longingforachildgrewintenseandthusshemadeasincereprayer
toAllah(God)tograntheranoffspring.Inthatprayershemadea
promisetoAllahthatifHegaveheranoffspring,shewould
dedicateherchildtoHisworshipandintakingcareoftheholy
placesinBaytAlMaqdis.Hannahsprayerswereaccepted,and
soonshebecamepregnant.TheQurannarratesherresponsein

offspringfromShaitan(Satan),theoutcast.

AfterthebirthofMaryam,Hannahdecidedthatshewouldfulfillher
promiseandgivethenewlybornchildtotheserviceofBaytAl
Maqdis.TheQuranrecordedthiseventinthefollowingverse:

newsofthepastnationsofwhichyouhavenoknowledge)
whichWerevealtoyou(OMuhammad)Youwerenotwith
them,whentheycastlotswiththeirpensastowhichof
themshouldbechargedwiththecareofMaryam(Mary)
norwereyouwiththemwhentheydisputed
Quran(SurahAaleImran,Verse44).
IbnKathirexplainstheabovementionedversebystatingthewhole
storyindetailasdescribedbelow:
MaryamsmotherleftwithMaryam,carryingherinher
infantcloth,andtookhertotherabbisfromtheoffspringof
Aaron,thebrotherofProphetMoses.Theywere
responsiblefortakingcareofBaytAlMaqdis(theMasjid)at
thattime,justastherewerethosewhotookcareofthe
Kaabah(inMakkah).Maryamsmothersaidtothem,Take
thischildwhomIvowedtoservetheMasjid,Ihavesether
free,sincesheismydaughter,fornomenstruatingwoman
shouldentertheMasjid,andIshallnottakeherback
home.Theysaid,SheisthedaughterofourImam,as
Imranusedtoleadtheminprayer,whotookcareofour
sacrificialrituals.Zakariyyasaid,Givehertome,forher
maternalauntismywife.Theysaid,Ourheartscannot
bearthatyoutakeher,forsheisthedaughterofourImam.

IbnKathiralsogivesanaccountofthelotteryasfollows:
RabbiswentintotheJordanRiverandconductedalottery
there,decidingtothrowtheirpensintotheriver.Thepen
thatremainedafloatandidlewouldindicatethatitsowner
wouldtakecareofMaryam.Whentheythrewtheirpensinto
theriver,thewatertookallthepensunder,except
Zakariyyaspen,whichremainedafloatinitsplace.
Zakariyyawasalsotheirmaster,chief,scholar,Imamand
Prophet,mayAllahspeaceandblessingsareonhimand
therestoftheProphets
(KathirI.,TafsirIbnKathir,p.763).
Thus,MaryamcameundertheguardianshipofProphetZikariyya
(Zechariah).

modest,honorable,innocent,anddedicatedtohertaskofworship.
ThefollowinghadithbyProphetMuhammad(Pbuh)showsthe
extentofMaryamsdedicationtoherworship:
Thebestwoman(inhertime)wasMaryam,daughterof
Imran,andthebestwoman(oftheProphetstime)is
Khadijah(hiswife),daughterofKhuwaylid(KathirI.,Tafsir
IbnKathir,p.763).
MaryamspietydidnotremainunobservedbyZakariyya.According
totheQuran,wheneverZakariyyawenttovisitMaryam,hefound
herwithfoodandsuppliesandhewonderedaboutitssourceand
askedheraboutittowhichsheusedtorespondthatthefoodcame
fromAllah.TheQuranconfirmsthisthroughthefollowingverse:

(Allah,byworshippingnonebutHimAlone)andprostrate
yourself,andIrkai(bowdown)alongwithArRakiun(those
whobowdown).

Maryamcouldnotfullycomprehendorinterpretthemeaningofthis
news.Butsoonshefoundoutthatshewaspregnant.This
astonishedherbecauseshehadneverbeentouchedbyaman.
ThisobviouslyupsetMaryamgreatlyandtoavoidany
embarrassmentshewithdrewfromherfamilyandthepublicseye
andwenttoaplaceeastofJerusalem.ItwasherethatAllah(God)
sentangelJibrail(Gabriel)intheformofaman.ThismadeMaryam

saidnothingandpointedtothechild.Thisfurtherconfusedthe
peoplebecausetherewasnopointinaskinganinfantabouthis

Oneday,AllahsenttheangelJibraeel(Gabriel)toMaryam(Mary)
togiveherthenewsaboutthebirthofachildnamedEesa(Jesus),
whowouldlaterspeakfromthecradle.Thispieceofnewsshocked
theVirginMary,whoquestionedhowitwaspossibleforhertohave
achildwhennomanhadevertouchedher(Quran19:20).Tothis,
AllahrepliedthatwhateverHewills,happens(Quran19:21).Thus,
shewithdrewfrompeopletohideherpregnancyandwhenshe
finallydeliveredthebaby,shewascommandedbyAllahtogoback
toJerusalemwiththebaby.
WhenMaryam(Mary)wasreproachedbypeopleforcommittinga
sin,shepointedtowardsthebabywhospokethathewasappointed
asaprophetbyAllah(Quran19:3033).
SpeakingfromthecradlewasJesusfirstmiraclesbutitwas
intentionallykeptsecretbymanyJewsofthetime.Thisisbecause
theyfearedthatthesonofMarycouldbeanimpendingthreatto
Judaism.Therefore,insteadofbelievinginthemiracleofAllah,they
accusedherofagreatmisdeedandhidthistruthfromtherestof

