Veterans honored during KML program

BY THOMAS J. MCKILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR

The message to Veterans during a program at Kettle Moraine Lutheran High

School Nov. 5 was straightforward: Thank
you.
"We humbly thank you and your families for your sacrifice and service to the
United States, the greatest country in the
world," school Principal Jamie Luehring
said at the start of the 12th annual program. "We thank you for the freedom you
have defended and won for us."
Luehring then asked Veterans in attendance to stand, with students offering
applause in response.
"Thank you, our honored guests, for
being with us. It is important we do honor
you and we thank God for each and every
one of you. It's important that we continue to educate our young people about the
sacrifice you have done for this great
country," Luehring said.

The presentation of the colors by the

Staff Sgt. Henry F. Gumm American Legion
Post in Jackson, the Vietnam Veterans of
America Chapter 448 and Combined West
Bend Color Guard followed. The KML Wind
Symphony then performed the StarSpangled Banner.
In a message for the program, Pastor
Timothy Bauer of Bethany Lutheran
Church in Hustisford spoke of the freedoms
protected by Veterans.
"Above all, I owe it to the great and
glorious God who made men and women to
be people who left their homes to fight for
flag and country to preserve our freedoms," Bauer said.
Bauer recalled veterans such his father,
who served in the Army Air Corps in Africa
and Italy during World War II, and a childhood friend from Bismarck, ND who was
killed in a helicopter crash in Vietnam.
"On Veterans Day we honor all veterans

who served and are serving our country," Bauer said.

A prayer was then offered, with the
audience joining in reading the prayer.
"Thank you so much for veterans
who have given so much that we can
live in freedom. Thank you for the men
and women who are currently serving in
our armed forces. Protect them, Lord,
and be with the ones who look forward
to their return home," attendees stated
in a portion of the prayer.
A ceremony showing the folding of
an American flag followed. According to
the program for the ceremony, the flag
being used was presented to the family
of SPC 5 Stanley Hansen, U.S. Army 815
Engineer Battalion, after he was killed
in action in Vietnam in 1970. (Stanley
Hansen is the brother of Kettle Moraine
Lutheran High School Business Manager
Jody Hansen).
The program then held a recognition
of the Normandy Invasion which included Wallace (Wally) Ritterbusch of West
Bend, who piloted two landing crafts to
the troops of Omaha Beach on D-Day;

and 2011 Kettle Moraine Lutheran graduate Jessie Sierra of Jackson, who was
involved in the 70th anniversary jump
over Normandy in 2014. Michael Riebe
of the Henry F. Gumm American Legion
Post in Jackson noted that Veterans
don't often talk about their experiences
in war.
"Wally's only comment about that
terrible day: It was horrific," Gumm said.
A moment of silence was then held, followed by Taps.
"Be with all our Veterans, those who
have served, those who are now serving
in the armed forces. Prepare them well
for the work that they must do,"
Chaplain Paul Lober said prior to the
moment of silence. "Give them courage,
strength, endurance as they travel by
land, sea, or air. If they must serve far
from home and their loved ones, cheer
them with the assurance of your presence. If they must face combat, spare
their lives."
The KML Wind Symphony Concert,
Women's and Kantorei Choirs then performed "Within These Hallowed Halls."
Toward the end of the program, Gov.
Scott Walker, spoke about freedoms
American citizens have and how
Veterans have protected those freedoms.
Walker noted that several Wisconsin
National Guard members have been
deployed around the world. Walker said
that he gives the commanding officer of
the troops being deployed a Wisconsin
flag. He explained the presentation of
the state flag is related to the Civil War,
when Wisconsin soldiers asked for something to remind them of home.
Walker noted that during the Civil
War, the state of Wisconsin had approximately 775,000 residents yet sent
71,000 soldiers to fight during the war.
"The reason I give that flag to the
commanding officer to the units we
deploy is not only to remind them of the
thoughts and the prayers from their
loved ones and their family and those
folks here in Wisconsin they don't even
know, but it's also to remind them that
they come from a tremendous heritage
that goes all the way back to the Civil
War," Walker said. "A heritage of
courage, devotion, dedication."

