ENVY

KEY VERSES:
But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against

1. WHAT IS ENVY?
Merriam-Webster: painful awareness of an advantage enjoyed by another with a desire
to possess the same advantage (syn. covetousness, jealousy)
Keywords:
(a) painful there may be unhappiness for the other person
(b) advantage Give examples. Success, money, fame, friends or belongingness,
achievement, luxury
(c) desire strong word for wanting something
2. WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT ENVY?
a. Envy is a work of flesh. (Galatians 5:19)
b. Envy shows that you are a carnal Christian (What is a carnal Christian?)
For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and
behaving like mere man? (1 Corinthians 3:3b, see also Titus 3:3)

3. GODS COMMANDS:
1. Do not envy sinners In what possible ways do we envy unbelievers?
Do not let your heart envy sinners, but be zealous for the fear of the Lord all day.
(Proverb 23:17)
Indi ka magkahisa sa makasasala nga mga tawo. Magmatutom ka sa Ginoo sa

-They may have what you dont, but remember your treasure is in heaven
-Focus on your fear of the Lord, not envy for sinner
2. Do not envy one another (body of Christ) In what possible ways do we envy

our brothers and sisters?

-Paul addressed this to Church of Galatia. Envying could even exist inside the Body, but
this should not be
-Believers should walk in the Spirit, obey the prompting of the Spirit because we are at
war with the flesh. A believer following the Spirits lead will not envy others

4. CLOSING VERSES:
a. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.
Let us walk properly, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in
strife and envy. (Romans 13:12-13)