shereachedAlMarwah(forthelasttime)sheheardavoiceand
sheaskedherselftobequietandlistenedattentively.Sheheardthe
voiceagainandsaid,O(whoeveryoumaybe)!Youhavemademe
hearyourvoicehaveyougotsomethingtohelpme?Andbehold!
ShesawanangelattheplaceofZamzam,diggingtheearthwith
hisheel(orhiswing),tillwaterflowedfromthatplace.Shestartedto
makesomethinglikeabasinaroundit,usingherhandsinthisway
andstartedfillingherwaterskinwithwaterwithherhands,andthe
waterwasflowingoutaftershehadscoopedsomeofit.The
Prophetadded,MayAllhbestowmercyonIsmails(Ishmael)
mother!HadshelettheZamzam(flowwithouttryingtocontrolit)(or
hadshenotscoopedfromthatwater)(tofillherwaterskin),
Zamzamwouldhavebeenastreamflowingonthesurfaceofthe
earth.TheProphetfurtheradded,Thenshedrank(water)and
suckledherchild.Theangelsaidtoher,Dontbeafraidofbeing
neglected,forthisistheHouseofAllhwhichwillbebuiltby
thisboyandhisfather,andAllhneverneglectsHispeople.
TheHouse(i.e.Kabah)atthattimewasonahighplaceresembling
ahillock,andwhentorrentscame,theyflowedtoitsrightandleft.
ShelivedinthatwaytillsomepeoplefromthetribeofJurhumora
familyfromJurhumpassedbyherandherchild,asthey(i.e.the

waterinthisvalley.Theysentoneortwomessengerswho
discoveredthesourceofwater,andreturnedtoinformthemofthe
water.So,theyallcame(towardsthewater).TheProphetadded,
Ismails(Ishmael)motherwassittingnearthewater.Theyasked
her,Doyouallowustostaywithyou?Shereplied,Yes,butyou
willhavenorighttopossessthewater.Theyagreedtothat.The
Prophetfurthersaid,Ismails(Ishmael)motherwaspleasedwith
thewholesituationassheusedtolovetoenjoythecompanyofthe
people.So,theysettledthere,andlaterontheysentfortheir
familieswhocameandsettledwiththemsothatsomefamilies
becamepermanentresidentsthere.Thechild[i.e.Ismail(Ishmael)]
grewupandlearnedArabicfromthemand(hisvirtues)caused
themtoloveandadmirehimashegrewup,andwhenhereached
theageofpubertytheymadehimmarryawomanfromamongst
them.
AfterIsmails(Ishmael)motherhaddied,Ibrhm(Abraham)came
afterIsmails(Ishmael)marriageinordertoseehisfamilythathe
hadleftbefore,buthedidnotfindIsmail(Ishmael)there.Whenhe
askedIsmails(Ishmael)wifeabouthim,shereplied,Hehasgone

restrained,taciturn,deepthinking,andheneversleptduringthe
day.Noonehadeverseenhimobservingtrivialities,orfoolishly
laughing.Hewasveryeloquentandwellversed.Hedidnotweepor
crywhenallhischildrendied.Heevenusedtofrequenttheprinces
andmenofauthoritytomediate.Themajorityofscholarsareofthe
viewthathewasawisemanandnotaprophet.Moreover,hewas
mentionedintheGloriousQuranandwashighlypraisedbyAllah
theAlmightyWhonarrateshisadvicetohisownsoninwhichthe
firstactthatheforbidsisShirk(joiningotherswithAllah.)
TheProphetofAllah(S.A.W.S)alsoreferredtoLuqmanssaying

ThenextadvicethatLuqmangivestohissonandtomankindis
takingcareofparents.Hestatestheirrightsoverthechildrenand
tellsthechildrentobekindtotheirparentseveniftheywere
polytheists.However,itisclarifiedthattheyshouldnotbeobeyedif
theyareinvitingtopolytheism.Thisisfollowedby:Omyson!Ifit
be(anything)equaltotheweightofagrainofmustardseed,
andthoughitbeinarock,orintheheavensorintheearth,
Allahwillbringitforth.Verily,AllahisSubtle(inbringingout
thatgrain),WellAware(ofitsplace),i.e.,heforbidswrongtothe
peopleevenintheslightestway,forAllahwillbringitforthandbring
himtoaccountontheDayofResurrection.
AbuSaidAlKhudrireportedProphetMuhammad(S.A.W.S)as
saying:Ifanyofyouperformsdeedsinasolidrockthathasno
doororhole,hisdeeds,whatevertheyare,willcomeout(tothe
public).

