Audaces Digiflash is a software package that captures and scans patterns by way
of photos taken with a digital camera. Users may photograph their patterns, and the
software will scan them automatically. Besides that, users may manipulate patterns after
scanning.
The software interface has been designed so as to streamline user-software
interaction by means of communication tools.
This digital manual contains information about the features available in Audaces
Digiflash, providing helpful explanations, illustrated examples and tips about the
application tools.
In this guide, you may read about the basics for handling a digital camera and may
obtain helpful technical information on how to use the software and its features.
Digiflash
Audaces Digiflash scans pattern outlines using photos taken with a digital camera.
This version cannot detect internal notches or outline notches, only Digiflash Plus.
Digiflash Plus
Audaces Digiflash Plus scans pattern outlines using photos taken with a digital
camera. Some of its highlight features are the insertion of Internal Marking in the patterns
and the detection of Notches on the outline. This version comes with a magnetic kit.

You will see below how to hang the frame adequately on a flat wall where they will
be no tampering with detection:
Hanging patterns on the wall adequately with all screws and on a flat background.
The following figure illustrates the three most common mistakes made when
hanging patterns:
Superposing the pattern onto the frame edge or using up the space between two
template semicircles;
Pattern superposing;
When patterns are too close to each other. Keep patterns at least 1cm from each
other.
Three mistakes that cannot be made when hanging patterns on the frame.
1- hanging patterns on the frame covering the semicircles; 2- superposing patterns; 3- keeping patterns less than 1cm
between each other (if too close, two or more patterns may be detected as one pattern)
Never photograph the frame in a way that the template does not appear or appears
partially, as shown below:
Highly slanted photos taken from a long distance demand a lot more work from the
application. That interferes with the final precision of scanned patterns , which may be
noticeably damaged, whereas more straightened photos taken from a shorter distance are
much less troublesome. In this way, it is inadvisable to replicate such conditions, especially
those in which the photos have been taken from a long distance. Bearing that in mind, it is
essential that photos have as few disruptive elements as possible, as mentioned earlier
and as shown in the following figure.
After photographing patterns, download the files to your computer to scan patterns
later. This will be dealt with later in this manual.
Manual version 5.0
Tip: check if any parts of the pattern have been folded or raised after hanging them
because that would tamper with the detection of patterns and would even make their
scanning unusable. You may use additional magnets to hang patterns, but you must not
use any other materials for such purpose (e.g. sellotapes, pins, glue, etc). That could
damage the frame as well as cause further problems when scanning patterns.
Camera Settings
The purpose of this part of the manual is to show the digital camera's necessary
requirements for a good performance of the software.
Camera Requirements
The camera minimum resolution should be 5 megapixels for Digiflash and 7
megapixels for Digiflash Plus, however, it is advisable to use 12 megapixels so that
measurements are as precise and coherent with real-life measurements as possible.
the object and the background. Should that happen, the image may be read incorrectly by
the application which will result in deformities in the detected patterns.
See samples of photos taken with and without the control of exposure
compensation in the following figures:
Tip: With a few limited exceptions, it is advisable to always adjust your camera's exposure
compensation. In general, +1.0 EV brings good results in terms of lighting and contrast
between the frame and the patterns when the image is well-lit. Run tests with your digital
camera and try to find the best value applicable to local lighting and the camera.
Photo taken with high ISO sensitivity: image with high granularity.
Flash Settings
Always photograph using the flash regardless of the local lighting conditions.
Optical zoom
Set your camera's optical zoom to 1.1 - 1.2x. For most cameras, these zoom
settings may be obtained by tapping the zoom button once or twice. You should keep 30
cm away from the object without zooming.
This setting only applies to digital cameras with optical zoom. Do not confuse this
with the digital zoom feature available for some cameras with non-removable lens, which
should not be used as advised in the Digiflash manual.
Exposure Time or Shutter Speed: use the lowest possible to avoid obtaining
blurry images (1/40 or lower);
Factor of the Shutter Speed: the factor value changes according to focal length
and the maximum aperture diameter of the lens. Use low factor values (F3. 6, F2.8);
White Balance: set the white balance according to the lighting conditions that is
more similar to the one being photographed;
ISO Sensitivity: use a low ISO (100 or lower) to avoid granularity;
Exposure Compensation: always additional (+1.0 EV);
Flash: always on.

It shows a thumbnail image open on the work area and icons for zoom setting.
It provides a frame that shows the area of the image that is being magnified by the
zoom. You may use the frame to move visualization more easily. By clicking on it and
keeping the mouse button pressed, you may drag it as you wish.
Basic Use
This chapter provides more detailed information about how to use application, scan
patterns automatically, use the zoom to check pattern detection and save the scanned file.
To facilitate the use of the software, you can follow the basic steps below for using
the system and getting the first scanned patterns.
1. Open photos
To open the photos downloaded from the camera onto Audaces Digiflash, just click
Open and select the photos you need to scan.
You may open multiple photos that belong to the same file in case a garment has
many patterns and in case it has not been possible to photograph the frame in one go, or
you may open multiple photos in case each photo refers to a different garment.
