time of uproar, turmoil, and disorder. Lincoln's distinctively human and humane
personality and historical role as savior of the Union and emancipator of the slaves
creates a legacy that endures. His eloquence of democracy and his insistence that
the Union was worth saving embody the ideals of self-government that all nations
strive to achieve.

incapable of doing wrong. Lincoln was very much aware of his weakness as a

Abraham Lincoln was born February 12, 1809, on the Sinking Spring Place, a farm
three miles south of Hodgenville, Kentucky. Abraham Lincoln was born in humble
surroundings, a one-room log cabin with dirt floors in Hardin County, Kentucky. At
this point of time, the United States of America had just begun to emerge as a
cohesive and strong nation.

Lincolns formal schooling was limited to three brief

periods in local schools, as he had to work constantly to support his family. The
federal government as it is known today had been organized just over twenty years before.