resentit).Then,headvisedhimtoobservepatience,saying:and
bearwithpatiencewhateverbefallsyou,fortheenjoiningof
whatisgoodandforbiddingtheevil,willprobablyearnenmityfrom
thosewhoresentbeingcorrected(but,thefinalrewardformAllah
wouldsurelybehis).Verily,thesearesomeoftheimportant
commandments(orderedbyAllahwithnoexemption).Luqman
warnshissonagainstthesinofpride:Andturnnotyourface
awayfrommenwithpride,cautioningagainstbeingshowyor
arrogant.Further,theadviceregardingonesbearingis:norwalk
ininsolencethroughtheearth.Verily,Allahlikesnotany
arrogantboaster.
Luqmanthenadviseshissontobemoderateinhiswalking:And
bemoderate(orshownoinsolence)inyourwalking,andlower
yourvoice,i.e.,ifyoutalk,donotraiseyourvoiceveryloudly
becausethebrayingoftheassistheharshestofallvoices.
AbuHurairah(MayAllahbepleasedwithhim)narrated:The
Prophet(S.A.W.S)said:Whenyouhearthecrowingofcocks,
askforAllahsBlessingsfor(theircrowingindicatesthat)they
haveseenanangel.Andwhenyouhearthebrayingof
donkeys,seekrefugewithAllahfromSatanfor(theirbraying
indicates)thattheyhaveseenaSatan(transmittedbyImamAl
BukhariinhisSahih).

AbuAsSamadreportedtousthatMalikIbnDianrsaid:Ifound
somepiecesofwisdomasfollows:AllahAlmightyscatters
andwastesthebonesofthosewhogivereligiousopinions
thatgowiththepeopleslustsanddesires.And,Thereis
nogoodforyouthatyoulearnsomethingnewwhileyoudo
notpracticewhatyouhavelearnedpreviously.Thisislikea
manwhogatheredapileofdrywood,thentriedtocarryit
butcouldnt.Thereupon,hecollectedasecondone.

Itisastoryillustratingthefateofthosewhotriedtoattackthe
Kaaba.Theincidentissupposedtohavetakenplacejustbefore
thebirthofProphetMuhammad(S.A.W.S).
BeforeProphetMuhammad(S.A.W.S)wasborn,thegovernorof
Abyssinia,AbrahaAlAshram,hadbuiltaplaceofworshipand
askedallArabstoworshipthere.Thissitewasrichlydecoratedwith
treasuresfromthecollectionofBilquis,QueenofSaba.Heerected
goldandsilvercrosses,builtebonyandivorypulpits,andraisedthe
sitesstatureandexpandeditswidth.ButtheArabsrefusedtobow
down.TheirloyaltylaywiththeKaaba,builtbyIbrahim(alaihis
salam).AnArab,indefianceandmockeryofAbrahascommand,
desecratedattheplaceofworship,angeringhimsomuchthathe
sworetodestroytheKaaba.TheAbyssnianshadtameelephants
thattheyusedinwars.Abrahagatheredhisarmyofmenand
elephantsandmarchedtowardsMakkah.Asheadvancedtowards
theKaaba,hedefeatedthetribes,enslavingthepeopleandseizing
theirproperty.Includedinthisweretwohundredcamelsthat
belongedtoAbdulMuttalibIbnHashim,theProphetsgrandfather,
whowasthen,theleaderoftheQuraish.ThetribesofQuraish,

Abraha,meanwhile,sentamessengertotheQuraish,whowere
takingcareoftheKaaba.Inhismessage,Abrahadeclaredthathe
hadcomeonlytodestroytheSacredHouseandwouldntharm
anyoneunnecessarily.Hesaidthatifthepeopledidntwanttofight,
theirleadershouldcomeandmeetAbraha.AbdulMuttalib,after
listeningtothemessage,said:ByAllah!Wedonotintendto
fight.Reallywecannotaffordit.ThisistheSacredHouseof
AllahandHisKhalil(friend)Ibrahim(alaihissalaam).HeAlone
canprotectitifHewillsto.
ThemessengerthentookhimtoAbraha.AbdulMuttalibwasa
dignifiedlooking,handsomeman.Hisnobleappearanceimpressed
Abraha.Hedidnotwanttoinsulthim,nordidhewanttogivea
potentialenemyanequalstatus,soAbrahasatdownontherich
carpetbesideAbdulMuttalib.Throughaninterpreter,Abrahaasked
whatthechiefoftheQuraishwanted.AbdulMuttalibaskedfora
compensationforthetwohundredcamelsthatweretakenfromhim
anddidnotsayawordabouttheexpectedattackontheKaaba.
WhenAbrahaexpressedsurprise,AbdulMuttalibanswered:Iam
themasterofthecamels,whereastheKabahhouseof
worshiphasitsLordtodefendit.
Abraha,arrogantlyclaimedthatnoonecoulddefendtheKaaba

oftheKabahsdoor,invokedAllahandsoughtHisaidagainst
Abrahaandhistroops.
AbdulMuttalibsetoutwithalltheQuraishtothemountainsseeking
shelterandwaitingtoseewhatwouldhappennext.Thenext
morning,Abrahapreparedhimself,histroopsandhiselephant,
Mahmoud,toenterMecca.WhenMahmoudwasdirectedtowards
Makkah,NufailIbnHabibcamenearhimandwhisperedinhis
ear:KneeldownMahmoudandgobackhomesafe,youarein
AllahsSacredTown.Heletgohisearandtheelephantkneeled
down.NufailIbnHabibthenwentawayandclimbedupthemount
tillhewasfarandsafe.TheAbyssinianstriedeverythingtomake
theelephantstandagainbutinvain.Theybeathim,hurthimwith
weaponsbutstilltheelephantrefusedtogetupandmarchtowards
Makkah.Whiletryingtogethimtostandtheyturnedhisdirectionto
Yemenandheimmediatelygotreadytomove.Similarlyhewas
readytogotoSham(Syria)butstillrefusedtobudgeinthedirection
oftheKaaba.AllahtheAlmightythensentbirdsfromtheseaside
thatresembledhawks.Eachbirdheldthreestones:oneinitsbeak
andoneinitseachleg.Thebirdsdroppedthesestonesonthe
Abyssinianskillingthem.SomeAbyssiniansfledwhiledeath

peoplewhathadhappenedtothemandtothewholearmy.

