found in nature,

such as herbs(also known as botanicals), foods, and vitaminsand
.minerals, and probiotics
Herbs and supplements can be taken as teas, oils, syrups, powders,
.tablets or capsules
4.

Manipulative and Body-Based Practices

These methods use human touch to move or manipulate a specific part

of your body. They include chiropractic and osteopathic manipulation
and massage.
.

5.
Energy Therapies
Some CAM practitioners believe an invisible energy force flows through your body,
and when this energy flow is blocked or unbalanced you can become sick.

Different traditions call this energy by different names, such as chi, prana and life
force. The goal of these therapies is to unblock or re-balance your energy force.
Energy therapies include qi gong, therapeutic touch, reiki and magnet therapy and
.yoga

Why are some doctors hesitant about CAM?

Many conventional doctors practicing today didn't receive training in CAM or
integrative medicine, so they may not feel comfortable making recommendations or
.addressing questions in this area
Doctors also have good reason to be cautious when it comes to some CAM.
Conventional medicine values therapies that have been demonstrated through
research and testing to be safe and effective. While scientific evidence exists for
some CAM therapies, for many there are key questions that are yet to be
.answered
In addition, some CAM practitioners make exaggerated claims about curing
diseases, and some ask you to forgo treatment from your conventional doctor. For
.these reasons, many doctors are cautious about recommending these therapies

Why is there so little evidence about CAM?

One reason for the lack of research in alternative treatments is that large, carefully
controlled medical studies are costly. Trials for conventional therapies are often
funded by big companies that develop and sell drugs. Fewer resources are
available to support trials of CAM therapies. That's why NCCAM was established
. to foster research into CAM and make the findings available to the public

Naturopathy
Naturopathyalso called naturopathic medicineis a medical system
that has evolved from a combination of traditional practices and health
.care approaches popular in Europe during the 19th century
The word naturopathy comes from Greek and Latin and literally
translates as nature disease. A central belief in naturopathy is that
nature has a healing power.
Guided by a philosophy that emphasizes the healing power of nature,
naturopathic practitioners now use a variety of traditional and modern
.therapies
Practitioners view their role as supporting the bodys inherent ability to
maintain and restore health, and prefer to use treatment approaches
.they consider to be the most natural and least invasive
Today, naturopathy is practiced in a number of countries, including the
United States, Canada, Germany, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand
and india.

Underlying Principles
The practice of naturopathy is based on principles that are similar to and
consistent with the principles of primary care medicine as practiced by
conventional physicians. These include:

First do no harm. Try to minimize harmful side effects and avoid

suppression of symptoms.

Physician as teacher. Educate patients and encourage them to

take responsibility for their own health.
Treat the whole person. Consider all factors (e.g., physical,
mental, emotional, spiritual, genetic, environmental, social) when
tailoring treatment to each patient.
Prevention. Assess risk factors and, in partnership with patients,
make appropriate interventions to prevent illness.
Healing power of nature. Seek to identify and remove obstacles
to the bodys natural processes for maintaining and restoring health.
Treat the cause. Focus on the causes of a disease or condition,
rather than its symptoms.

Treatment
Naturopathic practitioners use many different treatment modalities.
:Examples include

Nutrition counseling, including dietary changes (such as eating

more whole and unprocessed foods) and use of vitamins, minerals,
and other supplements

Herbal medicines

Homeopathy

Hydrotherapy

Physical medicine, such as therapeutic massage and

joint manipulation

Exercise therapy

Lifestyle counseling.
Some practitioners use other treatments as well or, if appropriate, may
.refer patients to conventional health care providers

NCCAM-Funded Research in Naturopathy

Some recent NCCAM-supported projects have been studying:

A naturopathic dietary approach for type 2 diabetes

Naturopathic treatments for periodontal (gum) disease

Naturopathic herbal and dietary approaches for breast cancer prevention.

