The legend of King Arthur and his knights has been popular for more than a thousand years. The knights
in England wanted a new king. They found a huge stone with a sword through it. There was golden
writing on the sword which said that the man who was able to pull it out of the stone would be the next
king. All the knights tried to pull the sword from the stone but no one could do it. Arthur was a young
boy at the time, but he managed to accomplish the feat and so became king. He lived in the castle of
Camelot with Queen Guinevere. In the castle there was a round table, made by Merlin, the magician. All
the knights sat around it. It was round because the king wanted to show that they were all on the same
level. The most famous knights were Sir Lancelot, Sir Gawain and Sir Galahad. However, there is always
a rotten apple. Arthur was killed by his nephew, Sir Mordred. Before he died, he gave his magic sword,
Excalibur, to his true friend, Sir Bedivere, and told him to throw it into a lake. When he did this, a
womans hand came out of the water and caught the sword. Three beautiful queens took Arthurs body in
a boat to the island of Avalon. The legend says that one day Arthur will return to save his country when
Britain needs him.
