Unit 21: Human Resource Management Assignment


Scenario
Millennium IT is a leading innovative trading technology business. MillenniumITs systems are used
by exchange businesses around the world including, London Stock Exchange, Borsa Italiana, Oslo
Brs, Turquoise, ICAP, the London Metal Exchange, Johannesburg Stock Exchange and a series of
emerging market exchanges.
Founded in 1996 as a systems integrator and Sun Microsystems authorized reseller, Millennium
Information Technologies entered the software design field the following year when it interpreted a
systems integration contract from the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) as an opportunity to design and
install a straight-through processing system for the Exchange. The CSE solution became the basis for
MillenniumITs suite of capital-markets software products. The same year also saw the company build
the first suite of mobile-phone applications software for Dialog GSM, a leading Sri Lankan telecoms
provider. Meanwhile, MillenniumIT had also become the first company in Sri Lanka to share wealth
with its employees by way of a share-ownership plan.
Business wins in Mauritius, Croatia and Malaysia were the first steps towards a worldwide customer
base. Rapid growth demanded an injection of new funds, giving rise to another pioneer achievement as
MillenniumIT became the first Sri Lankan firm to successfully raise funds from international venture
capital. The systems integration business too, continued to grow and the company achieved dominance
in the Sri Lankan banking and telecoms sectors, and was appointed a Premium System Integration
partner by Cisco Systems around this time.
Today, MillenniumIT's capital markets suite is operational in more than 40 client sites around the
world, as the company continues to pursue its vision of being the worlds premier capital markets
software firm.
However, it has been identified recently that workforce turnover is increasing and staff motivation
levels in general are going down due to issues arising from communication gaps within the
organization, especially in various overseas branches. Further, senior management think that there is a
lack of human resources panning in the organization to be addressed.
To address above issues and to cater to ever growing numbers in workforce performing duties in
various countries, MillenniumIT recently started a recruiting drive locally. Assuming you were drafted
as a management trainee assisting senior manager Aspirations Management in human resource
management operations, address the following tasks.

Task 01:
First day at your work, your manager implied that Human Resources Management Person
you would not only have to perform Personnel Management functions assigned to previous
batch of management trainees.
1.1 As a Human resource management trainee at millennium IT, how you would contribute to
development of staff in various departments of the organization rather than just performing
personal management functions distinguishing personal management and human resources
management? (AC 1.1)
1.2 Millennium IT is striving to become a global leader in software developer for stock markets
management. As a Human Resource management trainee, how you would assess the function of the
human resource management in contributing to organisational purposes at millennium IT? (AC 1.2,)
1.3 In an organization such as Millennium IT, there would be multitude of line managerial functions
directly involved in its operations. Evaluate the role and responsibilities of line managers in human
resource management in an organization such as MillenniumIT? (AC 1.3)
1.4 Assume that you would be assigned to London Stock Exchange in United Kingdom as a part of the
human resources management team and analyse the impact of the legal and regulatory framework in
United Kingdom on human resource management in your work context. (AC 1.4)

You as a human resources management trainee, is expected to get new people as well as promote
suitable candidates to suitable positions.
2.1 You are going to convince you superior that it would be beneficial for an organization such as
MillenniumIT to have an effective human resources plan. Analyse the reasons for human resource
planning in an organization such as MillenniumIT (AC 2.1)
2.2 As a Human Resource Management trainee, outline the stages those would be involved in planning
human resource requirements for MillenniumITfor the next year. (AC 2.2)
2.3 It is stated that MillenniumIT is a software development company. The Aspirations manager, your
superior advises you to compare recruitment and selection techniques of TWO organizations of your
choice with the aim of gaining knowledge on such a process. You are requested to comment on the
similarities and differences you see in recruitment and selection processes of the organizations you
selected. (AC 2.3)
2.4 Taking the above organizations you selected in to consideration, evaluate the effectiveness of the
recruitment and selection techniques in two organisations. Make the argument with acceptable
reasoning. (AC 2.4)

Task 03
It has been stated that majority of the workers are not happy with their jobs and not performing
up to expected standards.
3.1. Senior management suggested that in order to motivate the underperforming staff and other
dissatisfied staff members at MilleniumIT, there should be some reward system. Assess the link
between motivational theory and reward systems in organizations such as MilleniumIT (AC 3.1)
3.2. Human resources department of an organization has to make sure that employees will be rewarded
according to the contributions they make.Evaluate the process of job evaluation and other factors
determining pay (AC 3.2)
3.3. There are different categories of workers performing multitude of tasks in different work contexts are
employed at MilleniumIT. Assess the effectiveness of reward systems in different work context in
organizations such as MilleniumIT. Please answer in detail. (AC3.3)
3.4. Monitoring performances of various employee categories is a must for any organization. Examine the
methods MillenniumIT can use to monitor employee performance (AC 3.4,)
