FENMENO DEL NIO

1. QU ES EL FENMENO EL NIO?
El fenmeno El Nio es un calentamiento de la superficie de las aguas del Pacfico que afecta principalmente el
Sureste Asitico, Australia y Sudamrica. Este se caracteriza por el ingreso de una masa superficial de aguas
clidas en el mar, desde el norte en el caso del Per, que genera un aumento cambios climticos anmalos,
como el aumento de la temperatura del mar, afectado la pesca, adems de intensas lluvias y tambin sequas.
2. SU ORIGEN
Su nombre se refiere al nio Jess, porque este fenmeno ocurre aproximadamente en el tiempo de Navidad
en el Ocano Pacfico, por la costa oeste del Sur de Amrica. El nombre del fenmeno es Oscilacin del Sur El
Nio, ENSO por sus siglas en ingls. Es un sndrome que ocurre desde hace ms de 7 milenios.
3. POR QU OCURRE EL FENMENO DE EL NIO?
El metelogo Abraham Levy seala que este fenmeno ocurre porque el agua del mar, que tradicionalmente es
fra en el otoo e invierno, se calienta y ello trae tambin un aumento de la temperatura general del aire. "Las
corrientes de agua clida que no estn en la superficie del mar viajan por debajo del mar, desde Australia hasta

marzo".
A partir de ese momento, las aguas clidas entran a nuestras playas por el norte, extendiendose a lo largo de
todo el litoral peruano usualmente durante abril.
4. CONSECUENCIAS DEL FENMENO DE EL NIO
- Lluvias intensas.
- Existen especies que no sobreviven al cambio de temperatura y mueren, generando prdida econmica en
actividades primarias.
- Calentamiento de la Corriente de Humboldt o Corriente del Per.
- Surgen enfermedades como el clera, que en ocasiones se trasforman en epidemias muy difciles de
erradicar.
- Prdidas pesqueras.
- Intensa formacin de nubes.
- Periodos muy hmedos.
- Baja presin atmosfrica.