QuraishofAllahsFavorbestowedonthemthroughdefeatingthe
Abyssiniansanddefyingthem:

whichAllahtheAlmightymadeHisSacredHousevictoriousforHe
wantedtograntithonor,dignity,purificationandrespectthrough
sendingHisMessengerMuhammad(S.A.W.S)andtheLegislation
Hesentwithhim.OneofthefundamentalpillarsofthisLegislation
isthePrayerwhoseQiblahdirectionwouldbemadetothe
honorableKabah.Thedestructionoftheownersoftheelephant
wasnotforthesakeoftheQuraishitesthemselvesbutvictorywas
grantedtotheSacredHouseinpreparationfortheadventof
ProphetMuhammad(S.A.W.S).
FollowingthedeathofAbrahaandhissucceedingtwosons,the
AbyssinianruleoverYemencametoanendthechurchbuiltby
Abrahawasdeserted.Noonecouldevenapproachitforitwasbuilt
overtheburialplaceoftwoidolsthatofKuaibandhiswife.The
twoidolsweremadeofwood,theirheightwasaboutsixtycubits
andtheyweretouchedwiththejinn.Hencenoonecouldtakethe
riskofcomingnearthechurchortakinganythingofitsbuildingor
ornamentsfearingtheevilsofthejinn.Itstayeddesertedtillthetime
ofthefirstAbbasideCaliph,AsSaffahwhoheardabouttheriches

themtheirfatherhadbeenarighteousman,andAllahintendedto
safeguardtheirtreasure.Buildingthewallensuredthatthetreasure
wouldbeprotectedtilltheyreachedmaturity.AlKhidrconcluded
thathehadnotdoneanythingofhisownaccordbuthad
followedAllahsinstructions.
TheaboveincidentisexplainedinSurahAlKahf,verses,6082.
InspiteofrepeatedremindersfromKhidr,andassurancesfrom
MosesthathewouldbepatientandnotquestionanyofKhidrs
actions,Mosesforgothispromiseanddemandedimmediate
explanationsforactionsthatseemedtohimunjustandinexplicable
atthemoment.
Wecanlearnfromthisincidentabouttheweaknessofhumanmind
andlimitationsofhumanunderstanding.Theexampleshouldmake
usrememberandresolvenevertohaveanymisgivings,surpriseor
regretsaboutoccurrencesinourlifethatmighttemporarily
inconvenienceusorthwartourdesires.Afterall,itisAllahWho
KnowswhatsbestforusandHe,TheMostMerciful,plans
everythingforourbenefitwhichisnotimmediatelyvisibletous.

Salaam(mayAllahbepleasedwithhim)whowasablessed
CompanionofProphetMuhammad(S.A.W.S.).
AccordingtoAbdullahibnSalaam,ZaidibnSu`nahreportsthat
oncetheMessengerofAllah(S.A.W.S.)tookaloanfromZaidto
helpotherpeopleinthecityandpromisedtopayitonacertain
date.Twoorthreedaysbeforetheduedate,ZaidibnSunah
approachedtheMessengerofAllah(S.A.W.S.)whowas
accompanyingAbuBakr,Umar,Uthman(mayAllahbepleasedwith
them),andanumberofothercompanionstoofferafuneralprayer.
Aftertheprayers,ZaidibnSunahcametotheprophet(S.A.W.S.),
grabbedhimbyhisshirtandcloak,andlookedathimangrilyand

youradvicetopayoffhisloanwell,andyouradvicetodealwithhim
courteously.GowithhimOUmar,payoffhisloan,andgivehim
twentyextrasaa`(~44kilograms)ofdatesbecauseyoufrightened
him.
Thus,UmartookZaidibnSunah,paidoffhisdebt,andgavehiman
extratwentysaa`ofdates.Zaidthenaskedhimforthereasonof
theincreaseandUmarrepliedthattheMessengerofAllah(peace
andblessingsbeuponhim)hadorderedtogiveitbecauseUmar
hadscaredZaid.

poundedbywavesonallsides,andtheywereatriskofdrowning,
theydrewlotstodecidetothrowsomeoneoutoftheshipinan
efforttolightentheload.TheProphetofAllah,Yunus(peacebe
uponhim),lostthedrawthreetimes.However,thepeopleofthe
shipdidnotwanttothrowhimoutoftheship.So,hetookoffhis
garmentsothathecouldthrowhimselfintothesea,andtheytried
tostophim.Allahsays:

Thenhe(agreedto)castlots,andhewasamongthe
losers.(SurahAsSaaffaat37:141).
Afterhethrewhimselfintothesea,AllahsentfromtheGreenSea
accordingtowhatIbnMasudsaidalargefishwhichcleaved
theoceansuntilitcameandswallowedYunus.Allahinspiredthat
largefishnottodevourhisfleshorbreakhisbones.
Wheninthebellyofthefish,ProphetYunus(peacebeuponhim)

