The Difference

I have been in strong support of animal rights ever since I had a face to face
encounter with a mother pig in a factory farming situation. Looking deep into
her eyes I saw the terror and the horror of what she was going through. The
experience changed my life.
Most people are so accustomed to seeing animals in factory farming
situations, that they dont really have the eyes to see what they are seeing.
There is no contrast...nothing to compare it against.
The Difference is a film that provides that contrast, highlighting the clear
and obvious difference between a happy animal and one experiencing the
horrors of abuse. The film would start with footage of a happy pig, or many
happy pigs. No narration would be necessary, just up close and personal
shots, highlighting the details... really capturing the happy and joyful spirit in
the eyes and face and smile. After so many minutes of this the film would cut
sharply to the eyes and face and broken spirit of a pig or pigs in factory
farming. The sadness and the hollowness. The confusion. The injured and
dull physical condition, the hurt, the resigned and dejected mood.
The film would then move onto another species and then another and then
another. The point would not be to show as many species as possible, but
rather to use the most effective examples possible.
I am writing you because I am unclear where to start with this idea. I could
see the footage being crowd-sourced, gathering a huge pool of happy and
sad images to select from. I could also see a particular film crew tackling it,
in order to maintain continuity of style and quality. I am not attached to any
particular way. I am only interested in creating what would be most effective
in thawing hearts and opening minds to the reality of what is in fact taking
place. With human civil rights we had the big advantage of being of the same
species, of speaking the same language. And even still it was not that long
ago we still enslaved one another. How much more difficult to help people
relate to the reality that animals are also spiritual and aware beings, with
real personalities and all the characteristics of the individual. We simply do
not have the eyes to see with. (The film could also be called, Can you
See?)
Not being sure where to begin, I figured the best thing I could do was throw
the idea out there and get good feedback and suggestions, as well as gather
potential collaborators. I am excited to finally get this out of my head and out
into the open.
