SYNOPSIS FOR PROJECT ON

Introduction:

BE ENTC

The magic mirror is made up of a few things that are a mirror, a thin monitor, a Raspberry
Pi, some wood and paint. The mirror which will be use will be an observation mirror
(semitransparent) with a monitor attached to it on backside. We have figured the interface
wont allow any direct interaction with using the mirror. This would result in grease and
smudges on our shiny mirror, but more important: there are better devices for user
interaction. The Magic Mirror would be a passive source of information. It will display
current date, time, weather, etc.

Literature Survey:
We expect the mirror to display the required things by the interfacing of raspberry pi with
the monitor. The original Raspberry Pi is based on the Broadcom BCM2835 system on a
chip, which includes an ARM1176JZF-S 700 MHz processor, VideoCore IV GPU, and
was originally shipped with 256 megabytes of RAM, later upgraded (models B and B+)
to 512 MB. The biggest challenge will be making the system compact. The frame should
contain the mirror and monitor attached to it. The raspberry pi will be connected to the
monitor by a HDMI cable. The raspberry pi will need wifi connectivity, webserver to host
the interface and a browser running full screen to display the interface. We can use an
Apache interface to host the interface. We are thinking to use the Chromium browser in
kioskmode which is an open source and can run on raspberry OS. We need to fulfill our
commitments which consists of displaying a greeting, compliment, weather, clock,
calendar and news feed. There are a plenty of possibilities in the future which we will
look into according to time and space.

The mirror can be installed in very house. It will be comfortable for everyone if they can
check the current temperature, time and date as soon as we wake up. We can also make it
able to display events and schedules on the display thus reminding us of them. Reading
the news while dressing ourselves up will be another cool feature of the mirror. We can
also fully integrate it with location services and bing/google now. Thus, the mirror can
work as a tablet attached to a wall.

Proposed Work:
Apart from the hardware part, we have to connect the raspberry pi to the wifi. We need to
get our webserver up and running for which we have to learn about PHP scripts. The
display will simply be a full screen website and we can HTML, CSS and Javascript.
Again we will have to design the display with tested fonts and relevant colors. To display
the data on the mirror we will have to use APIs and RSS feeds.

Research Challenges:
Choosing the right mirror and the monitor will be the hardware challenges. We will
require indepth knowledge about raspberry pi. Hosting the website on the server will be
the biggest software challenge. We may face a lot of software issues with the languages
used.
