Gung Ho is the Chinese phrase for working together. The Anglicized term gung ho became
widely known in English as a slogan that was adopted in WWII by the United States Marines
under General Evans Carlson. The term was incorporated in the American English to
describe an attitude of enthusiasm and dedication without limits against any activity.
The three driving principles of Gung Ho are:
1. "The Spirit of the Squirrel" teaches a lesson of the power of worthwhile work.
2. "The Way of the Beaver" showcases empowerment.
The first principle was revealed by watching squirrels running, again and again, to a feeder,
stuffing their cheeks with sunflower seeds, and taking them back to the forest. Why are the
squirrels working so hard? Because they are motivated. What motivates them? If they don't
store up food for the winter they will die. The squirrels are working hard because their work
is worthwhile.

The Spirit of the Squirrel can be instilled in people, by focusing on how their job fits into the

big picture, how it is important and adds value, and not simply on units produced.
Understanding that their work is worthwhile gives employees self-esteem, which is one of
the most powerful human emotions.

It is how the work helps others, not units dealt with.
2. Everyone works toward a shared goal.
The manager sets critical goals. The team can set the rest.
3. Values guide all plans, decisions and actions.
In a Gung Ho organization, values are the real boss.

More than a model Gung Ho is a philosophy, and it consists of three principles which are
modeled after observations of nature.
This shows us how important our environment is and that this is to find the solution to our
problems, just enough to look beyond our eyes and open your mind a little, because if we
do not, we would be locking in a narrow world.
If managers want to be successful, we must view and see the future and this is where we
make our employees are committed to the goal is not only important to you but also to a
group of people who are important to the organization.