Dear Dr. Winter, I have been told by my

dentist to have laser surgery to fix my gum
disease. Can you comment on whether this is
safe and if it is better than the deep cleanings I
have been getting for years?
Dear Jan, we now have a CO2 Superpulsed
laser at Hampton Dental Associates. The CO2
laser is the most widely studied laser on the
market today with the most University
supported articles outlining their safety and
effectiveness. I can tell you that lasers are
wonderful tools in dentistry if they are used
correctly. The ADA Council on Scientific
Affairs has recently published a position paper
on lasers and how they are used in dentistry.
Some of the salient points of their paper are as
follows:
There are currently more than twenty
cleared indications for use for dental lasers in
the United States.
According to the ADA position paper: The
dental literature indicates that when lasers are
used as an adjunct to meticulous root planing,
mechanical or chemical curettage (i.e., the
intentional removal of the epithelial lining of
the sulcus) (lasers) offer no consistent benefit
beyond scaling and root planing alone with
respect to gain of the periodontal attachment.
Additional clinical data from properly
designed clinical trials with adequate sample
sizes are still required before it can be known to
what extent LANAP (Laser assisted new
attachment procedures) are safe and effective
across the spectrum of patients with chronic
periodontitis.
So while lasers can be used for removing
lesions, performing frenectemies (removing
tissue that holds tongues or lips down) and
many other soft tissue applications it has not
been found to definitively treat gum disease. If
our readers wish to be seen for evaluation of

VOLLEYBALL
Living Word loses
in Division 4
state semifinal
An improbable late season run to the
state tournament came to an end for the
Living Word girls volleyball team Nov. 6,
as the Timberwolves were swept by topseeded Newman Catholic 23-25, 21-25,
15-25.
"I'm extremely proud of how we
played. Hats off to Newman Catholic -they've got a great team, a scrappy team
on defense. They made the plays they
needed to make," Living Word Coach
Dawn Walker said. "I'm just extremely
proud of my girls and how they worked
during the season. I think they proved
in the match that we deserved to be
here -- they worked hard, they were in
the right spots all the time."
Newman Catholic was led by
University of Wisconsin recruit Mariah
Wahlen, who recorded 31 kills in a
three-game match, a new state record
for the Division 4 level.
"Living Word really came and played
a great match against us," Newman
Catholic Coach Betty Lange said.
Lange added that her team was being
challenged by the Timberwolves middle
and made an adjustment in response.
Newman Catholic won the Division 4
title the next morning with a 23-25, 2519, 25-12, 25-20 win over Southwestern.
Living Word came into the tournament after a regular season which saw
the team finish fifth in Midwest Classic
Conference regular season standings and
an in-season tournament record that
included a fourth place finish at the
Random Lake Invite and a fifth place
finish at the Central Wisconsin Christian
Invite. A second place finish in the conference tournament sparked a post-season run which included upsets over seventh seeded Hilbert and two-time state
Division 4 champion Catholic Central.
In the first game of the state semifinal match Living Word jumped out to a
4-0 lead before Newman Catholic
answered with six straight points. Living
Word stayed with the Cardinals and held
a 22-20 lead after a kill attempt by
Newman Catholic went into the net. But
the Cardinals scored the next three
points to force a Living Word time out.
The Timberwolves scored one more point

before the Cardinals closed out the
match.
Newman Catholic took the early lead
early in the second game but Living
Word stayed with the Cardinals, coming
back from a 14-11 deficit to tie the score
at 15-15 on a kill by Kayli Brown. The
Timberwolves stayed with the Cardinals
and held a 21-19 lead after a tip by
Sophie Hoelz. But a kill and a block
turned the tide for the Cardinals, who
closed the second game on a block.
The Cardinals then dominated the
third game, scoring seven straight
points to take a 21-12 lead. Living Word
scored on a kill by Hoelz, an ace by
Natalie Niehueser and a kill by Keri
Walker, but Newman Catholic scored the
final point to advance to its third
straight Division 4 title match.
Walker said that her team "has been
playing with nothing to lose, because we
didn't have anything to lose. We asked
the girls to savor every moment, to soak
it all in. It was cool to walk into the
Resch Center and see all the people
there and have our fans. They've been
our number backers through regionals,
sectionals, and here at state today."
She then added: We're just extremely
blessed and thankful to be here and to
have an opportunity to play.
She then said loss would make Living
Word a better team "and an even better
program."
