Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater La Crosse Open New Teen

Career Center at Mathy Club, Thanks to $5,000 AT&T Donation
Part of Career Launch Program, New Center to Help
Teens Focus on Building Job Skills and Career Planning
LA CROSSE, Friday, November 13, 2015 The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater La Crosse opened a new
Teen Career Center at its Mathy Club today, thanks to a $5,000 donation from AT&T.
The AT&T donation has enabled the Mathy Club to update its technology and launch the new Teen Career
Center as part of its expanded Career Launch program. The Career Center will introduce teens at the
Mathy Club to the working world and help them develop skills essential for workforce success.
This new Career Center will not only help our teens academically, it will also them build their job skills as
they prepare to join Wisconsins workforce, said Mike Desmond, Executive Director of the Boys & Girls
Clubs of Greater La Crosse. Thanks to AT&Ts generosity, we are able to open this new Career Center to
help some of our Club teens who need it the most.
The purpose of the Career Center is to offer a variety of opportunities to assist teens with homework help,
tutoring, reading, career exploration, and college and job search activities. The new Center will also enable
the Mathy Club to put an expanded focus on its Career Launch program, which helps teens assess their
skills and interests, explore careers and make sound educational decisions.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater La Crosse play a vital role in helping our young people develop the skills
they need to be successful in our future workforce, said Senator Jennifer Shilling (D-La Crosse). This new
Career Center will help more La Crosse teens graduate from high school ready for the working world.
Afterschool programs like those run by the Boys & Girls Clubs help our young people build academic skills,
complete their homework, succeed in the classroom, and gain important job skills, said Representative Jill
Billings (D-La Crosse). This new Career Center is exciting news for the teens at the Mathy Club. With our
shrinking workforce, it is important that the next generation has the skills necessary to step into work in
promising careers.

The Career Center and Career Launch program will be available to nearly 120 teens who attend the Mathy
Club every day. The goals of the Center are to:

Help youth reach their full potential academically and have 100% of Club members graduate;

Encourage and motivate teens to pursue post-secondary education;

Help youth develop essential skills for workforce success; and

Enhance their technology skills to be better prepared for post-secondary education or careers.

AT&T is proud to support the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater La Crosses efforts to engage young people
early in career opportunities and workforce readiness, said Scott T. VanderSanden, president of AT&T
Wisconsin. As a company, we are committed to education and workforce development, and this program is
a great way to support both.
As a company, AT&T has a long-standing commitment to helping advance education. The company invests
in education through donations to local organizations and through the AT&T Aspire program. AT&T Aspire
is one of the nations largest corporate initiatives committed to helping more students graduate from high
school ready for college and careers.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater La Crosse has served the youth of the La Crosse area for 50 years. The
mission of the Clubs is to inspire and empower all young people, especially those who need the Club the
most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. The Club has nearly 4,000
members and serves 500-600 youth daily at 7 sites.