Themainpointis,theyreplacedguidancewithmisguidanceand
prostratedbeforethesuninsteadofAllahtheAlmighty.This
practicewasseenduringtheeraofBilqisandherancestorsand
continuedtillAllahsentoverthemafloodreleasedfromthedam.

bitterbadfruit,andtamarisks,andsomefewlotetrees.Like
thisWerequitedthembecausetheywereungrateful
disbelievers.AndneverdoWerequiteinsuchawayexcept
thosewhoareungrateful(disbelievers)(Saba,34:16,17).
ManyscholarsmentionedthattheDamofMarabwasbuilttokeep
waterbehindtwogreatmountains,andwhenthewaterrose,the
peoplebegantoplantorchardsandfruittreesandmanykindsof
vegetables.Itissaidthatthebuildingofthedamwasstartedby
SabaIbnYa`rubbuthediedbeforecompletingit.So,thetribeof
Himyarperfecteditanditwasofthespaceofonesquareleague.
Peoplewerelivinginhappinessandabundance.Qatadaandothers
said:Thewoman(fromamongthem)wouldgoputtingabasketon
herhead,anditwouldbefilledwithfresh,ripefruits,andtheysaid
thattheairtheybreathedwassocleanandpurethatneitherflies,
norharmfulgermswerefoundintheirland.AllahtheAlmighty
says:
IndeedtherewasforSaba(Sheba)asignintheirdwelling
placetwogardensontherighthandandontheleftandit
wassaidtothem:EatoftheprovisionofyourLord,andbe
gratefultoHim.AfairlandandanOftForgiving
Lord!(Saba,34:15).
And(remember)whenyourLordproclaimed:Ifyougive

severe(Ibrahim,14:7).
TheyworshippedotherthanAllahtheAlmightyanddealtwithHis
Gracearrogantly.Allahhadmadethestagesoftheirjourneyeasy
andtheyusedtotravelsafelybynightandday,buttheyaskedAllah
tomakethestagesbetweentheirjourneyslongerandseverer.
Thus,theyaskedforthegoodtobeturnedintowhatisbadlikethe
ChildrenofIsraelwhoaskedAllahtheAlmightytoturnMannaand
quailsintoherbs,cucumbers,Fum(wheatorgarlic),lentilsand
onions.Theyweredeprivedofthatgreatblessingand
comprehensivegracetheirlandwasdestroyedandthey
themselveswerescatteredallovertheglobe.AllahtheAlmighty
says:
Buttheyturnedaway(fromtheobedienceofAllah),soWe
sentagainstthemSailAl`Arim(floodreleasedfromthe
dam)(Saba,34:16).
ManyscholarssaidthatAllahtheAlmightysentmiceorratsonthe
basesofthedam,andthoughtheytriedtogetridoftheratsby
bringingcatstoeatthemup,itwasinvain.Thebasesbecamevery
weakandfinallythedamcollapsedandthewaterdrowned

Afterthedestructionoftheirgardens,propertiesandland,they
neededtomoveaway.Thus,theygotscatteredindifferentpartsof
thelandassomeofthemmovedtotheHejaz,andKhuzaahmoved
toMecca.SomeofthemalsomovedtoAlMadinahAl
Munawwarah,andtheywerethefirsttoinhabitit.Then,theywere
followedbythreetribesfromtheJews:theBanuQainuqa,Banu
Quraizah,andBanuAnNadir.TheJewsmadecoalitionswiththe
AusandKhazrajandlivedthere(tillthetimeofProphetMuhammad
(S.A.W.S)).SomeofthemmovedtoSham(Syria)andafterwards
theyconvertedtoChristianity.ThesewereGhassan,Amilah,
Bahra,Lukham,Judham,Tanukh,Taghlub,andothers.
MuhammadIbnIshaq,inhisTheProphetsBiography[KitabAs
Sirah],saidthatthefirsttoquitYemenbeforetheSailAlArim(the
floodreleasedfromthedam)wasAmrIbnAmirAlLukhami.

IbnIshaqsaidthathewastoldbyAbuZaidAlAnsarithatAmrIbn
AmirAlLukhamisawaratdiggingbeneaththedamofMaraband
realizedthatthedamwouldnotstandlong.However,hetrickedhis
peoplebyorderinghisyoungestsontoslaphimonthefacebefore
thepeople.ThesondidashewasorderedandAmrsaid:Iwill
neverliveinaplacewheremyyoungestsonslappedmeonthe
face.Andheofferedtosellhisproperty.ThenoblemenofYemen
seizedtheopportunityofAmrsrageandboughtallhisproperty.
Hence,hemovedalongwithhischildrenandtheiroffspring.The
Azdsaid:WewillnotleaveAmrIbnAmir,sotheysoldtheir
propertiesandaccompaniedhiminhisfleeing(withoutknowinghis
realintentions).Theyarrivedatthelandof`Akwhofoughtagainst
them.Finally,theydepartedfromthelandofAkanddispersedin
thelands.IbnJafnahIbnAmrIbnAmirwenttoSham(Syria),Al
AusandAlKhazrajwenttoYathrib(AlMadinahAlMunawwarah),
KhuzaahwenttoMarran,AzdAsSarahwenttoAsSarah,andAzd
AmmanwenttoAmman.ThenAllahtheAlmightysenttheflood
againstthedamanditcollapsed.TheGloriousQuranbears
witnesstothisincident.