Probiotics May Help Lots of Ailments

Although they are still being studied, probiotics may help several specific illnesses,
studies show. In 2011, experts at Yale University reviewed the research. They
:concluded that probiotics are most effective for

Treating childhood diarrhea

Treating ulcerative colitis
Treating necrotizing enterocolitis, a type of infection and inflammation of the

intestines mostly seen in infants

Preventing antibiotic-associated diarrhea and infectious diarrhea
Preventing pouchitis, an inflammation of the intestines that can follow

intestinal surgery
Treating and preventing eczema associated with cows milk allergy
Helping the immune system
The Yale University panel of experts concluded that probiotics may be helpful in
:other ways, although the evidence is less convincing. These include

Treating symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome

Treating vaginitis
Treating diarrhea caused by C. difficile bacteria
Treating Crohn's disease
Probiotics may also be useful in unexpected ways. A study published in 2010
suggests that probiotics may lower the risk of common childhood illnesses such as
.ear infections, strep throat, and colds

Metabolic Cleansing & Nutrition Therapy

A great first step toward restoring good health is a metabolic

detoxification cleanse, tailored to your health needs. The cleanse is easy
to do and uses vitamin-rich shakes and a carefully planned diet to help
your body gently release toxins and reduce inflammation that
.contributes to many common health problems
Many patients see great improvements after a cleanse, such as weight
loss, better digestion, hormone balance, relief from allergies, carpal
tunnel stress, and more. Youll also learn a lot about what your own body
needs which foods make you thrive with energy and which ones

prompt intolerances, so you can easily make choices that help you feel
.your personal best

Living green

I cant say I disagree, but too often that message is scary toxins in
your food and beauty care products, climate change, over-populationI
personally dont believe stoking a doomed consciousness is the path to a
greener lifestyle
A green lifestyle should be a celebration of the things that inspire you

The naturopath's detox plan

Think carefully before embarking on a detox. If it is just another crazy health kick before you resume a life
fuelled by fizzy drinks and junk food, dont bother. However, a detox diet can be healthy if it is used as a short.term kick-start to renew a longer-term commitment to a healthy, maintainable diet
Generally a detox lasts between one to five days however there are no hard and fast rules. "Everyone is
starting at a different place when they go into a cleanse, and may react in a different way," says Snyder. Listen
.to your body and do what feels right
What to expect
If you are a caffeine or sugar addict, you will probably experience a few days of headaches, nausea and
feeling under par. Drink plenty of fluids. After 24 to 48 hours of misery, you can look forward to increased
.energy, better sleep, improved bowel function and glowing skin and you may lose excess kilograms
A worthwhile detox takes anywhere between a week to a month, depending on your state of health and social
.calendar

What to avoid
Sugar. Any added sugar or sugar included in baked or packaged foods. Check labels anything +
.over five grams per 100 grams is added sugar
.Alcohol +

Grains. Anything made from wheat, rye, oats, rice, barley, spelt, millet and even quinoa is forbidden. +

.with herbal teas

.Anything artificial. Sweeteners, flavours, colouring. Stick to unprocessed foods +

.Anything deep-fried. Food should be raw or steamed, stir-fried or dry-baked +

.Dairy. With the exception of unsweetened plain yoghurt, ricotta cheese and raw milk +

.leaves
Herbal teas. Try teas of traditional detoxifying herbs such as burdock, echinacea, calendula, red +

:They are also well known for their role in helping to prevent heart disease through their potential ability to

regulate blood clotting

keep the heart beating on its normal rhythm

prevent/improve inflammation

reduce blood pressure

improve blood vessel function

improve cholesterol levels
lower triglycerides

:Additionally, we also know now that there are several types of omega-3s
.Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) helps keep body tissues healthy

.Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is a major component of cell membranes in your eyes and brain
.Both EPA and DHA are found mostly in fish, shellfish, and algae

Alpha linoleic acid (ALA) is found mostly in vegetable oils, flax seed and walnuts and also plays a role
.in maintaining healthy body tissues