Selected images from non-related files:
Should the Open as composed document option be ticked, multiple selected images will
open as Composed Document. These images belong to the same garment and will be
referenced by tabs with different icons:
2. Photos Limit
When the application identifies a maximum number of pictures taken, all the tools
are disabled, preventing the capture of new images, and a warning message appears on
the screen.
This is intended to prevent the computer or the image processing from crashing.
3. Process
With just one click, you can detect the outline of patterns on paper and transform
them into elements in the computer.
4. Inconsistencies Area
It shows inconsistencies in the patterns, such as: patterns without thread direction,
unnamed patterns or open patterns.
Click on the inconsistency to fix the indicated pattern on the work area.
The Inconsistencies area also organizes inconsistencies on compound documents
in tabs. This streamlines the user's workflow.
5. Zoom Tools
Zoom is used whenever there is the need to zoom in the preview of a part of a
pattern or to view the set of patterns as a whole. This is important when checking detection
or when you need to improve the scanning of a pattern.
Zoom all
It shows the image fully as well as all patterns in it.
Zoom in
It zooms the image in.
Zoom out
It zooms the image out.
1:1 Zoom
It simulates the image's real-life size. It may present variations according to the
configurations of each monitor
It is worth stressing that for compound documents, simply save one tab in order to
save automatically all the other tabs belonging to the same group.
Automatic Detections
Audaces Digiflash identifies automatically the elements used in patternmaking
markings, such as thread and notch.
The following chapter shows the elements that can be detected automatically by the
software and the necessary tools for obtaining better results with automatic detection.
1. Thread Direction
The thread on the pattern is extremely important for the fitting and cutting stages. It
sets how the pattern will be cut on the fabric. In general, companies use arrows to indicate
that direction on patternmaking.
You may set the thread direction on the pattern. In case you cannot rotate the
pattern, leave the arrow only on one of the ends of the thread. That can be easily edited by
selected the desired thread and modifying the thread direction marking in the Properties
Area.
When inserting the thread manually, the software helps marking the thread
accurately by 45 and 90 based on the reference element.
Digiflash
Audaces Digiflash detects automatically only the pattern outline overlooking the
notches on the outline. Even so, you may insert notches manually.
Digiflash Plus
To detect the pattern thread automatically, the thread should be indicated by the
markers (magnets). It is important to remember that the threads may be set in Edit option
> Preferences > Markers Tab.
To ensure the appropriate detection of thread on patterns, the minimum length for
threads should be of 5 cm. Threads shorter than 5 cm will not be detected automatically
which means that the user should insert them manually.
Important: The patterns enter Audaces Pattern Advanced following the thread horizontally.
Digiflash Plus
The software identifies V and I notches automatically. To be detected, notches on
the outline of patterns should be up to 10 mm large and up to 15 mm long.
Notches that have not been cut during patternmaking should be fully marked with
black-ink marker pen and follow the recommended dimensions mentioned earlier.
To edit the Type of notch, select the notch you wish to modify and select V or I in
the Properties Area.
Notches on the outline may be easily removed from the patternmaking by selecting
the notch you wish to remove and clicking the keyboard key 'Delete'.
An Internal notch may be easily removed from the patternmaking by selecting the
notch you wish to remove and pressing the keyboard key 'Delete'.
4. Internal lines
An Internal line may be used in patternmaking for different purposes, amongst
them indicating where pockets should be located, cuts and folds on the pattern.
To insert internal lines manually, use the Draw tool and just follow the outline
specified in the pattern.
To remove internal lines, just select the line you wish to remove and press the
keyboard key 'Delete'.
Custom Use
To refine scanned patterns, you may use other tools available in the application.
This chapter provides detailed information about improving scanned patterns,
inserting notches, thread direction and making good use of image information to register
detailed information in the pattern.
1. Assigning Names
You may assign a Name while scanning. Names help differentiate the different
patterns of a piece, and they normally specify the corresponding part of the piece (pocket,
lapel etc) or where it is located (front, back etc).
3. Drawing of Segments
It creates points and segments transforming them in patterns and allows you to
insert internal lines and notches in the patterns.
Auxiliary lines help guide other manufacturing sectors, such as sewing and cutting.
They may be used to specify the location pockets, pleats etc.
It allows you to create patterns that compose the image manually or close open
patterns.
Tip: By keeping the Ctrl key pressed, you may draw curves.
6. Smoothness of Curves
The Smoothness bar is in the Properties area and becomes enables every time a
Segment (one of the sides of the pattern) is selected. This tool allows the user to make
curves smoother and reduce the number of point curves of the segment by reposing so as
Manual version 5.0
7. Pattern Manipulation
The selection tool allows you to select and manipulate patterns. This all-in-one
combination of tools streamlines the workflow.
Manipulate the segments as much as needed to polish up scanned patterns or edit
small details in the pattern.
9. Text
This option allows you to insert texts in the file which will be saved in the Audaces
Apparel Patterns (.ads) format. The texts are not directly linked to a pattern and, thus, may
serve as reference for the garment or file as a whole.
