COURSE OBJECTIVES AND COURSE COVERAGE


This course Project Management is designed to present the fundamentals concepts of Project
Management and how to design and evaluate a project .Topic will include concept of project and
project management; generation and screening of project ideas, project analysis-market, technical
analysis, cost benefit analysis, network techniques for project management, and managing project
in Bangladesh.

The following schedule provides a broad outline of the course and a general order in which the
topics will be discussed in the class.

Introduction: Definition of project, Elements of project, General characteristics of project,
Difference between project management and process, Difference between General
management and project management, Difference between plan and project, Project life
cycle, Determinants of project success.

The organizational context: The project model, The 4 phases of Project Management, The
Project environment, Organizational strategy and project, projects reflect strategy, strategy in
organizational change project, Organizational structure, Organizational culture and project
management.
Project proposal and Analysis: project proposal, Feasibility study.
Project selection: Project selection, Project selection models, Criteria for selecting project
appraisal model, Approaches to project screening and selection: Checklist model, Scoring
models, Analytical Hierarchy process, Profile models, Financial models: PBP, NPV, IRR.
Factors affecting determining discount rate.

Risk management: define project risk, project risk management, causes of risk, risk
assessment, sensitivity analysis, difference between risk and uncertainty
Mid Term Examination
Cost estimation and Budgeting: Cost management, Direct vs Indirect cost, Fixed vs.
Variable cost, Normal vs. Expedited cost, problems with cost estimation. Budgeting: TopDown budgeting, Bottom-up Budgeting, Activity-Based Budgeting.
Project Scheduling: Networks, Duration estimation, Critical path, Lagging, Crashing and
Activity Networks. Problems.
Financing: Various means of financing of project. Financing in private project, Financing in
Govt project
Implementation and Review: Implantation the project, Monitoring project performance,
Types of project termination.

Makeup exam: There will be no makeup exam.


Attendance calculation: No mark will be deducted for first 2 absences and half
mark will be deducted for every next absence.
Class test: Class test marks will be counted from the best one of two.
