Torque-Thru Roll-On
Coil Tubing Connector
Description
High-strength construction makes the Torque-Thru Roll-On Coil Tubing Connector
stronger than the Coiled Tubing string. Readily available O-ring seals ensure pressure
integrity of the Coiled Tubing during downhole operations. Rotational lock prevents the
connector from spinning on the Coiled Tubing when using small downhole motors or
other low- to mid-torque generating assemblies. A relatively large ID allows flow through
the connector and for the passage of plugs, darts, or setting balls. Pulling force is not
required for makeup. Reusable connectors offer multiple uses. External makeup
principle avoids major ID restriction of the coiled tubing, allowing unrestricted flow. The
roll-on connector contains no slips and is held in place by crimping the Coiled Tubing
material into mating grooves in the connector body. Reusable Roll-on connectors offer
multiple uses, and are available for all Coiled Tubing sizes and wall thickness
specifications

Operation
Prior to installing the torque-thru roll-on connector, the ID of the Coiled Tubing string
must be dressed with a reamer tool, and the end slotted to receive the anti-rotation keys
on the connector body. The surface is smoothed to provide a good seal for the O-rings.
The connector Body is then inserted and the coiled tubing deformed using a crimping
tool so it fits into the grooves of the connector Body. The Sleeve is then slipped over the
Coiled Tubing and torqued up to the Body.

Note: Unless otherwise indicated, all the strength figures given in

this manual, are the result of calculations based on the yield strength of
the material used in the manufacture of this product. These strength
calculations are considered accurate within plus or minus 20% and are
to be used only as a guide. They do not constitute a guarantee, actual
or implied. In use, appropriate allowance should be made as a safety
factor.

Torque-Thru Roll-On
CT Connector
1.0 Pre-Assembly
Warning: Make sure all tool parts and components have been
thoroughly cleaned or serious damage and/or injury could occur!

Note: Verify that the correct O-ring redress kit and quantities are
used as specified on the Bill Of Materials (for example, 5 each etc.).
Lay out all redress kit components on a clean surface.

Note: Make sure to lubricate all O-rings and threaded surfaces.

Note: Visually inspect all parts for damage or wear. Thread parts
together without the O-rings to check fit. Repair or replace damaged
parts.

Caution: Always file wrench marks or burrs and clean off

debris!

Caution: This

tool should be disassembled,

thoroughly, inspected and reassembled after each job!

cleaned

Prepping the Coil Tubing

Use the Flash Tool (or die grinder) to remove the seams within the end of the coil tubing
(CT).
Use the Milling Fixture to cut torque grooves into the CT. Insert the fixture onto the end
of the CT and use the Set Screws to secure it in place. Now using a 1/4 in. carbide end
mill and a 22,000 rpm grinder, mill the required torque grooves through the slots in the
Milling Fixture. Remove the fixture from the CT.

2.0 Assembly
2.1 Put the O-rings (item #3 and/or 4) onto the OD of the Body (item #1). Grease the
OD and ID of the Body and grease the ID of the CT.

Note: Some of the variations of the 1.750 in. tool do not use 2
different sizes of O-rings.

MAN-TTT-744 (R01)

page 11

Torque-Thru Roll-On
CT Connector
2.2 Lay the CT next to the Body, so that the torque grooves are in alignment. Now mark
on the CT where the Body roller grooves are located. Slide the CT onto the Body until
the torque grooves are aligned.
2.3 Take the cutting blade out of a pipe cutter and replace it with the Roll-on Die Wheel.
Align the modified pipe cutter with one of the marked grooves on the CT. Rotate the pipe
cutter 360 until the CT has been crimped into the Body roller groove. Repeat

process for the other 2 marks/roller grooves.

2.4 Grease the ID of the Sleeve (item #2), slide it over the Body and make wrench tight.

3.0 Disassembly
3.1 Cut the CT at least 3-4 in. (7-10 cm) above the Sleeve (item #2). Back off and
remove the Sleeve.
3.2 Use a die grinder/Dremmel with a metal cutting wheel, to make 2 vertical, 180

apart, cuts into the CT. Start the cut on one of the torque grooves of the CT and
then cut up, just past the last roller groove.

Caution: Be careful not to cut into the Body (item #1)!

3.3 After the 2 cuts have been made, use a hammer and chisel to "open up" the 2 cuts,
so that CT can be removed from the Body.

Note: Remove and discard all O-rings. Replace O-rings after each
use. Thoroughly clean tool parts in a cleaner approved by state and/or
local laws.

Note: Visually inspect tool for swelling after each use. Damaged or
swelled components must be replaced.

Note: It is recommended that a Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI)

be completed on all components after each job.