11. Exporters
Audaces Digiflash exports the following file types and extensions:
HPGL (.plt)
Other Settings
It shows some settings that can be changed in the Preferences window and
provides more information in the Photography properties window.
Preferences
It sets the user preferences for scanning. It sets shortcuts to make using the
software easier.
You may configure options, such as: Pattern Names, Automatic detection,
Measurement Units, and other properties of notch detection.
You may also set shortcuts to facilitate the software use by clicking on the currently
assigned shortcut and typing in the desired shortcut.
General Tab
Patterns name provides options to specify the moment when the pattern will have
names assigned automatically, which can be after the photo processing or when
saving the file;
Measurement Units provides options for selecting the unit of measurement you
wish to work with;
Backup in this field, you should specify the folder in which the backup files should
be saved.
Tip: set a Backup folder to ensure your files have backup copies.
Notches Tab
Notch type this option allows you to set which notches will be detected based on a
specific format or to set all V or I notches to be detected
Point type by ticking this option, a control point is inserted during notch detection;
Use default size on outline notches sets the height and width of outline notches.
Each time images are processed, the notches with the specified measurements will
be detected;
Use default size on internal notches sets the height and width of internal notches.
Each time images are processed, the notches with the specified measurements will
be detected;
If the pattern does not fit into the area designated by the gray borders of the frame, do not try to superpose it onto the
template.
1. Fold the pattern in half or as many times as necessary so as to make the pattern fit
Illustration showing the insertion of a black card stock between the two parts that resulted from folding a pattern larger
than the frame.
Pattern larger than the frame, folded in half where one of the parts of the pattern is covered by the card stock.
Important: To scan large patterns, you should also use Audaces Pattern Advanced to join
the parts.
The frame should be rolled up on its larger side using the aluminum rulers attached
to the horizontal edges as a point of reference;
Spread the non-woven (or TNT) on the back of the frame;
Roll up the frame with the black part (usable one) facing inside;
Fasten the frame with Velcro;
Having rolled up and fastened the frame, put in it the storage tube.
The frame should not be fully framed in the photo. Take another photo and focus
onto the entire image;
Visual pollution around the frame: may be caused by the overwhelming presence of
noticeable objectives near the frame. Remember not to hang the frame on the wall
using sellotape. Hang it preferably on a flat wall with no special decoration, exposed
bricks, glazed tiles nor ornamental tiles, amongst others. Place the frame in a
suitable position.
In case the patterns are too close to the frame template superposing onto the
demarcated area, organize the patterns so that they are placed towards the center
of the frame.
In case the photo or place where the photo has been taken has low-light conditions,
thus, requiring you to adjust the camera settings: check your digital camera settings
for exposure compensation and white balance; check whether the camera flash has
been activated. In case you have adjusted your camera settings manually, the
shutter speed of the digital camera might be too slow (e.g.: 1/500).
Granularity in the image: this may happen due to an increase of ISO sensitivity;
check whether the camera has ISO settings higher than 100, and, if so, adjust your
camera settings once again and take another photo.
The image is out of focus: images with no sharpness will not be processed by the
software or may result in lack of precision. Check your digital camera settings and
take another photo.
Even though the number of patterns does not affect the software operation, one of
the patterns might be hampering with the detection of the template. In that case,
reduce the number of patterns on the frame and try again.
The software has detected fault on the frame and the patterns have
been deformed during automatic scanning.
The frame might be unclean. In that case: use a water-damp cloth to clean the
frame. Do not use solvents or any abrading agent. Those agents may damage the
frame permanently.
In case the patterns have been attached to the frame with sellotape or pins, remove
them as they may damage pattern detection.
The patterns may not adhere to the frame, in case the patterns or part of them are
far from the frame. After scanning, they may be deformed, and, for that reason, the
patterns must be placed adequately so that they adhere well to the frame.
The patterns might be further away from the frame template than the minimum
allowed distance superposing onto the demarcated area.
The distance between the magnets and the edge of the patterns might be shorter
than the minimum required distance.
The camera exposure compensation might be too high, which will make the image
fall short of contrast between the patterns and the frame and will deform the
patterns.
The image might be out of focus: blurry images will not be recognized by the
application and might damage the detection of pattern outlines. Check your digital
camera settings and take another photo. Consult the manufacturer manual of your
digital camera.
The frame might have been damaged: the frame, like any other physical object,
needs to be carefully handled, therefore, do not drop it abruptly or submit it to high
pressure or high temperature conditions. In case your frame has been damaged,
contact Audaces Support.
Check the image's sharpness: go to the folder where the photos to be scanned
have been saved and find the faulty one. Use any image editor software, such as
MS-Paint (available in any Windows version) or image viewer alike, and magnify the
image. Try to check whether the pattern outlines and frame template are sharp
enough.
The photos you have taken can also be verified by Audaces Digiflash. Every time
the application detects some inadequate property, it will ask you whether you wish
to keep using that photo or whether you prefer to check your camera settings and
take another photo.
In case the quality of the patterns is unsatisfactory, check the image sharpness
using the software zoom tools. Magnify the image so that you can see whether the
pattern outlines are sharp. In case the photo is not as sharp as expected, review
your camera settings and try again.
