This issue we are celebrating

two extremely important days
in the yearly calendar. 2 May
is the official worldwide Harry
Potter Day and 4 May is May
the 4th be with you, the official
Star Wars day. So as Editor of
this great magazine I declare
April and May to be the official
Sunshine Coast Libraries
Wizards vs Dark Lord months.
To get you into the spirit of things
we have loads of magic and
space stuff including an article
about the extremely talented
Jeffrey Brown on page 10. We
have a great Star Wars inspired
code you have to break and
of course all things related to

our favourite Harry Potter. Theres

quizzes, great craft books to read
and inspire you, jokes and movies
you need to see.
Although it has nothing at all to do
with wizards or Dark Lords weve
found an Andy Griffiths 26-Storey
Treehouse puzzle for you because
hey, its Andy Griffiths and the stage
play is actually coming to Nambour
in July.
Happy reading and may the force
or magic be with you.

Picking up where the 13-Storey

Treehouse left off, the show
must go on. Even if it requires a
treehouse, a sick shark, a pirate
ship, and a cannon.

Trivia time

Harry Potter vs Darth Vader

Weve done the research and here are some fun facts about
all things Harry Potter and Star Wars you can learn to impress
your friends and family.

Harry Potter

Star Wars and Darth Vader

JK Rowling and Harry Potter

share the same birthday:
31 July

The Jawa language is based

on a sped-up version of the
Zulu language.

JK Rowling filled five notebook

pages with made up Q words
before she came up with
Quidditch

Yodas species has never been

named so we dont know if
hes a hybrid turtle or a short
green gremlin oh wait
wrong movie!

Contrary to popular belief, the

t at the end of Voldemort is
silent. The name comes from
the French words meaning
flight of death.
Robbie Coltrane, the actor
who played Hagrid in the films,
has gotten a mini-fan and a
fruit bat stuck in his famous,
shaggy beard.
When Harry Potter and the
Prisoner of Azkaban was
released in Great Britain, the
publisher asked stores not to
sell the book until schools were
closed for the day to prevent
truancy.

No physical clone trooper

outfits were actually produced
for the films. Every clone
trooper seen in the Star
Wars films was created with
computer generated imagery.

The first Harry Potter title was

published over 17 years ago.

Every Star Wars film has been

released the week after George
Lucas birthday on May 14.

Lukes lightsaber in Star Wars:

Episode VI Return of the
Jedi was originally going to be
blue to match the lightsaber
he lost in the previous film, but
George Lucas was worried that
it would confuse audiences,
and thought a green lightsaber
would look better, so he made
the change.

Sunshine Coast Libraries Kids News Issue one 2015

The first Star Wars movie was

released in 1977 almost 38
years ago.

A lightsaber is the weapon of choice for all Jedi knights

in the Star Wars universe. Usually its made of metal and
an energy blade that hums and is pretty deadly.

Make a lightsaber

Watch it!

Weve found the perfect, kid safe lightsaber instructions to make

so you, your brothers and sisters and the whole family can play
Jedi safe. Its cheap and you can make two for the price of one.

Did you know lots and lots

of movies are based on
books or comics? This is an
awesome thing as it means
you can read and watch your
favourite characters or story
over and over again.

Step one
Your materials
Pool noodle any colour
but we like the old school
blue or green (like the
original movie) or if you
want to play a baddy
Sith go for red
Silver duct tape
Black electrical tape
Sharp knife to be wielded
by a grownup Jedi.

Warning
Play Jedi safe and no head
hits! Also the family dog might
find the lightsaber fascinating
and try to eat it so keep it out
of reach of all furry beings
especially Ewoks.

Other stuff
You can change the colours
of the tape to decorate the
handle of the lightsaber.
For example swap them
around and use the black
electrical tape to create the
handle and the silver duct
tape to decorate it.

Enlist the aid of your grownup

Jedi and get them to cut the
pool noodle in half.

Step two
Carefully wind the silver duct
tape from the bottom of the
noodle to completely cover
about a quarter of it. This is
the handle of your lightsaber.

Step three

Here are a few movies that

are now on or coming soon
to your local cinema.

March
Home
Cinderella
Shaun the sheep

April

Starting from top of the silver

duct tape and working your way
down the handle, wrap three
rings of black electrical tape
around the noodle. See if you
can space them evenly.

Spongebob Squarepants:
Spongebob out of water
Book of life
Tinkerbell: legend of the
Neverbeast
Tomorrowland

Step four

June

Cut two pieces of duct tape and

stick them lengthways to the
bottom of the handle (under the
black rings) these are your on/
off buttons. You can use red and
green tape if you prefer.

Jurassic World
Minions

Step five
Challenge your family to a
lightsaber duel out of the pool,
as the tape may come off!

While you are

waiting why not

DVDs we stock?

releases to the
really old classics

The people who know the

most about space travel all
work for National Aeronautics
and Space Administration
(NASA). NASA is a United
States government agency
that is responsible for science
and technology related to air
and space. The Space Age
started a long, long time ago
in 1957 with the launch of
the Soviet satellite Sputnik.
Since then man has walked
on the moon, space shuttles
have travelled through space
heaps and since 2000 there
is even an International
Space Station. The ISS is
where astronauts from all
over the world live and work
for months at a time. And not
to mention the space probes
that have visited every planet
in the Solar System.
While space travel like in Star
Wars is still a long way off
you can still have adventures
from Earth by visiting the
NASA kids site.

Here you can learn heaps
more, follow their current and
future missions and print off
loads of activity sheets.

Darth Vader is a dad like any

Vaders Little Princess

Sunshine Coast Libraries Kids News Issue one 2015

Its bedtime in the Star Wars

galaxy, and Darth Vaders
parenting skills are tested anew.
In this Episode, the Sith Lord
must soothe his rambunctious
twins, Luke and Leiawho are
not ready to sleep and who
insist on a story. As Vader reads,
the book looks in on favourite
creatures, droids, and characters,
such as Yoda, R2-D2, Han Solo,
Chewbacca, Darth Maul, Admiral
Ackbar, Boba Fett, and many
others as they tuck in, yawn
and settle down to dream.