whoforetoldthedestructionoftheircountryastheysawan
indicationintherat,andhencetheymovedaway.Allahknowsbest!
HiswholestorywasmentionedintheExegesisontheauthorityof
`IkriamhafterIbnAbuHatim.However,notallthepeopleofSaba
movedfromYemenafterthecollapsingofthedam,butthemajority
stayedthere.OnlythepeopleoftheDam(Marab)wentawayand
dispersedintheland.ItisstatedintheHadith,thatwasnarratedby
`AbdullahIbn`Abbas,thatthemajorityoftheYemenitesdidnot
movefromYemen.Onlyfourtribesquittedbutsixtribesstayed.
Theycontinuedtolivethereandkepttheirruleforaboutseventy
yearstilltheyweredeprivedoftheirownselfrulebythearmysent
bytheNegusunderthecommandofAbrahaandAryat.Then,itwas
regainedbySaifIbnDhiYazanAIHimyarishortlybeforeProphet
Muhammadsbirth.Then,AllahsProphet(Peacebeuponhim)sent
toYemen`AliIbnAbuTalibandKhalidIbnAlWalid,thenAbuMusa
AlAsh`ariandMu`adhIbnJabaltoinvitethepeopletoembrace
Islam.AlAswadAl`AnsiseizedtheYemenanddroveoutthe
deputiesofAllahsMessenger(S.A.W.S).DuringtheeraofAbu
BakrAsSiddiq,AlAswadAl`AnsiwaskilledandtheMuslimshad
theupperhandinYemen.

Verily,inthisareindeedsignsforeverysteadfast,grateful

turnthemintodisbelievers,orpolytheistsataminimum.The
mannerinwhichSatanpursuesthatgoalvariesinaccordancewith
theinterestsandinclinationsofhisvictims.Forexample,heuses
pietytoattackthepiousscholarlydisciplinestoattackscholars
falsereasoningandlogicforthosewhotakeprideinbeing
knowledgeable,andignorancetoattacktheignorant.Allah(SWT)

"...andfollownotthefootstepsofShaitan(Satan).Surelyhe
istoyouanopenenemy"(Quran,AlAnaam:142).
So,AllahhasmadeitcleartomankindthatSatanistheirenemy
andSatansgoalistodivertmankindfromthegoalthatAllah
establishedforthem,whichistofollowandworshipAllahby
obeyingHiscommands.Satansgoalistomakemankinddisobey
Allahanddivertthemtothehellfireinthehereafter,whichwillalso
beSatansabode.AllahsaysintheQuran:
Surely,Shaitan(Satan)isanenemytoyou,sotake(treat)him
asanenemy.HeonlyinviteshisHizb(followers)thattheymay
becomethedwellersoftheblazingFire(Faatir35:6).

EverythingthathappensamongthesonsofAdamofkufr(disbelief

seeyoufromwhereyoucannotseethem(Quran,AaleImran:
27).

ProvokesrebelliousnessAfterestablishingthesupremacyof
onesegoinonesheart,Satanencouragesthepersontobecome
rebelliousandtorejectthelawsandrulesestablishedbyAllahthe
AllMighty.Heleadsmentotheirsuspicion,questioningand
argumentationinsheerobduracy.Inaworldwherehuman
weaknessfromtemptationsandweaknessoffaithabound,Satan
influencesmanintoignoringandbelittlingthewordsofAllahstated

WeakensonesfaithandEemaninAlQadr(AllahsDivine
Will)BelievinginAllahswillisanintegralpartofaMuslimsfaith.
AnothercommonwayfortheSatanis,therefore,tomakeus
compareoursituationswiththosearoundusandleadsustofeeling
discontentedwithAllahswill.Satanthusdivertsourattentionfrom
acceptingthewillofAllahtofocusingonthosewhomayhavemore
ofthislifesluxuriesandthusarousingfeelingsofenvyand
jealousy.Healsopresentsthislifeasthesoleprizethatcannotbe
missedandthusinducesinusdiscontentmentwithourpresent
situationsinlife.
AsMuslims,letsensurethatwedonotletSatanplaywithour
imagination,conjuringuprosypicturesoftheunattainable,making
usvisualizewhatcouldhavebeenorshouldhavebeenourdestiny
thusweakeningourfaithinAlQadr.AsMuslims,weshouldnever

thedeedsrewardsfromAllahtoexpectingpraisetoflowfrom
peopleinstead.AsMuslims,letsnotforgetthatthepayoffthatwe
desireforourdeedsreflectsthenatureoftheintentionofdoing
thosedeeds.TheProphet(Peacebeuponhim)says:"Themost
fearfulthingIfearforyouisMinorShirk".He(Peacebeuponhim)
wasaskedaboutit,andhesaid:"Itis(ArRiya)showingoff".Then,
he(Peacebeuponhim)explaineditsaying,"Amanstandsin
prayer,performsitmorebeautifullyandproperlythanever,because
henoticessomeonelookingathim"(ImamAhmed).
Inducesconceitinapersonwhohasaccomplishmentstohis
creditSatanalsoinducesfalseconfidenceinapersonmaking
himfeelthathehasreachedperfectionorthatheisfarbetterthan

opportunitiesofdoinggooddeeds.Mostofusknowthestoryofthe
prostitutefromthenationofChildrenofIsraelwhosavedadogfrom
dyingthirstyandasaresultofthatdeedwasenteredinparadise.
Similarly,wealsoknowthestoryoftheladywhotrappedhercat
andmadeherdieofhungerandasaresultwassenttohellfire.
ThisiswhytheProphet(peaceandblessingsofAllahbeuponhim)
said,oneofyoumaydothedeedsofthepeopleofParadise
untilthereisnothingbetweenhimanditbutacubit,thenthe
decreeovertakeshimandhedoesadeedofthepeopleofHell
andentersit.Andoneofyoumaydothedeedsofthepeopleof
Helluntilthereisnothingbetweenhimanditbutacubit,then
thedecreeovertakeshimandhedoesadeedofthepeopleof
Paradise,andentersit(alBukhaari(3208)andMuslim(2643)
fromIbnMasood).
Useslazinessandprocrastinationtokeeponeawayfromgood
deedsWeshouldrealizethatwhenSatanfailstomakeusrebel
againstthekeytruthsofIslam,heusesothertacticstodistanceus
fromourbasicobligationsbyusingthetoolsoflazinessand
procrastination,andbelittlinginourmindstheimportanceofthose
obligations.Forexample,eventhoughmanyMuslimsrecognizethe
obligationtoprayregularly,theyfailtofollowthroughingetting
regularinsuchworships.InoneofthehadithsnarratedbyAbu

knotsatthebackoftheheadofanyoneofyouwhenhegoes
tosleep,strikingeachknotandsaying:Youhavealongnight
ahead,sosleep.IfhewakesupandremembersAllah,one
knotisundone.Ifhedoeswudoo,twoknotsareundone.Ifhe
prays,alltheknotsareundone,andhestartsthedayenergetic
andinagoodmood.Otherwise,hestartshisdayinabad
moodandfeelinglazy(alBukhaari(3269)andMuslim(776)).
SetsoneMuslimagainstanotherSatanworksonacommon
humanweaknessrelatedtomakingonequicklyassumesomething
negativeabouttheother.Hethusinfusessuspicionanddoubtinthe
heartsofMuslimsmakingthemthinkbadlyaboutoneanother,and
provokingthemagainstoneanother.Forexample,Satanconsiders
sowingtheseedsofdiscordbetweenahusbandandwifeasoneof
hisgreatestachievements.TheProphet(S.A.W.S)said:"Iblis
placeshisthroneuponwaterhethensendsdetachments(for
creatingdissensionbetweenpeople)thenearertohiminrankare
thosewhoaremostnotoriousincreatingdissension.Oneofthem
comesandsays:Ididsoandso.Andhesays:Youhavedone
nothing.Thenoneamongstthemcomesandsays:Ididnotspare
soandsountilIsowedtheseedofdiscordbetweenahusbandand
awife.Satangoesnearhimandsays:Youhavedonewell.He
thenembraceshim(SahihMuslimandnarratedbyJabirIbn

recommendedlawfuldeedsappearmoreinvitingthanobligatory
dutiesthuspullingthebelieversawayfromtheobligatorydutiesof
Islam.Forexample,helpingandsupportingparentsandfamily
membersismoreimportantthanhelpingfriends.Similarly,praying
thefiveobligatoryprayersincongregationismoreimportantthan
prayingTaraweehprayers.Weshould,therefore,becarefulinnot
sacrificingtheobligatorydeedsattheexpenseofthelessimportant
deeds.

what will Satan say?
So,attheendontheDayofJudgmentwhenweareallmadeto
accountforwhatwehaddoneinthislife,wewontbeabletoblame
Satanforthebaddeedsthatwedidbecauseofhowhehadincited
us.Rather,thisiswhatSatanwillsayontheDayofJudgment(as
AllahtellsusintheQuran):
AndShaitan(Satan)willsaywhenthematterhasbeen
decided:Verily,Allahpromisedyouapromiseoftruth.AndI
toopromisedyou,butIbetrayedyou.Ihadnoauthorityover

becausehewillsay,Verily,Allahpromisedyouapromiseof
truthHewillcontinuetosaylater,Idenyyourformeract

2. Satanwillmockusbypushingtheburdenbackonus.Hewould
say,Icalledyou,andyourespondedtome
3. Satanwouldnotevenaccepttheblameandinsteadwillputthe
blameonus.Hewouldsay,Soblamemenot,butblame
yourselves

The remedy ways to protect ourselves


InspiteofallthetacticsthatSatanusestomisleadmankind,heis
notabletohurtthoseofAllahsslaveswhoareawareofSatans
tactics,andusetheirdefensesprovidedthembyAllahtowardoff
thosetactics.AllahsaysintheQuran:

InalSaheehaynthereisareportwhichsupportswhathasbeen
mentionedabove,whichisthatwhoeversuffersfromwaswaas
shouldseekrefugewithAllahandturnawayfromthewaswaas.So
thinkaboutthiseffectiveremedywhichwastaughtbytheonewho
doesnotspeakofhisownwhimsanddesirestohisummah,and
understandthatwhoeverisdeprivedofthisisdeprivedofall
goodness,becausewaswasahcomesfromSatan,accordingto
scholarlyconsensus,andSatanhasnootherdesirethantomake
thebelieversgoastray,makethemconfused,maketheirlifea
misery,andcausethemdistresstotheextentthattheyleaveIslam
withoutrealizingit.
FaithandTrustinAllahAllahsaysintheHolyQuran:"Verily!
He(Satan)hasnopoweroverthosewhobelieveandputtheir

Oruleroftheland!Ahardtimehashitusandourfamily,andwehavebroughtbut
poorcapital,sopayusfullmeasureandbecharitabletous.Truly,Allahdoesreward

Noreproachonyouthisday,mayAllahforgiveyou,andHeistheMostMercifulof
thosewhoshowmercy!(Yusuf12:92)
Heembracedthem,andtogethertheyweptwithjoy.Itwasnotpossibleforhimtoleavehis
responsibleoffice,soheadvisedhisbrothers:

Gowiththisshirtofmine,andcastitoverthefaceofmyfather,hewillbecomeclear
sighted,andbringtomeallyourfamily.(Yusuf12:93)
AndsotheyreturnedtoYaqub(alaihissalam).Hestoodupallofasudden,dressedandwent
out.ThenhelifteduphisfacetoHeavenandsniffedtheair.Hissonswivesweresurprised
thathehadcomeoutofhisroomandaskedhimhowhefelt.Therewasahintofasmileon
hisface.

Theysaid:ByAllah!Certainly,youareinyourolderror.
Then,whenthebearerofthegladtidingsarrived,hecasttheshirtoverhisface,andhe
becameclearsighted.Hesaid:DidInotsaytoyou,IknowfromAllahthatwhichyou
knownot.
Theysaid:Oourfather!AskForgivenessfromAllahforoursins,indeedwehavebeen

Yusuf,havingbecomeanassettothekingdom,wasgrantedpermissionbythekingtosettle

mantoldtheProphet(S.A.W.S)thathehadseenthedamofGog
andMagog.TheProphet(S.A.W.S)asked:Howdidyoufind
it?Themansaid:IfounditlikeAlBurdAlMuhabbar(striped
garments).TheProphet(S.A.W.S)said:Youhaveseenit.
InIbnJarirsexegesisoftheQuran,itwasreportedbyQatadah
thatwhenthemantoldtheProphet(S.A.W.S)thathehadseenthe
damofGogandMagogandwasaskedtodescribeit,hesaid:It
lookedlikestripedgarments,withredandblackstripes.The
Prophet(S.A.W.S)said:Youhaveseenit.

webedestroyedeventhoughtherearepiouspersonsamongus?
Hesaid:Yes,whentheevilpersonswillincrease.Andin
anothernarrationtheProphet(S.A.W.S)said:Allahhasmadean
openinginthewalloftheGogandMagog(people)likethis,and
hemadewithhishand(withthehelpofhisfingers)(AlBukhariand
Muslim).

tomorrow.Onthenextday,theyfinditasstrongasbefore.Till
whentheirappointedtermcomesandAllahdesirestosend
themagainstmankind,theydigittilltheycouldseethesun
rays(throughit)andtheirleadersays:Gobackandyouwill
finishittomorrow,ifAllahwills!Onthenextday,theyfinditas
theyhadleftthedaybeforeandtheydigthroughitandcome
againstmankind.Theywilldrink(everydropofwatertheypass
by).Thepeoplewillresorttostrongholds.And,GogandMagog
willthrowtheirarrowstowardsthesky.Whentheycomeback
tothemstainedwithwhatlookslikeblood,theywillsay:We
havedefeatedthepeopleonearthandthoseintheheavenas
well.Then,AllahtheAlmightywillsendagainstthemwormsin
theirnecksthatwillkillthemall.AllahsMessenger(S.A.W.S)
said:ByHiminWhoseHandMuhammedssoulrests!Living
creaturesoftheearthwouldgofatandbethankfuldueto
eatingtheirfleshand(drinkingtheir)blood.(Alsotransmitted

AfterProphetJesus(Eesa)(P.B.U.H)willkilltheDajjal(AntiChrist),
Allahwillinformhimaboutthearrivalofthisdisbelievingtribethatis
undefeatedandhewilltakerefugeintheMountofTooruntilAllah
willdestroythem.
AlNawaasibnSamaan(mayAllaahbepleasedwithhim)reported
thatProphet(peaceandblessingsofAllaahbeuponhim),wile
describingthesignsoftheDayofjudgementsaid:andAllah
willsendYajoojandMajooj,swiftlyswarmingfromevery
mound.TheywillpassthelakeofTiberias[inPalestine]and
willdrinkeverythingthatisinit.Thenthelastofthemwillpass
byandwillsay,Thereusedtobewaterhereonce.The
ProphetofAllah,Eesaa,andhiscompanions,willbebesieged
untilabullsheadwillbemoreprecioustooneofthemthana
hundreddinarsaretoanyofyoutoday.Eesaaandhis
companionswillpraytoAllah,andAllahwillsendakindof
worm(likethatfoundinthenosesofcamelsandsheep)on
their(YajoojandMajooj)necks,andtheywillfalldowndead,
allatonce.ThenEesaaandhiscompanionswillcomedown
outoftheplacewheretheywerebesieged,andtheywillfind
hardlyahandspanoflandthatisnotfilledwiththestench(of
YajoojandMajooj),soEesaaandhiscompanionswillprayto
